A Quantitative Research in the Level of Social Media Addiction among the young people of
the Philippines

Chapter 2: Review of Related Literature

This chapter presents the supporting literature and the ideas that we’ve conducted and
this aims to show the literature who supports in our topic in the existing phenomenon. These
related studies literature offered assessment and enrichment in the conduct of this research work
on social media addiction.

Related Literature

In this generation the technology is getting more dominant and social media is getting
bigger and bigger. We Filipinos love to use social media as our past time, way of relaxation and
communication. Most of the users are young people and they are the most common user
according to Gonzales Gelo(2019)”Filipinos are top in using of social media and the number of
users in the Philippines grown from 67million to 76million this year. And the 75million users are
using the platform Facebook.” This statement shows that Filipino are mostly using social media.
A year ago there were 3.19 billion of them use social media on mobile devices, growing by 10%
from the past years Filipino uses from 9hours and 29 minutes into 10 hours and 2 minutes in
2019 and the highest using minutes in the world. Gonzales Gelo(2019). And this respective data
the usage of social media in the Philippines is higher than last year and most of the users of
social media is young people. According to social media stats Philippines “young people mostly
uses Facebook garnering 92.2% and the second one is 4.05% which is twitter and follows by
Pinterest who has an average of 1.58% and it follows by YouTube garnering 1.5% and follows
by Instagram who garnered 0.4% and the last of the list is Tumblr were it averages for 0.15%.”
young people now a days making the social media as a part of their life’s where they can’t decide
or they can’t survive without social media and the most of them are really attached of it and can’t
control their self’s using social media. And we have two variables.
Young People of the Philippines

In our society the young people ages 15 to 24 years old as a bigger consumers of
information technology in the past few years, a survey on media use and youth life style showed.
Cruz (2014). And in this generation young people uses social media as their way of
communication and building of relationship into others. Cruz (2014). According to Cruz(2014)
that “six out of ten young people aged 15 to 24 years old are regular internet users and more than
half have social network and email accounts.”

Level of Social Media addiction

It started at the age of 13 nearly over many social media requires the users to be at least 13
years of age to access and use their services any type of social media websites. The most uses
websites this includes Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, Musical.ly, and Skype.

Average age of social media user

This statistis shows that some age distribution of active social media users worldwide, as of the
third quarter of 2014, it was sorted by platform. During the survey period, it has found that 34%
of users of Instagram were between the age of 25 to 34 years old. Simon Rete(2018). As of
January 2017 a survey of global users of Facebook shows that the biggest Facebook users group
were men between the ages of 18 to 24 years – this group accounts for 18 percent of total
facebook users worldwide. The second-largest group was men between the ages of 25 to 34 years
of age. In the United States. Harry Fallon(2019). Friends and colleagues, to stay up to Date with
Current News and Events, To spend spare time, To find Funny Content, To share Photos and
Videos, General Networking with Others, To search and buy products, and to share the opinions

Negative Outcomes of Social Media Addiction

Addiction on Socail media can be viewed thru form on Internet addiction, on individuals a
compulsion to social media to excess (Griffiths, 2000; Starcevic, 2013). Individuals on social
media are overly to concerned thru social media are driven by uncontrollable to log on and use to
social media (Andreassen & Pallesen, 2014). The statistics have shown some symptoms in social
media addiction thru personal mood, cognition, physical, emotional reactions, interpersonal and
psychological problems (Balakrishnan & Shamim, 2013; Błachnio, Przepiorka, Senol-Durak,
Durak, & Sherstyuk, 2017 Kuss & Griffiths, 2011; Tang, Chen, Yang, Chung, & Lee, 2016; the
statistics have been reported that social media addiction affects approximately 12% of users
across the networking sites (Alabi, 2012; Wolniczak et al., 2013; Wu, Cheung, Ku, & Hung,
2013

Performance Problems

A case study of social media addiction behavior, in line with this there is a recent study of 10,018
employess that concluded the use of social network site are for personal purposes during working
hours on work performance. Studies ha also examined the relationship between academic may
effect the use of social media. These studies had report lower grade and poorer performance.
Advantage of using Social Media

There are 4 kind of advantage of using social media. Increased brand awareness. Social media is
one of the most used digital marketing methods used to syndicate content to increase your
business visibility [1]. More inbound traffic. Without marketing your business on social media,
the inbound traffic is only limited to your usual customers. The people familiar with your brand
are likely searching for the same keywords you already use or rank for [2]. Improved Search
Engine Rankings. Although posting on social media might get your business some site traffic,
more effort than that is required to significant success [3]. Higher Conversion Rates. With
increased with increased your business gains more opportunities for conversion. Every post, image,
video, or comment may lead viewers to your company's website and increase traffic [4].

Disadvantage of using Social Media

According to psychology today there a 4 disadvantage of using social media. You Can Receive
Negative Feedback. People use social media to post content, but they also use it to share
experiences they didn’t love. Some had a poor experience with your business [1]. You open up
the potential. Easy for post to go viral on social media. People keep good and bad on social
media [2]. You Must Spend a Lot of Time on your Campaigns. You must constantly create new
content, post content, and engage with your audience on the platform [3]. You have to wait to see
results. When companies invest thru marketing strategies, with social marketing you don’t see
immediate results.
