Karina Valencia completed her senior capstone project applying research skills she learned in the Health Science program. Through her health 309 research methods class, she learned to apply research findings to her work. Her capstone paper was based solely on statistics gathered through research methods. The program helped her better understand how research and evidence play an important role in the health field. She also learned how to use statistical programs like SPSS and incorporate reliable sources to support her research. Going forward, she wants to further her education by learning more about research programs and investigating the long term effects of e-cigarettes on human health.

Health Science Program Learning Outcome #5

Karina Valencia

HLTH 499: Senior Capstone Project

California State University, Channel Islands

Spring 2021
As a result of the Health Science Program Learning Outcomes I was able to apply

research skills in organizational and personal health settings, and in health education practice.

This is so as in my health 309 research methods in the health sciences class, I acquired this

ability to apply research into my findings. My artifact is a paper solely based on statistics

through research methods. Before I started the Health Science major my knowledge of this major

has changed as I now realize how much research and artifacts play into it. I now know so much

more and have benefited from it because it has prepared me to do my own research if I decide to.

Specifically, with this class it intrigued me on how many articles one can find backing up

information one is researching.

My academic ability has incredibly developed over the time in this program as this

artifact has allowed me to learn how to use statistical programs such as SPSS. This artifact has

also taught me to use reliable sources and plenty of them. This allows the reader to know what is

being stated is reliable because they can look back at where the writer got their information from.

Having statistical information is very important as it helps the reader also understand what the

writer is trying to bring up to light such as the number of people who drink every day, never, and

every so often. Not only has this artifact taught me that statistical information is important to

incorporate in research but that many discoveries can be found when properly using data. An

example of this would be when I gathered statistical data stating how many people are supportive

or unsupportive of capital punishment and concluded that 65.3 of 100 men and 56.4 of 100

females favored this.

Gaps in my knowledge that I would like to pursue if I further my education is learning

more about research programs like SPSS. Being able to learn more about programs like these

would help me if I decide to do my own research in this field to discover new findings. For
example, something that interests me to learn more and research about are how e-cigarettes or

vape-pens can affect the human body long-term. I would further my education by taking

information technology classes and maybe even get a bachelor’s degree in this major. Learning

more about this topic will allow for the community to understand what kind of harm inhaling the

chemicals within these products can do to one’s body. Having this knowledge can either help the

community in not buying these products or at least have them think twice about what they are

risking.

In conclusion, the Heath Science Program Learning Outcome of applying research skills

in organizational and personal health settings, and in health education practice was fulfilled for

me. This program has not only allowed me to learn to apply research methods into my work and

papers but has also taught me the importance of having valid statistics to prove a point. Statistics

allows whoever is reading your work to be able to see proof in one’s statements and believe what

is being said. Many statistics in the health setting has proven to have an impact in people health

decisions therefore statistics are very important to have when stating information.
