Created: 1884

The Spoliarium (often misspelled Spolarium) is a


painting by Filipino painter Juan Luna. Luna, working
on canvas, spent eight months completing the
painting which depicts dying gladiators. The painting
was submitted by Luna to the Exposición Nacional de
Bellas Artes in 1884 in Madrid, where it garnered the
first gold medal (out of three). "Luna's Spoliarium with
its bloody carcasses of slave gladiators being
dragged away from the arena where they had
entertained their Roman oppressors with their lives...
stripped to satisfy the lewd contempt of their Roman
persecutors with their honor.

The Builders is one of Victorio Edades’ major works that


he exhibited in 1928 during his one-man show. Edades
executed this upon his return to the Philippines from
studies in the United States. In his campaign for
modernism, this is one of his paintings that shows his
enhanced knowledge and skill in modern art. This artwork
emphasized linear and structural composition above other
pictorial elements, conveying the essence of men
engaged in labor through the contortion of the bodies.

BAYANIHAN is a Filipino word derived from the


word bayan meaning town, nation, or community in
general. "Bayanihan" literally means, "being a bayan," and
is thus used to refer to a spirit of communal unity and
cooperation. Although bayanihan can manifest itself in
many forms, it is probably most clearly and impressively
displayed in the old tradition of neighbors helping a
relocating family by getting enough volunteers to carry the
whole house, and literally moving it to its new location.

V. Francisco is already generating much buzz. The
painting is said to depict a courship ritual and Botong's
interpretation of the equality between the Filipino and
Filipina. Besides this, there is a recognition of the
strength of the Northern tribes of the Philippines and their
unapologetic display of their own culture, without bending
to the strong influenece from the west.

five members, the women enact a variety of postures and

monotony of the horizontal sea and sky. No matter what
direction they face, they are lit by an intractable glow or
source of light. No one among them can escape the light
of dawn.
