Statistics Project

1) The document discusses lessons on statistics and probability, including understanding the normal curve distribution, z-scores, areas under the normal curve, and determining probabilities. 2) It provides an example of analyzing national achievement test results from Philippine schools to determine the average performance of Grade 6 students in mathematics. 3) Key findings include that the average score was 30.84 and most sample schools had average performance, though some ranked higher or lower than others based on their mean scores and standard deviations.

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

Lesson 1: Understanding the Normal Curve Distribution

Look Back and Reflect

In the previous lessons, you have learned about random variables, their means and
standard deviations, and their probability distributions.
Think about your answer to the following question. Ten discuss your ideas with other
students.
Why would a large sample set of data be favorable for making decisions?
A larger sample provides more relevant information, and as a result a more
accurate estimation and better statistical judgement regarding test of hypotheses.
Although it gives more reliable results with greater precision and power, they also
cost more time and money.

Extension
1. Use the internet and read the TIMSS report on the average performance of all learners
in Grade 6 in Mathematics and in Science.
2. Show the report using a graphical representation for each subject.
3. Locate the Philippine score in the graph.
4. With reference to the population mean, interpret the performance of Filipino learners
based on the report.
5. Based on the information that you gathered, what favorable action can you suggest?

Lesson 2: Understanding the Z-scores

Look Back and Reflect
In the past lessons, you have learned about random variables, their means and
standard deviations, and their probability distributions. In this lesson, you learned about z-
scores.
Think about your answers to the following question. Then discuss your ideas with
your classmates.

There are three grades in a report card that you want to interpret in terms of
performance: Mathematics (75), English (85), and Science (90). The means are 72, 83, and
88, respectively. The standard deviations are 3, 10, and 15 respectively. Is the information
sufficient for you to compare the grades? If so, discuss your process. If not, explain why is it
impossible.

Solution:

STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY

x−x 75−72
z=  Mathematics: z=  z=1.00
s 3
85−83
 English: z=  z=0.20
10
90−88
 Science: z=  z=0.13
15

Mathematics: z=1.00  0.3413; 0.3413 + 0.5000 = 0.8413 or 84.13%

English: z=0.20  0.0793; 0.0793 + 0.5000 = 0.5793 or 57.93%
Science: z=0.13  0.0517; 0.0517 + 0.5000 = 0.5517 or 55.17%

Extension
1. Find out the average performance of all Grade 6 Filipino learners in Mathematics in a
national achievement test.

2. Look for three sample local schools and describe their performance in the same
national achievement test. Be sure to get the mean and standard deviation for each
school performance.
2011-2012 NAT – Grade 6 Results (Mathematics)
1) Don M. Vasquez ES, mean = 28.67; SD = 5.95; N = 61; Rank 12
2) Paz Vda. De Escamilla ES, mean = 32.88; SD = 3.39; N = 40; Rank 9
3) San Rafael ES, mean = 35.48; SD = 4.85; N = 40; Rank 6

3. What can you conclude about the performance of your sample schools with respect to
the average performance?
Most of the sample schools that I have chosen has the average performance in terms
of the Mathematics subject in the National Achievement Test. Although they have almost
the same values of the mean and the standard deviation, they are different in the overall
ranking. In this district, Hinoba-an in Negros Occidental, having the sixth rank, San
Rafael ES has the highest mean the subject of Mathematics.

Lesson 3: Identifying Regions of Areas Under the Normal Curve

Look Back and Reflect
In the past lesson, you determined the average performance of all Grade 6 Filipino
learners in Mathematics in national achievement test.
Show the information using the sketch of a normal curve.

Extension
Assuming that mathematics literacy is your advocacy and that you are volunteer in
your barangay, how would you disseminate the information to parents in general or to your
community in particular?
If ever I had a chance to be a volunteer in our barangay, I would organize a simple
symposium for the community so that I could equally elucidate the information that they need
to know. I would also present the data in an understandable and informative way.

Lesson 4: Determining Probabilities

Look Back and Reflect
You have learned of the importance of the areas of the regions under the normal
curve. You have also learned how to compute these values.
Think about your answer to the following questions. Then, discuss your ideas with
other students.

 What probability expression is equivalent to P (| z | > 1.96)?

Suppose Z is a standard normal random variable.
P (Z > 1.96) = 1 − P(Z ≤ 1.96)
= 1 − Φ (1.96)
= 1 − 0.9750
= 0.0250
