XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

1. Welcome to XPAC 2006

Welcome to XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3.

This document details the updates and enhancements made to XPAC 2006 since the last release.

1.1. Important Notes

ƒ For users running Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you will notice that the Windows Firewall will
detect a program called ‘Database Service Manager’ (w3dbsmgr.exe) trying to access the network.
This program is the database engine XPAC uses for Large Model Support. It can be blocked by the
firewall without causing problems to XPAC.
ƒ Additional validation is now performed by XPAC when opening databases to ensure the consistency
of the data. In some cases this may result in warnings of inconsistencies when opening existing
models in XPAC 2006, due to pre-existing inconsistencies being detected. These inconsistencies can
be repaired by XPAC’s built-in repair tool – please contact Runge Support for assistance with this
tool.

2. New Features and Enhancements

This section describes the updates and enhancements available in XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3.

2.1. Scheduling
The ‘Select Period Range’ dialog that is displayed when running a schedule has been modified to include
an option to select the recalculation start point of the schedule. This enhancement has been added at
the request of users, and is in addition to the existing option located in the schedule setup tree. There is
also an option to force the schedule to always run from ‘Initial Status’. In addition a value of -1 can be
passed to RunActiveScenario to run the schedule from ‘Initial Status’ and -2 can be passed to run the
schedule from ‘Clear Scenario Data’.

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

A new screen has been added to the input path to more easily allow the creation of input paths that
mine from stockpiles. The Insert Stockpile dialog can be accessed from the input path control in a
similar fashion to the Insert Block dialog.

It is typically used once an initial schedule has been run to build the stockpile, and presents the user
with the available stockpile records at the end of any period. The user can enter in quantities for any
lower-level stockpile record that they wish to insert into the stockpile, move the period selector back
and forwards to see the stockpile quantities change, select which fields to view in the window, and select
to view one or more of the opening inventory, closing inventory, movements into the stockpile, and
movements out of the stockpile. An expanded section on this dialog is included at the end of these
release notes (see Insert Stockpile Dialog Explained)

Input paths now have two additional context menu commands: Remove All Following Steps and
Remove All Following Stockpile Steps. The first removes all steps following the currently-selected step;
the second removes all steps following the currently-selected step where the Scheduling Task is a
stockpile record.

The Search facility in the output path window has been extended to allow searching for a destination
record.

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

A new option has been added to the Insert Block dialog: Only Transfer Non-Empty Tasks. The option
will filter out any tasks that have a zero quantity in either the Zero Test Data Field of the activity or the
Accumulation Data Field for any resources in the current scenario.

ƒ The Insert Block dialog for dump paths no longer asks for an activity (as dump paths do not contain
activities)
ƒ Several instances of dumping via classified field not performing as expected have been rectified
ƒ The accelerator keys Control+X (cut), Control+C (copy), Control+V (paste) and Control+A (select
all) have been enabled on the Production Details screen under the resources. They function on the
text for each of the text and editable drop-down combo boxes on that screen.
ƒ The limit on the number of cells allowed in the ‘Insert Block’ dialog for the Preschedule and Mined
Out Quantities has been increased
ƒ The Joint Path View tracking of input steps in the output path has been fixed when toggling
resources on and off

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

2.2. 3D Graphics
There is now the option to specify a 3D extrusion for 3D graphics plots. The extrusion is specified as a
direction in the X-Y plane and a direction in the Z plane, as well as specifying the distance. These new
options are accessed from the Polygons tab of a 3D plot setup.

Two new options have been added to the Polygon Transfer View: Only Transfer Non-Empty Tasks; and
Only Transfer Activities for Active Resource. The first option will filter out any tasks that have a zero
quantity in either the Zero Test Data Field of the activity or the Accumulation Data Field for any
resources in the current scenario. The second option filters out any tasks where the activity cannot be
performed by the active resource (the resource whose input path is currently being edited).

Non-absolute address dependencies can be selected in the view box in 3D graphics

Refreshing a plot will now refresh the contents of the range, so that if the range has been modified
outside of the plot, the modified range will be used.

© Runge Ltd 2005 – 2006 New Features and Enhancements 11

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

When the selection cursor is held over a block in a 3D graphics plot, XPAC will display a tool-tip that
shows the values of the fields defined by the user. The user can select any set of fields by creating a
transposed field display template. Previously the code of the field was used to identify each row in the
tool-tip, but this led to confusion when the same field code was used for multiple rows in different
sections of the database. To overcome this problem, a new option has been added to the Polygon
Graphics section of the Global Options dialog.

The new option gives the user more control over the format of the field description shown in polygon
graphic tool tips. By enabling this option, the field name in tool-tips will be based on the full row code,
starting at the level specified in the text box.
The data table of the polygon graphics Transfer View displays also displays fields defined in the selected
field template. The changes made to the tool-tips have also been applied to the Transfer View column
headers.

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

2.3. Database
The right-click context menu in the database view now has the option to view field statistics. The field
option in the field statistics dialog automatically selects the current field.

The warning message displayed by the main database when more than 225 siblings are present can now
be disabled. The option can be toggled in Global Options:

Importing data with position tables active has been improved.

2.4. Scripting

2.4.1. Miscellaneous

ƒ Querying output path steps now returns resource names even if the scenario is not the active
scenario
ƒ The ‘#include’ option in scripts now follows the scripts directory as specified in the project
options
ƒ GetRecFromPilEx has been modified to abort if a negative value is passed. This makes it
consistent with the documentation, which states a value of 0 should be used to ignore a level.
ƒ An issue where GetRecName does not abort a script if passed invalid argument has been
corrected.

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

2.4.2. New Scripting Methods

ƒ GetScriptExecutionRange – Returns the range over which the current script is being
executed.

2.5. Schedule Report Writer Enhancements

2.5.1. Modified Filters

The Report Writer filters StartedTask, CompletedTask, LastStartedTask and

LastCompletedTask have been modified to clarify their meanings. As part of these modifications,
these filters can now be successfully combined with other filters (but not each other) within one
reporting line. In addition, the filters FirstTask, FirstStartedTask, LastTask and
LastCompletedTask have been added. These changes arose out of a growing lack of clarity as to
which filter to use in different circumstances, and how each filter functioned in specific instances. The
details of how each of these operate is included in the diagram on the following page.

2.5.2. New Filters

ƒ TaskPercent – returns the percent of the database record taken in the current scheduling output
step (values between 0 and 100)
ƒ FirstTask – Returns true for the first productive step in a given period, and causes the result
field to report a non-prorated value
ƒ FirstStartedTask – Returns true for the first started productive step in a given period, and
causes the result field to report a non-prorated value
ƒ LastTask – Returns true for the last productive step in a given period, and causes the result field
to report a non-prorated value
ƒ LastCompletedTask – Returns true for the last completed productive step in a given period,
and causes the result field to report a non-prorated value

2.5.3. New Results

ƒ MinStep – Returns the minimum amount of the specified main database field taken by a
scheduling step for all steps within a reporting period
ƒ MinDB – Returns the minimum amount of the specified main database field for all steps within a
reporting period
ƒ MinOrigStep – Returns the minimum amount of the specified main database field taken by a
scheduling step for all steps within a reporting period, using the original database value
ƒ MinOrigDB – Returns the minimum amount of the specified main database field for all steps
within a reporting period, using the original database value
ƒ MaxStep – Returns the maximum amount of the specified main database field taken by a
scheduling step for all steps within a reporting period
ƒ MaxDB – Returns the maximum amount of the specified main database field for all steps within a
reporting period
ƒ MaxOrigStep – Returns the maximum amount of the specified main database field taken by a
scheduling step for all steps within a reporting period, using the original database value
ƒ MaxOrigDB – Returns the maximum amount of the specified main database field for all steps
within a reporting period, using the original database value

2.8. General
ƒ XPAC now supports two versions of TPL files: version 7 (XPAC 2005) and version 8 (which is used
to transfer data to Xact). This can be selected by changing the file filter in the file prompt dialog box
when exporting. When importing, the version is read of the file and handled appropriately.
ƒ Improvements to the database and input path repair tools to increase the cases they can handle.
ƒ Improvements to reduce incidences of database inconsistencies.
ƒ When backing up an XPAC project, the default filename of the zip file now includes the current date
and time.
ƒ The XPAC Event Log now has options to control whether the event log window will flash in the
task bar based on what types of messages are displayed.
ƒ The XPAC Event Log is no longer opened for a repair operation, as it is not required.
ƒ In rare circumstances, extended delays have been experienced when viewing certain screens in
XPAC. This issue has been addressed.
ƒ Updated documentation.

2.9. Insert Stockpile Dialog Explained

2.9.1. Introduction.

Previously, users had to use the Insert Block dialog to insert stockpile records into input paths. A
limitation of the Insert Block dialog is that it only indicates which stockpiles exist in the database at the
end of the schedule and does not take into account when the stockpiles were made. It also shows the
quantity of material moved to the stockpile but does not take depletions from the stockpile into
account. To overcome these limitations, the Insert Stockpile dialog has been added to XPAC to
specifically help when adding stockpile steps to input paths. The Insert Block dialog remains available as
before.

2.9.2. Opening the Input Stockpile Dialog

The Input Stockpile dialog is opened in exactly the same way as the Insert Block dialog. Right click the
step in the input path where you want to insert the new step or steps, and then choose the insert
Stockpile Menu option.
This option will open the Input Stockpile dialog, allowing you choose how much you should select from
each stockpile. The right-click menu option is available from the Polygon graphics input path view,
Input path views in the schedule set-up tree and from the Joint Path view. The Joint path view is quite
useful when fine tuning stockpile movements, as it synchronises the output path step with the input
path step, so you can confirm the requested material was scheduled.

© Runge Ltd 2005 – 2006 New Features and Enhancements 17

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

2.9.3. Selecting which Stockpiles are in the Insert Stockpile Dialog

The Insert Stockpile dialog has two main windows – the tree on the left and the data window on the
right. Each element in the tree represents a stockpile and the checkboxes allow the user to define which
stockpiles he wishes to see in the data window.
By default, all stockpiles will be ticked when the dialog opens. The right hand window will contain one
line representing the total of all stockpiles and a line representing the total for each stockpile. These
lines are greyed to indicate they are not lower level records and cannot be inserted into a path. Under
each parent are the pile records that contain the material in each stockpile.

2.9.4. Selecting the Period the Insert Stockpile Dialog refers to

Because of the dynamic nature of stockpiles, they usually exist for a limited portion of the schedule and
it is important the user can determine which stockpiles are available at different points during the
course of the schedule.
The Period list box at the top of the Insert Stockpile allows the user to select the period he is interested
in. The list box lists all the periods in the calendar database and when a period is selected, the dialog
automatically updates to reflect the status at the start of the selected period. This involves two main
steps.
Ensure the list of stockpiles is updated so that it only displays the stockpiles that were available during
the selected period. Stockpiles that were fully depleted in earlier periods and stockpiles that have not yet
been constructed will not be displayed.
Adjust the quantities shown in the data table to reflect the status of the stockpile at the selected period.
The type and nature of the information displayed in the data table for a given period can be controlled
by the user and the options available have been described in the following sections.

18 New Features and Enhancements © Runge Ltd 2005 – 2006

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

2.9.5. Selecting the Fields to display in the Insert Stockpile Dialog

The data table on the right hand side of the dialog is used to display quality and quantity information
about each pile and each available stockpile. When the dialog is first opened, it will display the fields
currently used as the ADF’s of each active resource in the scenario. Thereafter, the user can add and
remove fields using the Path fields menu option displayed when a row of the input path table is right
clicked.

This menu option displays the default Scheduling Path Field Selection dialog. There are no pre-defined
scheduling fields for input paths but any main database field can be selected using the New Fields
button.

2.9.6. Defining what data should be displayed in each field

The user can decide how the Insert Stockpile dialog should display each of the chosen fields. When the
table is first displayed, each of the selected fields will be displayed in four columns, as follows:

o Opening Inventory (the inventory at the start of the period)

o Closing Inventory (the inventory at the start of the period)
o In (the material added to the stockpile during the period)
o Out (the material depleted from the stockpile during the period)

© Runge Ltd 2005 – 2006 New Features and Enhancements 19

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

These options are available from the context sensitive menu that is displayed when any row of the
Insert Stockpile dialog is right-clicked. There is an option to Display or Hide each of the four columns,
and the current status is indicated by ticks against the associated menu item.

2.9.7. Allocating Activities to each Stockpile

Before the Insert Stockpile dialog can add steps into an input path, the user must associate each stock
pile with an activity. Activities can be assigned to each stockpile by selecting the Activity menu option,
after any row of the Insert Stockpile dialog is right-clicked. This will display a sub-menu showing each
stockpile in the scenario and when the cursor is held over each of these, a sub-menu allows selection of
the activity typically associated with it.

When the Insert Stockpile dialog is first used, all stockpiles will be allocated to the first activity.

20 New Features and Enhancements © Runge Ltd 2005 – 2006

XPAC 2006, Version 7.7.3 Release Notes

2.9.8. Adding Stockpile steps into the Input Path

In order to add a stockpile step into the input path, the user must enter the required quantity in the Qty
column. These values are quoted in quantities, rather than as a percentage. The user can enter values for
more than one stockpile and when the OK button is clicked, a step will be inserted in the input path,
requesting the specified tonnage from each stockpile with a quantity value. The activity used for blocks
from each stockpile will agree with the settings described in the previous section.

The steps are inserted into the input path at the point that was selected when the Insert Stockpile dialog
was displayed (by right clicking a row in the input path table).
