1. A rectangular timber beam 150 mm by 250 mm simply supported on a 3 m span carries a uniformly distributed load
of 8 kN/m and a concentrated load P acting at 1 m from the left support. Calculate the value of P if the allowable
flexural stress is not to exceed 10 MPa. If the allowable shearing stress will not exceed 1.20 MPa determine the value
of P. Determine the value of P if it is placed at the mid span which will not exceed the allowable deflection of 1/360 of
the span using E = 80,000 MPa
2. A rectangular timber beam 120 mm by 400 mm simply supported on a 5 m span is loaded as shown. Calculate the
value of P if the allowable flexural stress is not to exceed 10 MPa. Determine the value of the bending moment at
the point of application of P. What is the maximum shearing stress of the beam?
3. A timber beam has a circular cross-section of diameter = 250 mm and a simple span of 4 m. The strength of a circular
beam is equal to a square beam of the same cross-sectional area. If the allowable values of bending stress, shearing
stress, and deflection are equal to 16.50 MPa, 1.73 MPa, and 1/240 of span respectively, determine the maximum
uniform load to satisfy the limitations. Use modulus of elasticity of timber = 7.31 GPa.
4. A simply supported beam L meters long carries a uniformly distributed load of 16 kN/m over its entire length and
has the cross section shown. Calculate its section modulus, the length to cause a maximum flexural stress of 40 MPa
and the maximum shearing stress developed.
5. A beam 10 m long and supported as shown carries a uniformly distributed load of W kN/m (including its own
weight). Allowable flexural stresses for tension and compression are 30 MPa and 80 MPa respectively. Calculate the
value of “x” to give maximum W. How much is W? What is the maximum shear?
6. A cast iron beam carries the given loads as shown. Determine the permissible limit of overhang so as not to exceed
the allowable tensile stress of 20 MPa. What is the permissible limit of overhang so as not to exceed the allowable
compressive stress of 80 MPa? Which of the two conditions above gives the permissible overhang?
7. A laminated beam is composed of three planks, each 150 mm x 60 mm glued together to form a section 150 mm
wide x 180 mm deep. The beam spans 2 m, and the stresses are; 600 kPa for glue, 900 kPa for shear and 8 MPa for
flexure. Determine the uniform load if the stress of glue is not to be exceeded, if the shear stress is not to be
exceeded and if the allowable flexural stress is not to be exceeded.
8. A thin walled cylinder shell having a lateral diameter of 2 m is fabricated from plate 200 mm thick. If the tensile
strength of the plate is 400 MPa, what is the safe pressure that it could confine? What is the ratio of the hoop stress
to the longitudinal stress? What is the required wall thickness if the ends of the tank is closed with hemispherical
subjected to an internal pressure of 2.0 MPa?
9. From the figure shown, what is the moment of inertia with respect to the u-axis?, with respect to the v-axis? What is
the product of inertia with respect to the u and v axes?
10. A truck is moving along a 20 m span of beam. The front axle is 8 kN, the middle is 16 kN and the rear is 16 kN. The
middle load is 3 m from the front and 6 m from the rear. What is the maximum moment produced by the loads?
Determine the distance of the 8 kN load from the mid span to obtain maximum moment at the beam. What is the
maximum shear developed in the beam?
