Laboratory Activity 1: Power up and Shutdown

1. A.) Discuss the seven functions that you will be allowed to perform using the hand-held teach
pendant.

The seven function of a hand-held teach pendant are start-up, program, run, monitor, manual,
shutdown, and adjustments.

Start-up - allows you to operate the robot motor drives


Program - allows you to enter, edit, and access the programs
Run - allows the user to process or run the program
Monitor – allows you to monitor the operations of the robot through the status line
Manual – allows you to operate the robot manually also known as jogging
Shutdown – allows you stop a program and disable the robot drives
Adjustments – allows you to make changes in control settings of the robot

B.) Discuss the three components of the hand-held teach pendant.

The three component of the teach pendant are as follows:

Display Screen - a two-line liquid crystal display (LCD) ; the upper line shows the status line where
you can see the information about the current operation of the robot and the lower line shows
the menu line where it displays the functions activated by pressing one of the function keys (F1-
F4) located below the display on the keypad

Emergency Stop Pushbutton - causes the robot to stop its program and disable its drives
immediately after pressing it

Keypad - allows the user to enter and display information about the robot’s operation ; the hard
keys have specific function while the soft keys or function keys have different functions
depending on what is assigned to it

C.) Identify the specific functions of the keys that can be found on the hand-held teach pendant
keypad.

• Status Line
• Menu Line
• Emergency Stop Pushbutton
• Function Keys
• Exec Key
• Scroll Key
• Jog Key
D.) The group of function listed on the lower line of the teach pendant display is called the menu
line. With the aid of the teach pendant, discuss the procedures on how you are going to
select which menu to use for a specific function.

The teach pendant has 7 main menus. For the first 4, press F1 for Start, F2 for Program, F3 for
Teach, F4 for Run. To see the other 3, press the scroll key. The new assigned functions for F1 F2
F3 are Par, Test and Jog respectively. To go back to the previous set of menu, press the minus. To
access the sub menus, press the specific function key and to go back, just press exec key until the
screen displays the main menu again.

2. The Robot Safety Checklist was already given to you by your facilitator; conduct the Robot Safety
Check procedure.

• Remove all obstructions from the robot work area.

• Check for signs of damage to the robot.

• Remove loose fitting clothing, ties, scarves, sleeves, etc.

• Tie up long hair.

• Remove the teach pendant from the robot work area.

• Locate the emergency stop button.

• People in the area must wear safety glasses.

• People must be outside the robot’s work area.

3. A. Discuss the proper procedure on how to power on the controller up to enabling the servo
robot drives.
1. Perform a safety check on the Pegasus Robot and the work area
2. Press and release the power pushbutton on the controller to turn on the robot controller.

After pressing the power pushbutton, the power on indicator light should turn on and it will show a
message displayed on the teach pendant. After 10 seconds, the teach pendant will then display the
version number of robot’s software as follows:

Then the Main Menu will be displayed on the screen

3. Enable the Motor Drives


Press the [F1] STA key on the teach pendant to display the following Start-up menu. This is the
final step to power up the robot. The status line will show that you are now in the start-up menu
(START) and the motors are disabled. Press the [F2] ENA key to enable and send power to the
motors.
B. Discuss the proper procedure on how to shut down the servo robot.

1. Disable the robot drives.


a. Press [Fl] STA for you to go to the Start-up menu.
b. Press [F3] DIS to disable the robot arm. This will remove power from the robot’s motors and
the teach pendant should display:

2. Press the Power pushbutton on the controller to turn off the controller. Make sure that the
Power and Turbo status indicators turn off and the teach pendant display goes blank.

3. Conduct a safety check on the Pegasus Robot work area
