7. CONNECTION DIAGRAMS AREA

Selection of the CONTROL UNIT AREA key in the list of diagnosis options
permits entry to the analysis session, organized in three sections:
1. electrical functions – measurement environment in which
the connection diagrams of the systems controlled by an
electronic control unit are displayed. Information regarding
the components of the connection diagram is available. To
use the Multimeter environment from the MODUS Station,
to make electrical measurements, this must be connected
via network with the IWT
2. electronic systems – diagnosis activities
3. auxiliary functions – 2nd level programming activities (modifi-
cation of configurations) and forms.

7.1 ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS

Once the BASIC CONNECTION DIAGRAMS key or the SERVICES CON-

NECTION DIAGRAM, key has been selected, the MODUS system posi-
tions on the Select Electrical Functions screen page.
Refer to part I - chapter 3 of the If the MODUS station has been connected to an IWT, or if an IWT
manual for the MODUS-IWT con- is used in independent mode, this screen page permits access to an
nection. information and measurement environment for the electrical com-
ponents of the vehicle under test.
WARNING correct diagnosis of an electronic system must include an analysis of
the connection diagram where the control unit is connected in
order to avoid incorrect operations on the electronic system.

The Select Electrical Functions screen page

This screen page lists the electrical functions available for the vehicle
under test which are displayed in the form of ideograms (ref. fig. 7.1).
When you select the IDEOGRAM required, the system accesses the
Connection Diagram environment and positions automatically on the
MULTIMETER sheet.
In the Connection Diagram environment, for each electrical function con-
cerned, system resources can be accessed selecting each of the following
sheets (ref. fig. 7.3):

1. ECU (ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT) sheet
2. MULTIMETER sheet

3. COMPONENTS sheet
Each sheet displays the connection diagram of the function selected.
The CONNECTION DIAGRAM is a selectable active area: if necessary
t
you can scroll the diagram selecting it with one finger and dragging
your finger n the monitor. A yellow hand is displayed on the connec-
tion diagram when the drag function of the diagram is active.

Electrical function analysis and measurement procedure
To star t an analysis of the electrical function required, it is advi-
af
sable to carr y out the following procedure:
– position on the Diagnosis Options Selection screen page
t
(ref. fig. 3.1)
– select the BASIC CONNECTION DIAGRAMS AREA or SERVICES
CONNECTION DIAGRAMS AREA key
– select the ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS sheet, if this is not
displayed automatically (ref. fig. 7.1)
– select the IDEOGRAM corresponding to the electronic func-
tion required in the SELECT ELECTRICAL FUNCTION active area
the system positions on the MULTIMETER sheet of the Electrical Fun-
ctions environment (ref. fig. 7.4) and displays the connection dia-
gram of the function selected

– select the COMPONENTS sheet to identify a component in

the connection diagram and, if necessary, display its cha-
racteristics and position (ref. fig. 7.3)

130
SECOND PART 7 - CONNECTION DIADRAMS AREA

– select the MULTIMETER sheet and select the component on

which the measurement is to be made in the COMPONENT
LIST active area

selection is also possible from the COMPONENTS sheet, COM-

PONENT LIST active area (ref. fig. 5.3)

– select the MEASUREMENT LINE L1 active area if this is not

selected (ref. fig. 7.4)
– in the MEASUREMENT POINTS LIST active area, select the mea-
surement required to combine with line L1
– repeat the procedure to associate line L2 to the measure-
ment point required
– select the MULTIMETER key to start the measurement
the system displays the correct connection method and proposes
a multimeter area from which the type of measurement can be
selected and the measurement made

Error conditions
If the software connection exists between the MODUS station and
IWT but the physical connection has not been made, only consulta-
tion of the connection diagrams is possible.
It is not possible therefore to make the measurement if the
dr
MODUS station is not connected to the IWT.

Displays the list of codes of the components in the connection dia-

gram of the function selected and related information in the Compo-
nents screen page.
The list is a selectable active area.
You can request information about each component of the list:
– select the component concerned
– select the COMPONENTS POSITION key
The figure of the component and its position on the vehicle are
displayed in a new screen page: select the TICK key to return to the
Components screen page.
Additional information about the component can be obtained
displaying its characteristics and internal diagram:
– select the COMPONENT INFO key
– select the DIAGRAM key (which has replaced the COMPO-
NENT INFO key) to return to display of the connection dia-
gram
