Falling asleep with the TV on or a dim night-light in your room may seem soothing. But these
seemingly innocent light sources could also form barriers between you and healthy sleep.
A study suggests that exposure to light stimulates a nerve pathway from the eye to parts of the
brain that control hormones, body temperature and other functions that play a role in making us feel
Bahasa Inggris/UM/UMUM/1920 8
sleepy or wide-awake. Therefore, too much light right before bedtime may prevent you from getting a
good night’s sleep. In fact, one study recently found that exposure to unnatural light cycles may have
real consequences for our health including increased risk for depression.
Not only depression, a breast cancer care organization says that light may contribute to breast
cancer. It is resulted from the melatonin, a hormone that is believed to help reduce the development of
cancer, which is really related with light. Melatonin production normally peaks at night and is lower
during the day when your eyes register light exposure. When people work at night or if they’re
exposed to external light at night, their melatonin levels tend to stay low.
Those are now some good reasons for those having dark phobia to turn off the lights before
sleeping. If overcoming your fear of the dark isn’t reason enough to turn out the lights, consider the
impact of sleep disorders and poor sleep on your health.

24. What is the function of melatonin?

A. It helps produce the good hormone for health.
B. It may help people who are afraid of the dark.
C. It adds up your energy to work overnight.
D. It can check cancer cell n human’s body.

B. Good sleep cycle can prevent people from the risk of cancer.
C. People working at night has more risks of breast cancer.
D. Melatonin peaks in the body of depressed people.
E. Light can help people dealt with their phobia.

26. “If overcoming your fear of the dark isn’t reason enough …” (Paragraph 4)
The word ‘overcoming” has equal meaning to ….
A. over thinking
B. coping with
C. coming over
D. coming late
E. over acting

Sponges or Porifera are a group of animals that includes about 10,000 living species. Adult
sponges are sessile animals that attach to hard rocky surfaces, shells or submerged objects. The larvae
are ciliated, free-swimming creatures. Most sponges inhabit marine environment, but a few species
live in freshwater habitats. There are three subgroups of sponges, the glass sponges, the demosponges,
and the calcarious sponges.

Sponges are primitive multicellular animals that have no digestive system, no circulatory
system and no nervous system. They do not have organs and their cells are not organized into well-
defined tissues. The body of a sponge is like a sac that is perforated with lots of small openings or
pores.
Sponges are filter feeders. They draw water in through the pores located throughout their body
wall into a central cavity. The central cavity is lined with collar cells which have a ring of tentacles
that surround a flagellum. Movement of the flagellum creates current that keeps water flowing through
the central cavity and out of a hole at the top of the sponge called the osculum. As water passes over

Bahasa Inggris/UM/UMUM/1920 9
the collar cells, food is captured by the collar cell’s ring of tentacles. Once absorbed, food is digested

The following text is for questions 30 to 32.

Once a memory is created, it must be stored (no matter how briefly). Many experts think
there are three ways we store memories: first in the sensory stage; then in short-term memory;
and ultimately, for some memories, in long-term memory. Because there is no need for us to
maintain everything in our brain, the different stages of human memory function as a sort of
filter that helps to protect us from the flood of information that we’re confronted with on a
daily basis.
The creation of a memory begins with its perception. The registration of information
during perception occurs in the brief sensory stage that usually lasts only a fraction of a
second. It’s your sensory memory that allows a perception such as a visual pattern, a sound, or
a touch to linger for brief moment after the stimulation is over.
After the first flicker, the sensation is stored in short-term memory. Short-term memory
has a fairly limited capacity; it can hold about seven items for no more than 20 or 30 seconds
at a time.

Important information is gradually transferred from short-term memory into long-term

memory. The more the information is repeated or used, the more likely it is eventually end up
in long-term memory, or to be “retained.” Unlike sensory and short-term memory, which are
limited and decay rapidly, long-term memory can store unlimited amounts of information
indefinitely.
People tend to more easily store material on subjects that they already know something
about, since the information has more meaning to them and can be mentally connected to
related information that is already stored in their long-term memory. That’s why someone who
Bahasa Inggris/UM/UMUM/1920 10
has an average memory may be able to remember a greater depth of information about one
particular subject.

30. What does the text highlight?

C. not all information in short-term memory is stored in long-term memory
D. the process of transfer from short-term memory to long term memory is very fast
E. the process of transfer from short-term memory to long term memory is no more 20 seconds

32. We can understand from the text that ....

A. information just stays for a while in our memory
B. short-term memory is the most important memory
C. the work of our memory depends on the capacity of it
D.the process of storing information is done in three stages
E. we can store all information we get in our long-term memory
