Introduction To For It & Non-It Professionals: Artificial Intelligence

The document introduces machine learning and discusses its goals, relationship to human learning, and key characteristics. Specifically, it states that the goal of machine learning is for computer systems to learn from experience and adapt to their environments. It also notes that machine learning systems generate knowledge stored in machines, similar to how human learning generates knowledge stored in the brain. Finally, it outlines several applications of machine learning like image recognition and discusses how machine learning uses large data sets and complex algorithms to produce knowledge without explicit programming.

INTRODUCTION TO

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
FOR IT & NON-IT PROFESSIONALS
WHAT IS MACHINE LEARNING
WHAT IS MACHINE LEARNING (ML)

• The goal of ML or machine learning is to build computer systems that

can learn from their experience and adapt to their environments
• it also means an increase in its knowledge so that next time the same
thing happens the system can show enhanced performance or
behavior
MACHINE LEARNING VS HUMAN LEARNING

• Human learning is a process of acquiring and updating knowledge

• Human learning may occur as part of education, personal
development or any other informal/formal training, learning from
environment
• Both human as well as ML generate knowledge, one residing in the
brain & the other in the machine
CHARACTERISTICS OF MACHINE
LEARNING
• Image/object recognition, speech recognition or language comprehension
and automated report writing are based on ML
• The potential of combining human and ML, for example, in Healthcare
• ML has become a rapidly growing subset of AI research
• The application of so-called Neural Network software, mimicking functions of
the human brain coupled with the availability of low-cost massive
computational hardware resources provides opportunities to solve problems
which so far have relied on human brain-power.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MACHINE
LEARNING
• Huge data pools (Big Data) consisting of medical or financial
information, picture libraries or info about customer behavior to name
just a few are processed with various types of highly complex algos to
produce digital knowledge without conventional programming
• Interactive brain-training as provided by several companies is possibly
one way to improve our learning capacity.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MACHINE
LEARNING
• Sports activities, sleep, healthy diets, reading or meditation provide
other means to support brain health.
