Overview
Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize, and the main destination for travelers to this western Caribbean nation. San
Pedro is the only town on the island. Ambergris Caye has been the hub of Belizean area maritime trade for centuries.
Fishing, coconuts, and chicle were historic means of islanders support, but the last thirty years have led to a large growth
in both the Belize dive and scuba trade, and ecotourism. The rich variety of things to do in San Pedro Town makes
Ambergris Caye the gateway to Belize.

Diving and Snorkeling

While much of the flora and fauna is similar throughout the reef system, there are individual differences to be found
everywhere. A particular type of fish may be seen on almost every dive, but during mating season it may congregate in
only one or two areas in great numbers. Similarly, there are areas where grouper are known to shoal, others where large
stingray are prolific or where the diver may encounter a whale shark. The manta ray and spotted eagle ray are fairly
common, and the diver can reasonably expect to see one of these magnificent creatures during his visit.

Ruins
Lamanai Ruins: Most of these trips start with a short boat ride across the lee waters of Ambergris to the mainland, then
a trip up the beautiful New River. You will see many birds and perhaps manatees, crocodiles and other wildlife. Lamanai
has a wonderful setting on the New River Lagoon. You'll get a private tour of this Maya site and likely will see a troop of
black howler monkeys. Often includes lunch at Lamanai Outpost Lodge. About US$150 per person.

Altun Ha Ruins: You go by boat across to the mangrove cut, where you transfer to a van to visit this Maya site, which
dates back some 2,000 years, on the Old Northern Highway. There is an abundance of wildlife, such as monkeys... for the
more leisurely who would rather see the jungle, cool off, enjoy swinging like Jane and Tarzan, and perhaps get mood mud
treatments and lunch at Maruba Spa. Much less travel time than the Lamanai trip. About US$125 per person.

Tikal: The Tikal ruins in the Petén district of Guatemala are, in excavated area at least, larger and more spectacular than
any Maya site in Belize. It's an astounding place. The only way to get there and back in one day from San Pedro is to fly to
the air strip at Flores.

Artists
The quality and variety of art available in Belize and Ambergris Caye is quite exciting! The Caribbean lifestyle is superbly
shown by the local artists. Seascapes, Garifuna artwork, animal paintings, local street scenes, amazing landscapes. You
must see them to believe them.
