Grade 12: Ict - Computer Systems Servicing

The document provides information about installing and configuring computer systems. It discusses peripheral devices, which are external devices that connect to computers but are not essential for computing. There are three types: input devices like keyboards and mice that send data to computers; output devices like monitors and printers that provide output; and storage devices like hard drives that store processed data. Common input devices are then described in more detail, including their purposes and basic functions.

accordance with established procedures and check against system
requirements.

INFORMATION SHEET 3.1

A peripheral device is an internal or external device that connects directly to a computer

but does not contribute to the computer's primary function, such as computing. It helps
end users access and use the functionalities of a computer.

A peripheral device provides input/output (I/O) functions for a computer and serves as an
auxiliary computer device without computing-intensive functionality. Peripheral devices
connect with a computer through several I/O interfaces, such as communications (COM),
Universal Serial Bus (USB) and serial ports.
There are three different types of peripherals:

o Input, used to interact with, or send data to the computer (mouse,

keyboards, etc.)
o Output, which provides output to the user from the computer (monitors,
printers, etc.)
o Storage (process), which stores data processed by the computer (hard
drives, flash drives, etc.)

Inputs are the signals or data received by the system, and outputs are the signals
or data sent from it.

There are many input and output devices such as multifunction printers and computer-
based navigation systems that are used for specialized or unique applications.

In computing, input/output refers to the communication between an information

processing system (such as a computer), and the outside world. Inputs are the signals or
data received by the system, and outputs are the signals or data sent from it.

Common Peripherals Devices

Given below is the list of the most common input devices along with brief information
about each of them.

1. Keyboard

 A simple device comprising keys and each key denotes either an alphabet,
number or number commands which can be given to a computer for various
actions to be performed.
 It has a modified version of typewriter keys
 The keyboard is an essential input device and computer and laptops both use
keyboards to give commands to the computer

2. Mouse

 It is also known as a pointing device

 Using mouse we can directly click on the various icons present on the system
and open up various files and programs
 A mouse comprises 3 buttons on the top and one trackball at the bottom
which helps in selecting and moving the mouse around, respectively
 In case of laptops, the touchpad is given as a replacement of mouse which
helps in the movement of the mouse pointer

3. Joy Stick

 It is a device which comprises a stick which is attached at an angle to the

base, so that it can be moved and controlled
 Mostly used to control the movement in video games
 Apart from computer system, a joystick is also used in the cockpit of an aero
plane, wheel chairs, cranes, trucks, etc. to operate them well

4. Light Pen

 It is wand-like looking device which can directly be moved over the device’s
screen
 It is light sensitive
 Used in conjunction with computer’s cathode ray tube

5. Microphone

 Using a microphone, sound can be stored in a device in its digital form

 It converts sound into electrical signal
 To record or reproduce a sound created using a microphone, it needs to be
connected with an amplifier

6. Scanner

 This device can scan images or text and convert it into a digital signal
 When we place any piece of document on a scanner, it converts it into a digital
signal and displays it on the computer screen

7. Barcode Reader

 It is a kind of an optical scanner.

 It can read bar codes.
 A source of light is passed through a bar code, and its aspects and details are
displayed on the screen
8. Digitizer Tablet

 A graphics drawing tablet used for sketching new images or tracing old ones.
Also called a "graphics tablet," the user contacts the surface of the device
with a wired or wireless pen or puck. Often mistakenly called a mouse, the
puck is officially the "tablet cursor."

All the devices mentioned above are the most commonly used input devices.
Several other such equipment’s are used in different fields which can be counted as
an input device.

The commonly used output devices have been listed below with a brief summary of
what their function is and how they can be used.

1. Monitor

 The device which displays all the icons, text, images, etc. over a screen is
called the Monitor. When we ask the computer to perform an action, the result
of that action is displayed on the monitor. Various types of monitors have also
been developed over the years.

2. Printer

 A device which makes a copy of the pictorial or textual content, usually over a
paper is called a printer. For example, an author types the entire book on
his/her computer and later gets a print out of it which is in the form of paper and
is later published
 Multiple types of printers are also available in the market, which can serve
different purposes

3. Speakers

 A device through which we can listen to a sound as an outcome of what we

command a computer to do is called a speaker.
 Speakers are attached with a computer system and also are a hardware device
which can be attached separately.
 With the advancement in technology, speakers are now available which are
wireless and can be connected using Bluetooth or other applications

4. Projector

 An optical device which presents an image or moving images onto a

projection screen is called a projector
 Most commonly these projectors are used in auditoriums and movie theatres
for display of the videos or lightening
 If a projector is connected to a computer, then the image/video displayed on
the screen is the same as the one displayed on the computer screen

5. Headphones

 They perform the same function as a speaker, the only difference is the
frequency of sound.
 Using speakers, the sound can be heard over a larger area and using
headphones, the sound is only audible to the person using them
 Also known as earphones or headset

Storage devices

Floppy disk drive

A floppy disk or floppy diskette is a type of disk storage composed of a thin and flexible
disk of a magnetic storage medium in a square or nearly square plastic enclosure lined
with a fabric that removes dust particles from the spinning disk. Floppy disks are read
from and written to by a floppy disk drive (FDD).

Flash drive

Alternatively referred to as a USB flash drive, data stick, pen drive, memory
unit, keychain drive, and thumb drive, a jump drive is a portable storage device. It is
often the size of a human thumb (hence the name), and connects to a computer via
a USB port. Flash drives are an easy way to store and transfer information between
computers and range in sizes from 2 GB to 1 TB.

Disk drive

A disk drive is a physical drive in a computer capable of holding and retrieving

information. Below is a list of all the different types of computer disk drives.

CD

Abbreviated as CD, a compact disc is a flat, round, optical storage medium invented
by James Russell. The first CD was created at a Philips factory in Germany on August
17, 1982. The picture is an example of the bottom of a standard compact disc and is the
side the disc player reads. The opposite side of the disc has a label to help indicate what
is on the disc.
DVD

Short for digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a DVD or DVD-ROM is
a disc capable of storing a significant amount more data than a standard compact disc.
DVDs are widely used for storing and viewing movies and other data. The picture of
the Matrix DVD movie disc is an example of a DVD movie. DVD-ROM drives that utilize
these discs were first sold in 1997.

LS-120

A drive which supports a special floppy diskette which can store up to 120MB of
information as well as being backwards compatible and still supporting the standard
1.44MB floppy diskettes.

Zip drive

A small, portable disk drive used primarily for backing up and archiving personal computer
files.

Input/output

Modem

A modem or broadband modem is a hardware device that connects

a computer or router to a broadband network. For example, a cable modem and DSL
modem are two examples of these types of Modems.

Short for modulator/demodulator, a modem is a hardware device that allows a

computer to send and receive information over telephone lines. When sending a signal,
the device converts ("modulates") digital data to an analog audio signal, and transmits it
over a telephone line. Similarly, when an analog signal is received, the modem converts
it back ("demodulates" it) to a digital signal.

Network interface controller (NIC)

Short for network interface card, the NIC is also referred to as an Ethernet
card and network adapter. A NIC is a computer expansion card for connecting to
a network (e.g., home network or Internet) using an Ethernet cable with an RJ-
45 connector.
