Many Filipino families choose to raise animals as a source of income. To the

right people, it can prove financially rewarding if done in the right way. The animals/

fish raising industry can lead to different entrepreneurial endeavor ranging from the

sale of live animals and fishes to the production of by-products including meat.

A person’s decision to go into animal raising business can be affected by a wide

variety of factors including but not limited to the following: personal interest, family

background, educational background, environment and available resources.

 There are people who became famous and rich because of this very profitable

kind of business. Some of them are:

A. Monterey Foods Corporation- producing good quality meat products and the largest
hog breeding, hog growing and cattle fattening operation in the Philippines

B. Mrs. Normita Balboa- A swine raiser from Bataan who was selected by the
Department of Agriculture as farmer cooperator for swine breeding project.

C. Padilla Farm- Congressman Carlos Padilla Jr. of Nueva Vizcaya from Dupax, Norte
who engaged in raising nature pigs and imported goats

D. Crisologo “Ising” Aquino - A farmer of barangay Bibiclat, Aliaga, Nueva Ecija who
raised Mestiza buffalo for milk production.

E. Marlyn Lilgan- An agricultural livestock technician and goat raiser from Balungao,
Pangasinan.

F. A & L Fish farm and Hatchery- The Tycangcos have mastered the production of
Kingfish or red tilapia and they stock their fingerlings when they are six weeks old
from hatching (size 14) to ensure high survival.

CONDUCTING A SURVEY

Survey is an important and effective tool in collecting data .When you conduct

your own survey, take your time and get as much information as possible. A survey

should supply you with the vital information before you finally begin farming. Whether

it is small scale (backyard) farming or large-scale farming that you have in mind, it is

best to know when and how to start off.

 The need to conduct a survey about persons venturing in animal/fish raising

industry in their locality and the important information, one need to find out before

embarking on the animal raising business. Some says that experience is the best

teacher. Learn from other people’s previous experiences. Think of ways on how to do

business deals better.

approach which can create trust and cooperation from respondents.

 Kinds of Four-Legged Animals/Fish

Being Raised as Means of Livelihood

Filipinos raise animals in order to improve the quality of their lives. Many

families today, especially in the provinces, engage in four-legged animal/fish raising

to have a secured supply of food, support their daily needs, and have an additional

income. Just like having a vegetable garden in the backyard, raising four-legged

animals/fish prove financially rewarding if done in the right way.

Here are some four-legged animals and fish ideal to raise in the Philippines:

Swine/Hog- Swine/hog or pig raising is a very

profitable business since then. Majority of our

population are meat lovers. Pork is their favorite dish.

Some of the breeds that are commonly raised in the

Philippines are Philippine Native, Duroc, Hampshire,

Poland China, Yorkshire and others.

Goat- The goat’s meat is a very nutritious food. It can

be compared to cow or carabao’s meat. It is also

considered as one of the Filipino dishes during family

gatherings, fiestas and other celebrations.

Goat’s milk has some special qualities that differ

from other animals’ milk. It is a special milk for infants

as well as for sick person that cannot be fed with any other kind of milk. It has low fat

but high in lactose content so is easy to digest. Some of the breeds that are commonly

raised in the Philippines are Dadiangas goat which originated in General Santos City,

Anglo Nubian, Toggenburg, Saanen, French Alpine and Boer.

Cattle- Cattle has been an important domestic animal

to mankind. It has been the source of meat, leather,

glue, milk, butter, cheese, medicines and hair used for

binding plasters. It also serve as farm animal and help

people in cultivating their land for planting. Cattle is the

best of all livestock animals to be raised because

everything in cattle has uses and purpose. Some of the breeds that are commonly

raised in the Philippines are Philippine Native cattle, Brahman, Angus, Nellore,

Batangas, Ilocos, Brangus, Brahford and many more.

Carabao- Carabao is our national animal and

considered as the farmer’s close partner in his farming

activities. It is commonly raised livestock specie in the

Philippines and Region VII in particular. Generally

considered as a backyard activity among farmers, this

domesticated animal has gained remarkable importance in the past years as a vital

component in food sustainability and income to farmers. Some of the breeds that is

commonly raised in the Philippines are Philippine Carabao, Thai Buffalo, Indian

Buffalo, Murah and Sorti.

Bangus (Milkfish) – Bangus is our national fish and

rated as first class fish in Metro Manila. It is one of the

favorite fish because of its tender flesh and tasty belly.

In the Philippines, bangus can be raised anywhere.

However, the top bangus producing provinces are

Bulacan, Pangasinan, Capiz, Iloilo, and Negros

Occidental. The most recent report released by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics

(BAS) show that the combined production of these five provinces alone accounts for

more than 50 percent of the country’s total production.

Tilapia- Tilapia is originated in Africa and later

introduced in the Philippines.The most cultured fish next

to bangus is tilapia. There are many species of tilapia

available in our country today like blackchin tilapia, nile

tilapia, blue tilapia and red belly tilapia. These different

species of tilapia are easily grown and adaptable in

brackish water and fresh water. They easily mature and breed frequently. They can

reach marketable size within 4 months with proper management.

Hito (Catfish) -Philippines has the warm tropical climate

ideal for catfish farming. It is served as a popular meal in

the Filipino cuisine as Hito Tamarind stew, grilled catfish,

etc. Catfish farming can become a profitable business

when right conditions are met. They are sold in wet

market along with other fishpond fish like milkfish and tilapia. It can be raised in ponds

as well as in inland tanks or channels that are designed to retain water for this aquatic

creature.

 The primary purpose of raising four-legged animals and fish is for food

production and it is a profitable business for the family. Some of the common four-

legged animals being raised in the country are swine/hog/pig, goat, and cattle. While

the common fish cultured are bangus, tilapia and catfish (hito).

 Possible Hazard that Animal Raising
Can Cause to the People and Community

Farmers and animal raisers are exposed to numerous hazards daily. Serious

injuries may be prevented if appropriate protective equipment is used. A safe

workplace prevents illness and injury not only to the farmer but to the animals as well.

They are also at risk of developing injury illness from their work. It is very

important to follow safety rules by using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Avoid

entering waste storage pits without wearing self-contained breathing apparatus. It is

advised to practice good personal hygiene to avoid any problems.

Here are some hazards that need important attention to prevent serious and

fatal injuries:

Physical Injuries - Animals that are stressed,

uncomfortable and unfamiliar with humans, tend to be

wild. They may end up kicking, biting, rushing, and

trampling people including their handlers.

Air Pollution – Chemical pesticides and animal waste

that is not properly disposed and left exposed in the

backyard can produce a very unpleasant smell

causing air pollution that is harmful to human.

Likewise, the animal waste can attract flies and insects

which can be carriers of disease-causing bacteria and

other microorganisms.

Noise Pollution - Exposure of animal raisers and

farmers to loud noises from both animals and

equipment in the farm might induce hearing damage

to farm workers.

Infectious Diseases - Several infectious diseases

that may be transmitted to humans are ascariasis,

animal influenza, scabies, ringworm, salmonellosis,

and other animal diseases.

Insect and Pest Infestation - If not controlled, flies and

other insects can multiply fast and spread out in the

community. This will cause disturbances, stress, and

diseases. Likewise, sick animals, if not properly

treated, can pose danger to the health of the people.

Danger of Slipping the Needle - While vaccinating,

giving medications, drawing blood from animals and

even recapping a used needle is dangerous when

the animal is moving.

Possible Workplace Accidents- These are untoward

incidents that may exist because of carelessness,

disarrayed workplace, wet floor, damaged or not

well-maintained electrical and other equipment.

 Possible Ways to Prevent Farm Hazard

Brought About by Animal Raising

There are many ways to reduce the risk of farm injuries and illnesses in the farm by

evaluating the risks and minimizing them. Accidents can be prevented through better

education among farmers and workers, making sure equipment is well maintained and

has adequate safety features, having safety procedures in place, and training every

worker and family member about potential dangers.

Preventing Animal Hazards

Proper Handling and Disposal of Animal Waste -

Avoid direct contact with animal feces. Use gloves

and other tools such as rake and shovel when

handling and disposing animal waste.

Avoid or Refrain from Inhaling Animal Fur –

Microorganism can get caught on fur and

possibly be transmitted to humans through our

noses. Do not inhale animal fur.

Observe Proper Distancing from Animals - Do not get

too close with any of the animals. Unfamiliar

people or other animals may cause stress. Proper

space/ distance is advised.

Proper Handling of Animals- Practice proper

animal handling. This help maintain production

quality and effectively reduces stress on cattle and

people.

Maintain Orderliness and Cleanliness in the

Workplace- This is to ensure that both animals and

workers are free from diseases and accidents that

will ensure productive and financial profitability.

Animal/Fish Products and By-products

The Philippines’ livestock and fishery production expanded rapidly during the past

decade because of increasing demand for quality and safe food products. While outputs

of carabeef, beef, chevon and fishery products rose steadily.

Figure 1 shows the volume of livestock in our country. We can notice that the

production of cattle, hog and goat continuously increasing from year 2000 up to 2012.

 Livestock production is a major component of the agricultural economy of the

Philippines and its economic contribution goes well beyond direct food production. Sales

of livestock and their products provide direct cash income to farmers. Livestock are

considered a walking bank for many farmers and have a critical role in the agricultural

strengthening process.

Pork remains a popular livestock commodity recognized as Filipinos’ most

preferred animal meat product. Over the past decade, pork has consistently represented

more than 55 percent of the total daily animal meat consumption of Filipinos. According

to the 2006 Census of Philippine Business and Industry (January 2009 Preliminary Data

Release), pig farming is the second largest commercial agri-food industry in the

Philippines, after the banana industry.

Figure 2 shows that there is a decrease in the production of fresh water

aquaculture starting year 2007 up to 2012.

Filipino, accounting for around 41 percent of animal protein intake. But despite a

high demand for fish products in the Philippines, and extensive aquatic resources, fish is

becoming increasingly unaffordable for the country’s poor due to decreasing stocks and

increased costs of production. The fishing industry in the Philippines is also vulnerable to

the effects of climate change – rising sea levels, increasing water temperatures and

changing water.

There are two materials we can get from the body of a four-legged animal/fish.

They are called products and by-products. Products refers to the materials from the body

of the four-legged animals/fish that have not undergone any process like fat, meat, skin,

organs, bloods, milk, eggs, hair bones and hooves. By-products are materials derived

from a production process, manufacturing process or chemical reaction like soap, can

goods, crayons, omega fish oil, string instruments and many more. The food industry is

only one of the business sectors that use four-legged animal/fish products. Because of

their low cost and versatility, manufacturers incorporate these ingredients in everything

from soap and sausage to cosmetics and the like.
