Step 1:
There are 39 ducks and goats
All together there are 110 legs.
Ducks have 2 feet and goats have 4 legs.
Both has one head.
We are trying to determine how many ducks and goats Mr. Jones has on
his farm.
Step 2:
Guess and check
Step 3:
If there are 20 ducks and 19 goats:
20 x 2 = 40 legs; 40 x 4 = 76 legs; 40 +76 = 116
The total number is more than 110
If there are 22 ducks and 17 goats:
22 x 2 = 44; 17 x 4 = 68; 44 + 68 = 112
The total number is still more than 110
If there are 23 ducks and 16 goats:
23 x 2 = 46; 16 x 4 = 64; 46+ 64 = 110
Therefore, the number of ducks is 23 and the number of goats is 16
Step 4:
Checking:
23 + 16 = 39 heads
46 + 64 = 110 legs
2. Amy went to Las Vegas to shop. She went to a store, spent half of her money and then
P500 more. She went to a second store, spent half of her money and then P500 more.
She then had no money left. How much money did she have to begin with when she
went to the first store?
Step 1:
Amy spent half of her total money then spent 500 more on the first store. She then went
to the second store and spent half of the remaining money and then 500 more. There’s
nothing left after she went to the 2 stores. We are trying to determine how much money
she had before she spent her money on the 2 stores.
Step 2:
“ Work backwards”
We start with an unknown amount, do some operations, and end up with a known
amount. We need to start with the result and apply the operations in reverse
Step 3:
Start with P0, add P500 then double it, add P500 and double it again.
[(0 + 500 x 2) + 500] x 2 = 3000
Amy had P3000 at the beginning.
Step 4:
Amy spent half of her money on the first store then spent another P500
P3000/2 = P1500
P1500 – P500 = P1000
She then spent half of her remaining money then another P500 again.
P1000/2 = P500
P500 – P500 = 0
3. Faye celebrated her birthday party at their house. It was attended by 30 of her close
friends and relatives. If each person shook hands with each of the others exactly once,
how many handshakes took place?
Step 1:
There are 30 attendees in the party. Each handshake means that a pair did it. If person
A shake hands with person B, then person B shakes hands with person A as well.
Step 2:
We can determine the total number of hand shakes by creating a model that
represents the number of handshakes that took place if a certain number of people
shook hands with each of the others exactly once. From there, we can observe patterns
and make a formula from it.
Step 3:
n(n−1)
The resulted formula based from the pattern will lead to the total number of
2
handshakes that took place place in a n group of persons.
Step 4:
30(30−1)
Therefore, there were a total of = 435 handshakes
