Use of the document I

In the following pages are presented the practice drawings.

The 3D objects are assigned using a wide range of representation:
axonometric views, ortographics projections of single parts or of assemblies.
In addition to the drawing representation, the 3D model has been
incapsulated into this pdf le on the position marked by the following
gure:

Use of the document II

To properly see the 3D content, Acrobat Reader ® is required. To my

knowledge it is the only pdf viewer able to properly represent 3D models
and it supports all the Windows platforms, Mac OS and even Android.
For Linux users, instructions are available on internet regarding how to
download and install adobereader-enu:i386 version 9.5.5.
Should you nd a dierent pdf viewer (possibly multiplatform) please notify
me.
These slides were developed and tested under Linux/Acrobat Reader 9 and
were also tested on Windows 10 and Mac OS with the latest Acrobat
Reader DC where they worked properly.
It is convenient to modify the Acrobat Preferences as follows: Edit
Preferences 3D&Multimedia and select the rst tickbox of the right
panel to activate the option Enable playing of 3D content, because in this
way the 3D content will be activated immediatly when you click over it.

DTI March 17th, 2020 6 / 195

Forewords

Use of the document III

Should the option remain disabled, Acrobat will display a conrmation

dialog to ask if the 3D content should be trusted for the current session
only or also for every following access to the document.
To activate the 3D content it is required to click on it. Left clicking inside
the 3D area and dragging will rotate the component, a right click will
display the 3D context menu where the most important entries are:

Tools: it contains the list of view manipulation commands and at the

bottom the Show toolbar (or Hide toolbar) option.

Views: a complete set of views is preloaded into the pdf, Front, Back,
Left, Right, Top, Bottom and Isometric.

DTI March 17th, 2020 7 / 195

Forewords

Use of the document IV

When enabled, the toolbar is displayed just above the 3D object, when the
mouse is over it and the commands to manipulate or select the views can
be accessed through the buttons there represented.
The models are oriented in the 3D space so that the principal views are
corresponding to the ortographic projections of the solutions. At least for
the initial assignments.
Remember that the tangent lines are shown in the 3D models to
distinguish the dierent topologies of the surfaces, even when cylindrical
features are perfectly tangent to planar surfaces. In the drawings these
lines must not be represented.

Practice assignments Practice #4 Sections

Forewords I

In the following practice assignment sections could be used.

The encapsulated 3D models, in addition to the standard views, now
contains section entries inside the Views menu.
By choosing a section view, the model will be oriented accordingly, a
translucent section plane will be displayed and the intersection contour will
be displayed in red color.
To view the entire section plane it could be required to reduce the zoom
factor and by orientating the part it will be more eectively shown its
position and orientation.
The model is exported from Solidwork through File, Save As, Save as
Adobe Portable Document Format (*.pdf ), Save as 3D PDF. Clicking on
the Option button a window will show the 3DPDF exporter options that
are basically two: Accuracy and Use lossy compression on tesselation.

DTI March 17th, 2020 27 / 195

Practice assignments Practice #4 Sections

Forewords II
Because only full sections can be performed inside the pdf reader, for those
parts that require half sections or aligned sections it is also shown the 3D
sectioned part in addition to the 3D full model. The cut surfaces are
colored dierently, typically in red.

DTI March 17th, 2020 28 / 195

Practice assignments Practice #4 Sections

Forewords III
The pdf exporter saves the model in PRC format wich is a tesselated
format: only the external surfaces of the part are saved, but not the inside
volume. And these surfaces are approximated by triangulation. Accuracy
set a Cordal error and Lossy compression improves the compression
rates availing more imprecise geometry.
This is to say that in the sections all the parts will appear as empty shells,
because the pdf format is able to contain only tesselated formats (PRC or
U3D).

Isometric exploded view with dimensions III

In the assembly drawing on pag. 60 the thread is shown on the four screws
using a trick of the CAD system. The thread is simplied down to a
parallel set of revolved triangular undercuts in order to create a simple
geometry, not too much GPU intensive and not too large to save on the
disk. The threads inside the holes of the support are fully represented.
A note regarding the 3D assembly models: considering as example the
assembly of pag. 63 it's possible to right click on the 3D model and select
Show model tree. On the left, a side panel opens to show a tree view of
the assembly structure (just extend a few leaves). By right clicking over a
single component name is then possible to set the following properties:
Hide/Show, Isolate, Zoom to part, Transparent . . . . This allows to better
understand the part positioning.

Practice #9 Vee Support I

The assembly drawing below shows an adjustable V-shaped support, the

kind used to support cylindrical parts on mill tables.
Body n.1 is clamped on the milling machine table.
The threaded Shaft n.2 is adjusted in height by rotating the Cylindrical nut
n.4 (its outer surface is knurled for improved grip do not represent the
knurling on the drawing).
The Screw n.5 prevents the rotation of the Shaft n.2 because its elongated
cylindrical tip engages in a vertical slot made on the radial surface of the
Shaft.
The upper end of the threaded Shaft has a precise hole where the
replaceable V-shaped support n.3 is inserted.
Considering the dimensions shown in the drawing, make the dimensioned
drawings of the following parts: (1) Body, (2) Shaft, (3) V-shaped support,
(4) Cylindrical nut.

Note: assembly drawings are targeted to show the functioning of the

assembly, parts relative positioning, fastening devices, etc. . . and to identify
each component in the bill of material. Their purpose is NOT to provide
the information required to manufacture parts (geometry, dimensions,
tolerances, roughness . . . ), because for this purpose the part drawings are
intended to. Hence, the following drawing has been dimensioned for a
dierent intent: to avoid the long and tediuos task of retrieving the
dimensions from the printed paper.
A proper example of assembly drawing is represented on pag. 73, where the
dimensions represented are those referred to the interfaces and are required
for showing to the end user how this (sub)assembly will be positioned and
connected to the rest of the larger machine and how it works (stroke
length).
Add the appropriate chamfers and llets where required.

In the following 3D models the 3D thread geometry has been represented

for demonstration purposes only. In the assembly only the visible threads
were shown.
Notice that adding the 3D modelling of the helical cut of the thread makes
the model more GPU intensive and increases of about 89%÷727% the
dimension of the prc le with respect to the le with the cylindrical surface
only. For this reason 3D models of threads are seldom made.

The basic composition of an overhead conveyor is: a bridge that runs on

two rails mounted on the ceiling, on appropriate pillar brackets, a trolley
that moves orthogonally to the bridge and a winch attached to the trolley
for lifting loads (possible application: moving sheet metal rolls inside a
plant).

The assembly shown on page 92 represents one of the free wheels of the
overhead conveyor.

Practice #11-12 Description II

The shaft (1) shown in the drawing is xed (welded to the bridge) and has
only the function of supporting the wheel. At its end are mounted two
radial ball bearings (2) and around them rotates the wheel (5) which will
be guided by the rail mounted on the ceiling.
Two covers (6 and 7) close both sides of the wheel in order to lock the
outer rings, protect the rolling elements and contain the lubricating grease.
The axial constraint of the bearings (2) permits an axial clearance of the
inner rings, limited between the shaft shoulder and a retaining ring (9),
while the outer rings are locked by the cover centrings (6) and (7).
Two spacers are placed between the rings of the two bearings, one internal
(3) and one external (4), to ensure proper axial positioning and locking.
When the covers are fastened using the screws (8), the axial clearance
between external bearing rings and cover centrings must be zeroed. The
ange of the internal cover (6) contacts the hub surface, while the external

cover ange (7) should maintain a non-zero clearance with the wheel hub
surface.
The peelable gasket (11) is positioned under the ange of the external
cover (7). It allows the bearings to be blocked axially and recovers the
most part of the ange/hub clearance in order to avoid ange plastic
deformation under the screw axial load.
Inside the internal cover (6) there is a seat for the lubricant seal (10).

Functional requirements: radial ts I

Under the operating conditions, the bearings are subject to a (main) load
with a xed vertical direction indicated by the P letter in the gure on
page 89. This denes the bearing ts:

The outer ring rotates about the (heavy) load and must therefore be
mounted with a slightly forced t.

The inner ring is stationary with respect to the load direction and can
be coupled to the shaft with a less forced t to facilitate assembly.

From the bearing catalogue the following tolerances can be obtained:

inner ring bore Φ300−0.01 , outer ring diameter Φ720−0.013 .
The spacer 3 of the inner rings must be easily mounted and achieve a
good centering.

Spacer 4 must be easily mounted and precisely centered externally

with the housing.

#2 basic dimensions
The basic (nominal) value for d7 is the sum of 2 · d2 , d3 and the width of
the retaining ring groove.
The ring 30 DIN 471 has a thickness of d6 = 1.5h11 = 1.50−0.06 mm and
the groove is dg = 1.6H13 = 1.6+
0
0.14
mm.

d7 = 2d2 + d3 + dg = 2 · 19 + 19.1 + 1.6 = 58.7 mm

Notice that only the basic value has been calculated and that dg tolerance
is not part of the tolerance path.
Tolerances for rst attempt calculation:

d6 = 1.50−0.06 mm from ring standard DIN 471. Fixed.

d7 = 58.7±0.3 mm from ISO 2768-m.
The stack contains again d2 and d3 dimensions. The tolerance of a
functional measure, already dened in a previous analysis, which becomes
part of a subsequent stack-path, must NOT be changed, otherwise the
previous analisys is invalidated.

Inner and outer spacer roughness

Inner spacer Φ30F 8 has an IT8 tolerance. The maximum compatible

roughness is Ra 1.25.
Outer spacer Φ72e 8 has an IT8 tolerance. The maximum compatible
roughness is Ra 1.25.

For both rings, the important contact surfaces are the two front
surfaces and a proper roughness must be prescribed there. For the
total width d3 = 19.1 mm the tolerance is 0.04 mm. Checking on the
ISO IT/tolerance table it results that the tolerance for that diameter is
corresponding an IT grade between IT8 and IT9. Considering IT8, on
the IT/roughness table it results Ra = 1.25 as a compatible value.

Practice assignments Practice #11 Stack-ups and geometrical tolerances

Fastener holes I

the position tolerance for the holes can be calculated applying the xed
fasteners formula, because it is appropriate for the cap screw assembly used
in this design:
DMMC − V
Tpos =
2

The screw is M6, the passing through hole is Φ6.6 then Tpos = 0.3 mm (ref
b3 ). It is applied to all cover holes and their threaded counterparts on the
wheel.
The thread tolerance for the holes used in the wheel to x the covers is set
to 7H (screwing lenght Long, medium precision, without coating).
The screw head is embossed of 0.5 mm below the external surface of the
covers and the total screw lenght is 26 mm. Considering the thickness of
the covers, the screwing lenght is Lscrewing = 16.5 mm.

DTI March 17th, 2020 132 / 195

Practice assignments Practice #11 Stack-ups and geometrical tolerances

Fastener holes II

Remembering that the M6 coarse pitch is p = 1 mm the drilling and

tapping depths can be calculated as:

T = Lscrewing + 2 ÷ 3p = 16.5 + 2 · 1 = 18.5 ' 19 mm

H = T + 3 ÷ 6p = 19 + 4 · 1 = 23 mm

DTI March 17th, 2020 133 / 195

Practice assignments Practice #11 Stack-ups and geometrical tolerances

Internal cover

The front mating surface is the primary datum. A very low atness
(0.005 mm) and a limited roughness ( Ra = 0.8) have been chosen in order
to obtain a minimum of solid lubricant retainment (grease) considering the
sealing enforced by direct surface to surface contact without gasket b4 .
The same should be applied to the wheel counterpart surface, but being
the wheel symmetrical and then assemblable both ways the same
prescriptions must be applied to the two surfaces interfacing the covers.
Passthrough hole of the cover is Φ44, the diameter of the shaft is Φ41. A
position tolerance of Φ1 is applied, well below the dierence of diameters.
For the seat of the gasket, the supplier requires a tolerance of H8. The
chamfer at the edge of the seat should be 1.5 ÷ 2.5 × 30◦ .
A location tolerance of Φ0.2 has been applied to the cylindrical seat in
order to maintain the coaxiality. The value is slightly smaller than what
was required by the gasket catalogue.

DTI March 17th, 2020 134 / 195

Practice assignments Practice #11 Stack-ups and geometrical tolerances

External cover
Between the external cover ange and the wheel surface a peelable gasket
must be applied.
Supposing:

Cr = (30 ÷ 35)%
HL = 1.1 ± 0.1 mm
HCmax = HLmax (1 − CRmin ) = 1.2 × 0.7 = 0.84 mm
∆ = (HLmin − Cs ) − HCmax = (1 − 0.1) − 0.84 = 0.06 mm

Considering that a surface planarity of 0.005 mm has already been applied

to the wheel surfaces, for the sealing with cover without gasket, then
0.055 mm of planarity are still available for this surface.
A planarity of 0.05 mm has been applied to the surface of the cover datum
(ref. b5 ).

Solutions Practice #10

Part 10-1 Body I

This part has been dimensioned with a technological intent particularly for
the diameters and angles. Considering the diameters on the right the tool
must follow the following path:

reach diameter Φ19 before the part edge,

turn Φ19 for a lenght of 1 mm,

move on a trajectory inclined 45

◦ until Φ20 is reached,

turn the diameter Φ20 until the position of 6 mm from the front edge,

move on a trajectory inclined 45

◦ until Φ22 is reached,

turn diameter Φ22 until the rear end of the part is reached.

The same applies on the rear side: turn Φ19 until the position of 6 mm is
reached then move on a trajectory inclined 45
◦ until the diameter Φ22 is
reached.

Fit characterization Φ16H7/f7 III

Clearance/Interference condition:

in MMC hole is bigger than shaft (Dmin > dmax ), then the minimum
clearance occur;

in LMC hole is bigger than shaft (Dmax > dmin ), then the maximum
clearance occur.

This is characterized as a clearence t.

Clearance calculation:

Gmin = (Dmin − dmax ) = 16 − 15.984 = 0.016 mm;

Gmax = (Dmax − dmin ) = 16.018 − 15.966 = 0.052 mm.
