Imitation

A dark unfathom’d tide

Of interminable pride—
A mystery, and a dream,
Should my early life seem;
I say that dream was fraught
With a wild, and walking thought
Of beings that have been,
Which my spirit hath not seen,
Had I let them pass me by,
With a dreaming eye!
Let none of earth inherit
That vision of my spirit;
Those thoughts I would control,
As a spell upon his soul:
For that bright hope at last
And that light time have past,
And my worldly rest hath gone
With a sigh as it pass’d on:
I care not tho’ it perish
With a thought I then did cherish

Analysis:
This poem is composed by one stanza and 20 lines, and it has 10 couplets (pairs of rhyming lines)
"Imitation" is the title of the poem, which is defined as the action of using someone or something as a
model or a thing intended to simulate or copy something else. Perhaps the poem demonstrates how people
in our society are able to easily imitate the ideas and actions of others and give it their own name. It is
very likely that Poe wrote "Imitation" as he was reflecting on his own life. The speaker in the poem
regrets his past mistakes which causes him to speak in a bitter tone. The poet indicates that although the
speaker was unable to fulfill his dreams, he decided to forget about the past and cherish his future. The
central theme is the speaker's bitterness and disappointment, at failing in his youthful dreams.
The background of the author may support this interpretation. This poem might have been shaped by the
situations Poe had to face at the time. There are many instances that could have led to this. For example,
Sarah Elmira Royster was Poe's fiance at the time however her parents sent her away upon finding out
about their engagement.
This could have been one of the reasons why Poe's dreams were crushed. His dream of becoming Sarah's
husband was tarnished. Poe also was in a massive amount of debt after gambling whilst attending the
University of Virginia. His wastefulness alienated him from his father which caused Poe to drop out.
Thus, Poe's dream of graduating college was never fulfilled. These events might have caused him to write
this poem. The tone is depressing, bitter, disappointment and reflective as well. Poe says, "Let none of
earth inherit, That vision of my spirit" because he regrets making dreams without action plans. Poe uses
phrases such as "unfathomed tide" and "interminable pride” that means there are oceans that have yet to
be explored. He chooses to say, "interminable" instead of saying deep.
