Unit 2 assignment
Advanced Practice Nursing is a patient-focused approach that uses a wide range of
competencies to improve patients and populations' health outcomes in a specialized area.
Advance practice nursing incorporates high specialized skills such as guidance and coaching and
specific medical interventions (Tracy et al., 2019). Advanced practice nursing is guided by a
conceptual model that combines three primary criteria and seven core competencies.
Advanced practice nursing is further defined by a conceptual model integrating three
primary criteria: graduate education, certification, and practice focused on patients/family.
Graduate education provides the competency needed to practice at the advanced level of nursing.
Advanced Practice Nurses must get certified in the field where they will practice. Certification
shows that nurses have the required competency to practice at this level, and it also gives them
recognition.
Advance Practice Nursing third's criterion focus on patients and their families. The
reaction between nurses and their patients is the core of nursing. Advanced Practice Nurses
become clinical expertise when they work with patients and families in various specialties.
Working with patients and families allows APR nurses to immerse in practice, which is
essential for advancing clinical expertise (Tracy et al., 2019).
Advanced Practiced Registered Nursing encompasses the four APRN roles. A nurse
must complete an accredited graduate-level education program that prepares him/her to
qualify for one of the four recognized APRN roles and a population focus (Tracy et al., 2019).
The APRN nurse must sit and pass a national certification examination to practice as an
APRN. Graduate studies provide APRN nurses with the clinical knowledge and skills needed
to provide direct care for patients.

The population I want to serve in my Advance Nursing Practice Role is women- I want to
focus on women's health. I want to work with women across the continuum of care, from
adolescence to the childbearing years, including the prenatal period, the birthing process, the
postpartum period, and menopause and beyond (Doctor of Nursing Practice, 2021). As a
registered nurse, I have seen women suffer from conditions that are preventable or treatable. For
example, many women continue to die from cervical cancer, which is preventable through proper
screening and treatment when detected early. Women's health is not only important to women
themselves but the society by extension. Marquez & Walker (2017) believe that healthy women
lead to a healthy society. Women have challenges that they have to cope with during their
lifetime, including - breast Diseases, heart disease, menopause, pregnancy, reproductive hazards,
sexual problems, uterine conditions, and healthcare access. I want to work with women to ensure
that they receive the help they need to improve their health outcomes.
Certification opportunity in women's health is available from Drexel University. The
accredited online Women's Health/Gender-Related Nurse Practitioner Post-Master's Certificate
program provides MSN prepared nurses and healthcare professionals with advanced female
lifespan specialization. The program emphasizes the reproductive and gynecologic health needs
of women and their partners. Graduates of the program can offer gender-related services, such as
well-woman care to prenatal and postpartum care and common and complex women's health
issues. Courses focus on health promotion and disease prevention in primary and women's health
specialty practices (Drexel University, 2021).
Nurses can use this program's accreditation to work as advanced-practice clinicians,
educators, researchers, and leaders in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary healthcare
environment.

The program design embraces the competencies and skillsets required for today's
versatile nurse practitioner as medical knowledge expands, healthcare systems evolve, and
technology advances in response to health care needs and evidence-based research (Drexel
University, 2021). The program requires that I have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 to get
acceptance. Additionally, I will have to complete a specific number of supervised clinical hours
to apply what they have learned in women's health patients' real-life care.
My current studies in the master's program here at Purdue Globally is the first step in my
quest to become a Nurse Practitioner in Women's Health. To get licensure in New York, where I
work, I must complete graduate studies in nursing to register as a nurse practitioner. New York
State Education Department (NYSED) offers licensure in Women's Health. Once I get the
licensure from the state of New York, I plan to work for two years to gain clinical experience,
after which I plan to complete the doctoral program in Nurse Practitioner. I hope to seek further
licensure to teach Women's Health at the tertiary level.
As a Nurse practitioner, I will have to practice according to the New York State
Education Law. I will not need physician supervision, but I am responsible for diagnosing and
treating my patients based on written practice protocols and agreement with a collaborating
physician. When I complete 3600 hours of work in my field, I can collaborate with one or more
qualified physicians or New York State Health Department licensed healthcare facilities.
A variety of New York and federal laws affect financial relationships between health care
practitioners. Education Law or professional misconduct regulations prohibits some types of
financial relationships between nurse practitioners (NPs) and collaborating physicians. New
York State Education Law and professional misconduct regulations prohibit a collaborating
physician and an NP from engaging in "fee-splitting" or "kick-backs."
5
These legal prohibitions on "fee-splitting" and "kick-backs" ensure that medical and nursing
decisions rely on sound clinical judgment, uncompromised by economic or business
considerations (New York State Education Department, 2015).
A Nurse Practitioner in New York must complete a course in Infection Control every four
years. New York's state specifies this responsibility in the Rules of the Board of Regents, Part
29.2 (a)(13) and the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules, and Regulations of New York. All
nurses with prescriptive authority must complete at least three (3) hours of coursework or
training in pain management, palliative care, and addiction every three years (Assessment
Technology, 2021). After being certified and registered as a nurse practitioner (NP) by the
New York State Education Department (NYSED), an NP must take additional steps and obtain
other governmental approvals to practice or prescribe medications and medical devices (NYSED,
2020).
