PORTFOLIO
of

Mudita lau

notes for viewers unfamiliar with computational design:

All works compiled in this Portfolio relies heavily on computational method of designing and
modeling. This involves the use of 3D modeling software called Rhinoceros and an algorithmic
modeling plug-in called Grasshopper.

Project “Paksa” #team #design #build

For the Architecture Student Union Anniversary, I was assigned to lead a team to design and build a
bamboo kinetic installation. “Paksa” has a literal meaning of “wings” in Sanskrit.

concept
The aim was to create a movement of swinging wings by
arranging a line of the multiple module. The body structure
were constructed from bamboo. The pulleys were created
with layered MDF. Later on, paper tube arms were moved

Porifera #team #remodel #build

For the final project of Algorithmic Design class, we were assigned to practice nesting and tagging script
and execute them with laser cutting machine. We decided to remodel a work by Zubin Khabazi called
Porifera.

process
Ivory paper sheets were lasercut, hand folded, and binded with
nylon thread to a PVC pipe structure.

“RMJM’s Fish” #individual #remodel

In the Structure and Form Studio,

I was assigned to study and remodel a
skyscrapper with unique form. I picked
RMJM’s Doumen Observation Tower in
Guangdong, China.
In the process of remodelling the “fish
tower”, I managed to write a grasshopper
script that could generate an adaptation
of the whole tower structure from a
single point input.

decorative lighting tinkering projects

Project “Ferrero” #individual #design #build

I had the idea to design and fabricate a 3D printed

decorative lighting when I learnt that a friend of mine had
printed and marketed his own decorative lighting with a
brand named “Virgola”. Then, I thought that with the help
of 3D printer, I can make something way cooler.

I decided that a perfect sphere would be an interesting

starting point. And, I have always wanted to sleep with
the stars above. So, the randomly generated and point
attracted triangle hole is how I brought “stars” into my
room.

Project Icosahedron #individual #design #build

Following the completion of “Ferrero”, I realized that the

production cost of 3D printing was to high and it would be
hard to market it. So, I developed an adaptation that could
be fabricated through laser-cutting.

Geodesic Icosahedron is taken as the primary form.

Randomized triangle holes are generated for lighting
purpose. Identic triangle parts are joint together with slits
(and much help of super glue).

“the closer you look, the less you see” #individual #design #build

The method is to place letters constructing one’s name by the help of image
sampler with their face photos brightness as the input.

“If you want to see your face, look at it from a far. If you look at it closely, all you
see is jumbled letters of your name.”
