Kodu: Getting started

Note: The first time you open Kodu Game Lab you may find yourself watching a video. Once this has played, you’ll get to Kodu.
The video won’t come up the next time you open Kodu.

A. Teacher getting started:


The Kodu Classroom Kit at http://www.kodugamelab.com/about can be helpful but contains a lot of
text.

Two options for tutorials:


1. Video tutorials can be found at the bottom of the resources page -

Note: The ‘Making Landscapes: Terrain tutorial’ uses X box controller rather than mouse and
keyboard
2. Open Kodu Game Lab. Click on the green house. Choose Load world.
Click on the green arrows or use the keyboard right and left arrows until you find First Tutorial
which will get you started.
Follow this with the programming Kodu tutorial, Add/Paint Terrain Tutorial and Score Tutorial.

B. Children getting started:


1. Open Kodu Game Lab, Choose New World
• What can you make happen?
• Talk about discoveries

2. Click on Green home


• Choose New World (you can save or discard what you have made)
• Add Kodu to the World (select Kodu then click on terrain)
• Right click on Kodu and choose program
• What can make Kodu do?
• Keep coming back to press play to see what happens
• Add other objects to the world
• What can you make happen now?

3. Click on Green home, Choose New World (you can save or discard what you have made)
• Add terrain using the green brush
• Experiment with the different types of terrain

4. Add Kodu and objects to the world you have created.


• Program Kodu and the objects

5. Click on Green home


• Choose Load World (you can save or discard what you have made)
• Use arrows or arrow keys to find Score Tutorial
• Add the programming to the game which will let you keep score

6. Watch:
