Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering University of Dhaka

The document is a submission by Nabuat Aiman Nadim to his lecturer Dr. Shugata Ahmed at the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Dhaka. It addresses two questions - the differences between robotics and mechatronics engineering, and why autonomous vehicles are considered mechatronics systems. For the first question, it outlines the key differences between robotics which focuses on robot design and operation, and mechatronics which is a broader field involving interactions between mechanical, electrical and control systems. For the second question, it explains that autonomous vehicles integrate mechanical, electrical, electromechanical and intelligent control systems, qualifying them as complex mechatronics systems.

1.WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ROBOTICS AND MECHATRONICS ENGINEERING?

Answer:
Robotics Mechatronics Engineering
1. Merriam Webster defines robotics as 1. Mechatronics is a superset of robotic
technology dealing with the design, technologies. The discipline is a study of
construction and operation of robots in interactions between mechanical
automation, systems, electrical systems and control
theory.
2. A robot is a device that automatically 2. It covers a diverse field of electro-
performs complicated and often repetitive mechanical systems, from simple on/off
tasks. controls to sophisticated robotic systems.
3. Robotics is a subfield of mechatronics, 3. Mechatronics also include things that
are not entirely robotic in nature.
4. Robotic systems are re-programmable. 4. By definition fully autonomous
vehicles, BASs and smart factories may
seem like robotic systems, but they are
better described as complex
mechatronics.
5. Fully autonomous vehicles are another 5. Robotic technologies include Universal
example of the advanced mechatronics. Robots collaborative robots and Otto
Motors self-driving vehicles.

2.WHY ARE AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

MECHATRONICS SYSTEMS?

Answer: A system that involve mechanical engineering, electronics, control

and automation in order to produce a design solution that puts each of
these various fields into operation in a unified manner. An autonomous
vehicle have the capability to operate itself by sensing the environment
without a human driver. It utilizes a fully automated driving system in order
to respond to the environment a human would manage.
Vehicles are already mechanical system as they use various mechanical
components like gears, stirrings by wheels.Automated vehicles use complex
circuits to power supply to various mechanical components such as
sensors. These vehicles use enclosed systems to do intelligent tasks like
identifying objects and use the optimal way to reverse.those enclosed
systems use microcontroller and microprocessors to do the intelligent
computational tasks
An autonomous vehicles have electrical,mechanical,electromechanical
components as well as an intelligent system, which are related to computer
science ,these are mechatronics system
