INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING COMPUTER SYSTEMS (ICCS)
What I Need To Know?
Before you start with this module, pleases set aside other tasks that will distract and hinder you in
enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to fully enjoy the objectives of this kit.
Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every page of
this module.
2. Write in your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Writing enhances
learning, which is important to develop in retaining the lesson in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Analyze conceptually the posttest and apply what you have learned.
5. Enjoy studying!

LESSON
PERIPHERAL DEVICES
3
Learning Objectives:
After reading of this Information Sheet, you should be able to:
1. Identify materials or peripheral devices necessary to complete the work in
accordance with established procedures and check against system requirements
2. Familiarize with computer peripheral devices in accordance with the established
procedure on correct operation and safety policies.
3. Obtain materials or peripheral devices necessary to complete the work in
accordance with established procedures and check against system
requirements.
A peripheral device provides input/output (I/O) functions for a computer and serves as an
auxiliary computer device without computing-intensive functionality. Peripheral devices
connect with a computer through several I/O interfaces, such as communications (COM),
Universal Serial Bus (USB) and serial ports.
There are three different types of peripherals:
Inputs are the signals or data received by the system, and outputs are the signals
or data sent from it.
There are many input and output devices such as multifunction printers and computer-
based navigation systems that are used for specialized or unique applications.
1. Keyboard
A simple device comprising keys and each key denotes either an alphabet,
number or number commands which can be given to a computer for various
actions to be performed.
It has a modified version of typewriter keys
The keyboard is an essential input device and computer and laptops both use
keyboards to give commands to the computer
2. Mouse
3. Joy Stick
4. Light Pen
It is wand-like looking device which can directly be moved over the device’s
screen
It is light sensitive
Used in conjunction with computer’s cathode ray tube
5. Microphone
6. Scanner
This device can scan images or text and convert it into a digital signal
When we place any piece of document on a scanner, it converts it into a digital
signal and displays it on the computer screen
7. Barcode Reader
A graphics drawing tablet used for sketching new images or tracing old ones.
Also called a "graphics tablet," the user contacts the surface of the device
with a wired or wireless pen or puck. Often mistakenly called a mouse, the
puck is officially the "tablet cursor."
All the devices mentioned above are the most commonly used input devices.
Several other such equipment’s are used in different fields which can be counted as
an input device.
The commonly used output devices have been listed below with a brief summary of
what their function is and how they can be used.
1. Monitor
The device which displays all the icons, text, images, etc. over a screen is
called the Monitor. When we ask the computer to perform an action, the result
of that action is displayed on the monitor. Various types of monitors have also
been developed over the years.
2. Printer
A device which makes a copy of the pictorial or textual content, usually over a
paper is called a printer. For example, an author types the entire book on
his/her computer and later gets a print out of it which is in the form of paper and
is later published
Multiple types of printers are also available in the market, which can serve
different purposes
3. Speakers
4. Projector
5. Headphones
They perform the same function as a speaker, the only difference is the
frequency of sound.
Using speakers, the sound can be heard over a larger area and using
headphones, the sound is only audible to the person using them
Also known as earphones or headset
Storage devices
A floppy disk or floppy diskette is a type of disk storage composed of a thin and flexible
disk of a magnetic storage medium in a square or nearly square plastic enclosure lined
with a fabric that removes dust particles from the spinning disk. Floppy disks are read
from and written to by a floppy disk drive (FDD).
Flash drive
Alternatively referred to as a USB flash drive, data stick, pen drive, memory
unit, keychain drive, and thumb drive, a jump drive is a portable storage device. It is
often the size of a human thumb (hence the name), and connects to a computer via
a USB port. Flash drives are an easy way to store and transfer information between
computers and range in sizes from 2 GB to 1 TB.
Disk drive
CD
Abbreviated as CD, a compact disc is a flat, round, optical storage medium invented
by James Russell. The first CD was created at a Philips factory in Germany on August
17, 1982. The picture is an example of the bottom of a standard compact disc and is the
side the disc player reads. The opposite side of the disc has a label to help indicate what
is on the disc.
DVD
Short for digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a DVD or DVD-ROM is
a disc capable of storing a significant amount more data than a standard compact disc.
DVDs are widely used for storing and viewing movies and other data. The picture of
the Matrix DVD movie disc is an example of a DVD movie. DVD-ROM drives that utilize
these discs were first sold in 1997.
LS-120
A drive which supports a special floppy diskette which can store up to 120MB of
information as well as being backwards compatible and still supporting the standard
1.44MB floppy diskettes.
Zip drive
A small, portable disk drive used primarily for backing up and archiving personal computer
files.
Input/output
Modem
Short for network interface card, the NIC is also referred to as an Ethernet
card and network adapter. A NIC is a computer expansion card for connecting to
a network (e.g., home network or Internet) using an Ethernet cable with an RJ-
45 connector.
