Three (3) Things That I Significantly Learned From The Readings

The document summarizes a student's reading report on a course about science, technology, and society. In 3 sentences: The student learned that WikiLeaks aims to reveal government and corporate wrongdoings, leaks can achieve reform without war, and journalism requires bravery given the risks of exposing information. However, the student still has unclear how WikiLeaks verifies information and ensures whistleblower safety. The student also questions how WikiLeaks establishes trust in sources and deals with potentially misleading information, and how it can maintain independence from governments.

1. Three (3) Things that I significantly learned from the readings

• WikiLeaks does not simply provide information to its audience, but it unravels the
truth behind the injustices, corruption, manipulation of power, etc. of government
and its officials.
• Leaking of secret information can achieve a reform and it does not always impose
war or fight. WikiLeaks is a channel that informs people and society about the
issues and truth about the companies and government.
• Journalism is not an easy job. It requires bravery and strength to face the possible
unintended consequences of your action. A clip was shown in the video where in
Kenya, a number of people died due to the exposure of a document. It implies that
the impact of leaking information to the media can be a trigger for your target to
despise you.

2. Three (3) Things that are still unclear to me

• The safety assurance of the people working for WikiLeaks.
• How did WikiLeaks compensate for the lives that were sacrificed on the Kenya
incident?
• The way how WikiLeaks verifies the information that they receive from various
sources was not clearly elaborated.

3. I used to think that….

• Wikipedia is known as a source of information which is not completely reliable. By
hearing the term “Wiki”, I assumed that Wikipedia and WikiLeaks are related and
that concludes that the information of WikiLeaks provide may not be that legitimate
as well.
• The safety of the community is the priority of the government. Laws were made to
establish a good governance over a country.
• Media unravels the truth.

4. Three (3) questions that I want to ask about the readings

• How does WikiLeaks manage to trust the whistleblowers? How certain are they
about the information they receive if they don’t know entirely the identity of their
source?
• What if the information that WikiLeaks reveals are the twisted ones? Change is
constant, and money is too powerful.
• How can WikiLeaks establish a good relationship with the government if it entitles
to hold the power? The power of truth? That people may not believe to what the
government says and depends on WikiLeaks instead.
