Assessment
Your essay will be graded from 0-22 using the “FAE Writing Criteria” (available on the course moodle page):
 2 points: Meets Task Requirements (submission, answers question, word count, other)
 5 Points: Argument (thesis statement, stance / claim / position, scope, focus and coherence, reasoning / logical fallacies)
 5 Points: Support (quoting / paraphrasing, use / relevance of support, integrating material, analysis of sources)
 5 Points: Language (grammar, vocabulary, tone / register, formal style)
 3 Points: Readability (introduction, paragraph structure, conclusion, clarity)
 2 Points: Formatting (in-text referencing, end-text referencing, punctuation / typing, layout)
Task Requirements
To get 2 points for “meets task requirements” (9% of essay grade) you must:
 write a first draft by hand in 3 class hours and submit it for feedback;
 write 1,000-1500 words (+/- 5%) and 5-6 paragraphs
 refer to at least three of the written sources from the essay cycle;
 carefully word process your draft essay making any necessary minor edits, corrections and changes;
 submit an electronic copy of typed draft 1 to turnitin via the class moodle by the agreed deadline;
 deliver a printed copy of draft 1 to the instructors office using by the agreed deadline, with a copy of the “FAE
Writing Feedback Sheet” as a front cover;
 follow instructor feedback when working on draft 2;
 submit an electronic copy of the final draft 2 to turnitin via the class moodle by the agreed deadline;
 deliver a printed copy of draft to the instructor’s office by the agreed deadline, with a copy of the “FAE
Writing Criteria” as a front cover;
To get 2 points for “formatting” (9% of essay grade) you must:

 include correct in-text citations and a reference/works cited list in Chicago Manual (CMS) author-date style;
 set your word processor's document language to English US and enable the spelling and grammar checker to
identify and correct your errors;
 closely follow the essay formatting example on the moodle, including;
o size 12 readable font
o double line spacing
o name and number in headers
o page numbers in footers
o titles centered and bold

• Your 3 or more topic sentences for your paragraphs
• The (location of) quotes/paraphrases you have chosen to discuss / examples you have chosen

Preparation for writing sessions:
Writing workshops will emulate exam conditions as nearly as is practical:

 the essay booklet, printed from the moodle
 the course reading booklet
 pencil/pen, eraser/whiteout, etc. (duh!)

 your outline
 paper dictionaries – bilingual or monolingual
You may NOT bring/use:

 draft essays pre-prepared in whole or part
 iphones / ipads / laptops / electronic dictionaries
Organization: Elements of an ENG 102 essay
TITLE– (required: a two-part academic title consisting of a “hook” and a “focus”)
I. INTRODUCTION(required: 1-4 are optional, but try to include at least one element)
1. (INTERESTING OPENING/HOOK to introduce the topic)
2. (RATIONALE for writing – why is it important to discuss this topic now?)
3. (BACKGROUND/CONTEXT of the topic, perhaps historical or an academic controversy about it)
4. (DEFINITION/S of any key terms on which the argument of the essay depends)
 DO NOT MAKE ARGUMENTS OR GIVE EXAMPLES YET – WAIT FOR THE BODY!
5. A clear and concise THESIS STATEMENT of your arguments A1, A2, A3 … An
II. MAIN BODY PARAGRAPHS (required: three or four well-developed body paragraphs in a 101 essay)
1. A TOPIC SENTENCE clearly stating YOUR argument
2. SUPPORT for your argument in the form of details, explanations, and/or examples. At least one of these
should refer to a course reading
3. A CONCLUDING SENTENCE linking the support to your argument and thesis / transitioning to the next
paragraph
III. CONCLUSION(required: 3-6 are optional, but try to include at least one element)
1. RESTATEMENT OF THESIS (in different words)
2. brief SUMMARY of your 3 (or more) main points
 DO NOT ADD NEW INFORMATION, EXAMPLES OR QUOTES!
