ANALYSIS ASSIGNMENT 2 Due Date : 2nd September 2012

1. Find sup A and inf A, where

(i) A = {x ∈ R | x2 < 1}
(ii) A = {x ∈ R | 3x2 + 8x − 3 < 0}.
(iii) A = { n1 + 1
m
| m, n ∈ N}
n+(−1)n
(iv) A = { n
| n ∈ N}.

2. If ‘y’ be a positive real number show that there exists a natural number ‘m’
such that 0 < 21m < y

3. Let S be a bounded subset of R and T be a non-empty subset of S. Prove

that inf S ≤ inf T ≤ sup T ≤ supS

4. Let S and T be two non-empty bounded subsets of R and U = {x + y | x ∈

S, y ∈ T }. Prove that sup U = sup S + sup T, inf U = inf S + inf T .

5. Let S be a non-empty subset of R, bounded below and T = {−x | x ∈ S}.

Prove that the set T is bounded above and sup T = − inf S.

6. Let S be a bounded subset of R with sup S = M and inf S = m. Prove that the
set T = {x − y : x ∈ S, y ∈ S} is a bounded set and sup T = M − m, inf T =
m − M.

7. A and B are non-empty bounded subsets of R. Prove that

(i) sup A ∪ B = max{sup A, sup B},

(ii) inf A ∪ B = min{inf A, inf B}

8. Let S be a non-empty subset of R bounded below. A lower bound l of S is

such that for each natural number n there exists an element sn in S satisfying
sn < l + n1 . Prove that l = inf S.

9. Show that the subset S = {x ∈ Q | x > 0 and x2 > 2} is a non-empty subset

of Q, bounded below; but inf S does not belong to Q.
4−3l
(Hint : Assume inf S = l ∈ Q. Take r = 3+2l ∈ Q and show that either
2 2
0 < r < l if l > 2, or 0 < l < r if l < 2)
