Etymology
• First used around 1580, the name "durian" is derived from the Old
Malay language word dûrî (meaning 'thorn'), a reference to the
numerous prickly thorns of the rind, together with the noun-building
suffix -an.
• Scientific name: Durio zibethinus
Durian in Malaysia
• Despite having approximately 200 breeds of durians in Malaysia, each
breed is brimmed with exquisite flavour and aroma.
• When durians ripen and fall onto the ground, they tend to have more
flesh and a stronger aroma.
• The durian season usually occurs every June and July, and each durian
breed requires specific conditions to grow, such as rainfall, altitude,
temperature, constitution of the soil etc.
• Do you know that different durian breeds originate from different
states on Peninsular Malaysia?
• Here are various durian breeds and the states they were first breed in.
Musang King (D197)
• The ultimate Malaysian specialty — filled with buttery, thick flesh.
• This small-seeded breed is known for its robust flavour with a hint of
refreshing bitterness.
Origin of Musang King
• The origin of the name “Musang King” dates back to the 1980s, when
a man named Tan Lai Fook from Raub, Pahang stumbled upon a
durian tree in Gua Musang, Kelantan, Malaysia
• He brought the tree branch back to Raub, Pahang for grafting. The
news spreaded like wildfire as this new breed attracted other
cultivators.
• “Gua Musang” literally means “Civet Cave”, thus adopting the name
“Musang King” breathes life into this very durian breed, making the
fruit sound even more legendary.
Why Musang King so special?
• Superior taste makes it the King of Durians
• Widely considered as a delicacy, especially in China
• A true Malaysia treasure
• Value has grown exponentially in recent years
• Trees have an average lifespan of over 100 years
• Malaysia’s special envoy to China Tan Kok Wai said the country aimed to
export about 8,000 tonnes of durians annually, valued at around 800
million yuan (RM470mil), via chartered flights.
• Previously, only durian slices and pastes were exported to China or added
to other food products such as ice-cream.
