TITLE: Stability analysis of IEEE type 1 AC excitation system
OBJECTIVE:
To use Routh-Hurwitz stability criteria:
(i) To analyze effect of regulator gain and time constant
(ii) To analyze effect of exciter time constant
on the stability of IEEE type 1 AC excitation system.
SOFTWARE USED: MATLAB R2018a
THEORY:
For simplified study, the system components of power system models are linearized. Transfer
function approach is one method to linearize the components. However, this approach is
applicable for small systems only. When we have small linearized mathematical models of a
given system, we may analyze its stability using Routh-Hurwitz criteria. In IEEE type 1 AC
excitation system model [1], we mainly have blocks representing transfer function of generator,
exciter, regulator and regulator amplifier as shown in Fig.1. Hence Routh-Hurwitz criteria is
suitable for analyzing the stability of this system.
Parameter description:
KA Regulator amplifier gain KG Generator gain
τA Regulator amplifier time constant τG Generator time constant
KE Exciter gain KR Regulator gain
τE Exciter time constant τR Regulator time constant
SE Saturation function
Neglecting saturation and limiter function, the forward transfer function for the system is given
by
K A KG
G(s)
1 As KE E s 1 G s (1)
and feedback transfer function is given by
KR
H ( s)
1 Rs (2)
Hence, open loop transfer function is given by
K A KG K R
G( s) H (s)
1 As KE E s 1 G s 1 R s (3)
The characteristic equation is given by
1 G(s) H (s) 0 (4)
which leads to
a4 s 4 a3 s 3 a2 s 2 a1s a0 0 (5)
where
a4 1

K ( K E A )( R G ) 1

Observing the sign changes in first column of the Routh array (Table I), stability of system may
be determined. For a stable system, all elements in first column must be positive. The number of
sign changes in first column gives the number of roots of characteristic equation in right half of
the s-plane, i.e., the number of closed loop poles in right half of the s-plane.
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
(i) (a) The parameters for the system represented in Fig. 1 has following values:
τA=0.1 τG=1.0 KE=-0.05 KG=1.0
τE=0.5 τR=0.05 KA=40
Use Routh-Hurwitz criteria to determine the range of parameter KR for stable
operating condition.
(b) The parameters for the system represented in Fig. 1 has following values:
τA=0.1 τG=1.0 KE=-0.05 KG=1.0
τE=0.5 KR=0.03 KA=40
Use Routh-Hurwitz criteria to determine the range of parameter τR for stable
operating condition.
(ii) The parameters for the system represented in Fig. 1 has following values:
τA=0.1 τG=1.0 KE=-0.05 KG=1.0
τR=0.05 KR=0.03 KA=40
Use Routh-Hurwitz criteria to determine the range of parameter τ E for stable
operating condition.
