ACTIVITY 1
1. Is there still a need for English teachers to develop courses for ESP despite the
fact that everything could just be accessed through the web with just a click
away? Why or why not?
As time passes by, the need of the students to learn ESP must always be
considered in order for it to emphasize the focus of such language in particular fields
considering its relevance to their specializations. Despite the fact that there are
resources that can be accessed on internet, the teachers, on the other hand have to
develop courses that are necessary to attain the learner-centered approach for the
development of the students’ communicative competence as one of its focuses.
Learning the English language is not an easy task, so as teaching it. With that, teachers
should always do their part on this matter by providing approaches and make the
students explore on their learning by letting them use online resources at the same
time. One cannot deny that advanced technology has helped the learners in many
ways. In addition, an independent learning is a good way to learn the language from
different domain but that does not mean that the students have to depend on internet
alone just because the time lets them to do so. Everything that can be accessed
through web cannot guarantee effective learning that is why the teachers need to
develop courses especially for ESP so that the knowledge of such will avoid confusions
and misunderstanding.
In conclusion, the teacher should just integrate the use of internet in developing
courses in teaching the language for specific disciplines because it has always been
useful to every learner in 21 st Century Learning instead of doing the latter (pertaining to
the question). At the end of the day, the development of web-based courses would be
beneficial to both teachers and learners in prioritizing the learner’s competence.
2. “Tell me what you need English for and I will tell the English that you need.”
How justifiable do you think this claim is for ESP?
ESP stands for English for Specific Purpose which means that English must be
taught differently to students with different specializations. This principle mentioned
above has an important relation to ESP because it suggests an approach to language
teaching which focuses on the students’ learning. This also means that English, as an
internationally accepted language has its own diversity when it comes to its particular
domains. The needs of the students in learning the language in specific fields must be
the first consideration a teacher has to take in order for him to know what it is that he is
going to teach to his students. Analyzing the learners’ needs contributes to the process
of language learning. You cannot just teach Engineering-related terms to an Education
student because they have their own focus on such. I think, the principle is justifiable
enough in a way that it provides a complete understanding on how a teacher should
deal the students’ learning with specific needs. The said claim also tries to emphasize
that English has specific purpose because what’s convenient for one learner may not be
the same to all learners.
3. The clear relevance of the English course to their needs would improve their
learners’ motivation and thereby make learning better and faster.
a. Give three ways in which “relevance” can be achieved?
1. The teacher should always consider first the needs and interests of students in
language learning in order to understand what are the strategies and approaches he is
going to provide along the process.
2. The course must be designed for specific fields so that it would not emphasize
confusion during the process of learning. While it is true that each student still has
differences with their learning style, at least the concept of having distinctive developed
courses help them to improve their language competence based on their specialization.
3. Since learning the second language is complex. The development of materials should
also be on the line. The assessment of learners’ learning must not compromise their
willingness to learn. With that, the materials to be given should achieve the lesson’s
objectives and make the students want to learn more about the course as well.
