Math Lesson Addition
Math Lesson Addition
Grade: Kindergarten
Content Area: Math
Content and Standards: K.AO.A.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and
subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem. K.AO.A.5
Fluently add and subtract within 5.
Prerequisites: Students know what addition is and the terminology that accompanies it (e.g.
plus, add, equal to). Students know how to assemble a number sentence.
Essential Questions: How can you solve addition word problems? How can you write addition
number sentences?
Instructional Objective: Students will know how to solve addition problems and be able to
write addition sentences.
Instructional Procedures:
Before:
Warmup/Introduction: I will have students tell me what they know about using
pictures to add.
I will draw a small group of objects next to another small group of objects on the
board (or will have objects on hand/drawn already).
o “How many are in the first group? How many are in the second group?”
o “How can we find out how many these are altogether?”
Should say something like add them, join them, count them etc.
I will move/erase second group and move/draw them next to the first group. I will
explain that they are now joined or added together.
During:
Students will listen to a word problem. I will have pictures on the Smart Board.
o Example: There are two fish. Some more fish swim over. Now there are
three fish. How many fish swam over?
o “What information do you know?”
o “What information do you have to find out?”
o “How many fish did we start with? How many fish are being added? How
many fish are there now?
I will then reread the original problem and have the students put it in an addition
sentence.
o “Since we know how many fish we have, we now are going to put it in a
number sentence.” They will tell me 2 plus 1 equals 3.
We will do another problem. This time students will write the addition sentence.
After the sentence is written, I will call a student up to circle the picture of what
we started with.
We will do 2 or 3 together (all depending on comprehension).
After:
They will get out their counting chips and use those to visualize the word
problem.
They will take turns coming to the board and tapping the dice.
o Whatever number the dice land on we will use in our number sentence.
I will create a word problem and they will write the number sentence.
o Then I will ask them to circle the number that is being added.
o We will do as many as we have time for.
Assessment: This lesson allows me to assess whether or not they are comprehending what
they’ve learned about addition thus far and specifically how to write addition number sentences.
I’m looking to see whether or not they can properly write their addition sentences and are putting
the + and = signs in the right places.
Differentiated Instruction: For some students, this may be easier than for others. If it it’s too
simple, I can either give them more difficult problems or not guide them as much. For the
students who need more assistance, I will continue guiding them until they are confidently
comprehending and writing addition sentences correctly. I will also continue giving them simpler
problems maybe with a number filled and even the + sign in if they are really having a hard time.
