Selecting the CONTROL UNIT AREA key in the list of diagnostic

options permits access to the analysis session, organized in three
sections:
1. electrical functions – measurement environment in which
the connection diagrams of the systems controlled by an
electronic control unit are displayed. Information on the
components in the connection diagram is available. To use
the Multimeter environment of the MODUS Station to make
electrical measurements, connection via network with the
IWT is necessary

5.1 ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS

Once the ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT AREA key has been selected,
the MODUS system positions automatically on the Electrical Func-
tion Selection screen page.
Refer to part I - chapter 3 of the If the MODUS station is connected to an IWT, or if an IWT is used
manual for MODUS-IWT connec- in independent mode, this screen page provides access to an infor-
tion. mation and measurement environment for the electric components
of the control unit under test.
WARNING Correct diagnosis of an electronic system must also include analysis
of the connection diagram where the control unit is connected in
order to avoid intrusion in the electronic system.

The Electrical Functions Selection screen page

This page lists the electrical functions available for the electronic sys-
tem concerned, displayed in the form of ideograms (ref. fig. 5.1).
When the IDEOGRAM required is selected, system accesses the Con-
nection Diagram environment and positions automatically on the
ECU sheet.
In the Connection Diagram environment, for each electrical function con-
cerned, the resources of the system are available selecting one of the fol-
lowing sheets (ref. fig. 5.3):

The connection diagram of the function selected is displayed in each
sheet. The CONNECTION DIAGRAM is a selectable active area: if
t
necessary the connection diagram can be scrolled selecting this with
the finger and driving the finger on the monitor. A yellow hand is
displayed on the connection diagram when the drug function of the
diagram is active.

Electrical function measurement and analysis procedure
To star t an analysis of the electrical function belonging to the
electronic system under test, it is advisable to carry out the fol-
af
lowing procedure:
– position on the Diagnosis Option Selection screen page
t
(ref. fig. 3.1)
– select the ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT AREA key
– select the ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS sheet, if this is not dis-
played automatically (ref. fig. 4.1)
– select the IDEOGRAM corresponding to the electronic func-
tion required in the SYSTEM SELECTION active area
the system positions on the ECU sheet of the Electrical Functions
environment (ref. fig. 5.5) and displays the connection diagram of
the function selected.

– select the COMPONENTS sheet to identify a component in

the connection diagram and, if necessary, display its charac-
teristics and position (ref. fig. 5.3)

112
SECOND PART 5 - CONTROL UNITS AREA - ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS

– select the MULTIMETER sheet (ref. fig. 5.4) and select the
component on which the measurement is to be made in the
COMPONENT LIST active area

Selection is also possible from the COMPONENTS sheet, COMPO-

NENTS LIST active area (ref. fig. 5.3)

– select the TYPE OF CONNECTION key

– select the MEASUREMENT LINE L1 active area
– in the MEASUREMENT POINTS LIST active area, select the mea-
surement point required to combine this with line L1
– repeat the procedure to associate line L2 to the measure-
ment point required
– select the MULTIMETER key to start the measurement
the system displays the correct connection method and proposes
a multimeter area from which the type of measurement can be
selected and the measurement made

Error conditions
If the software connection exists between the MODUS station and
IWT, but the physical connection has not been made, only consulta-
tion of the connection diagrams is possible.
dr
It is not possible therefore to make the measurement if the
MODUS station is not connected to the IWT.

gram of the function selected and related information in the Compo-
nents screen page.
The list is a selectable active area.
Information can be requested on each component of the list:
– select the component concerned
– select the COMPONENTS POSITION key
The figure of the component and its position on the vehicle are
displayed in a new screen page: select the TICK key to return to the
Components screen page.
Additional information about the component can be obtained
