CE 3113 - Transportation Engineering Spring 2021 HW #1

The document outlines 6 homework problems for a transportation engineering course. The problems cover topics like calculating minimum stopping sight distance, required passing sight distance, decision sight distance, intersection sight distance, coefficient of friction for curves, and checking sight distance for a curved highway section with trees.

CE 3113 –Transportation Engineering

Spring 2021

HW #1

1. (4 pts) Calculate the minimum stopping sight distance on a -2.5% grade for a design speed of
60 km/h.

2. (4 pts) Determine the required passing sight distance on a two-lane two-way highway with a
design speed of 40 mph.

3. (4 pts) Calculate the decision sight distance needed for a driver to make a
speed/path/direction change on a suburban road with a design speed of 80 km/h.

4. (4 pts) Calculate the required intersection sight distance where a major road (design speed =
55 mph) intersects with a minor road. Assume it takes 13.0 s for a vehicle to maneuver
through the intersection.

5. (16 pts) Calculate the coefficient of friction for a curve with a design speed of 65 mph, a
radius of 1200 ft, and a maximum allowable superelevation rate of 6%. Based on Table 2.12,
what can you state about this f? What would be the maximum allowable coefficient of
friction if the curve has the minimum radius from the table? Using a superelevation of 6%
and a coefficient of friction of 0.08, what would be the minimum radius required for the
curve?

6. (8 pts) A cluster of trees is 25 ft from the centerline on a curved portion of a two-lane

highway with 12 ft lanes. The radius of the curve along the highway centerline is 800 ft. Is
the radius of the horizontal curve sufficient to provide adequate stopping sight distance?
Assume the design speed on the roadway is 55 mph. What HSO would be needed to provide
adequate stopping sight distance?
