Tiny BMS datasheet

Tiny BMS 150A/750A

INTRODUCTION
BMS, or Battery Management System, is an
essential component of every Lithium battery.
Energus Tiny BMS supports lithium batteries of any
chemistry and up to 60V nominal. Battery capacity
from sub-1Ah to thousands of Ah can be managed
easily.

Tiny BMS measures individual voltages of parallel

cell groups and manages switching of load and
charger. During charging, cells are balanced by
bleeding-off higher cells to accomplish full balance
and maintain good health of battery pack.

State-of-Charge is calculated as well, and is

available via communication bus to be displayed for
FEATURES user.
 Integrated 150A power switch
 Supports 12V to 60V systems, all lithium
chemistries

QUICK START

Figure 1. A typical connection diagram

A typical connection diagram is shown in Figure 1. 5 to 16 series lithium cells are supported.

Connection sequence:
1. Prepare cell connection: connect the assembly(-ies) of balancing connector to cells first. Double and
triple-check voltages are in sequence on the connector(s). If there are less than 16 cells, lower
contacts should be unused as shown in Figure 1.
2. Connect main power lines of the battery to B– and B+. Make sure connections are strong and contain
no fuses or switches. BMS will boot up and beep several times.
3. Connect balancing connector(s) to BMS ports CELL01-CELL16.
4. Connect USB cable to Windows PC and BMS, launch Energus Battery Insider configuration utility
and set appropriate parameters: voltage, temperature and current levels, number of cells in series.
After that is done, BMS will be in Idle state.

Note: Connection sequence is important. Tiny BMS is supplied from BAT– and BAT+ and incorrect
connection can lead to permanent damage of the board. Main rule is to avoid balancing wire connection
without BAT– and BAT+ being connected. When disconnecting from battery, disconnect balancing wires first,
only then followed by BAT+ and BAT–.

External current sensor and contactors

For higher current capability, external current sensor and contactors can be used.

Currently supported current sensor is LEM DHAB S-133, which is a dual-range

sensor, with measurement range up to ±750A. Lower range measures up to ±75A
and is used for higher accuracy measurement at low current. Switching of ranges
is done automatically by Tiny BMS.

For switching of high current, external contactor/relay or other compatible circuitry

should be used. The relays can be connected to any of these programmable
Extension IOs: AIHO1, AIHO2, AIDO1, AIDO2, DIDO1, DIDO2. All of these are multi-purpose and can be
used either as inputs or outputs. The output of AIDO1, AIDO2, DIDO1, DIDO2 is open-drain and, when active,
connect to BAT–. When relay’s rated voltage is compatible with voltage of the battery, other end of relay can
be connected directly to BAT+. If not, required voltage should be provided separately.

Actual connection depends on software configuration: relays and other signals can be connected to any of
Extension IOs by selecting corresponding pin from dropdown menu under Peripherals tab.

Note:

For best results of high current handling with integrated

switches, mount the BMS on cool metal surface, such as
enclosure of battery box.
