3.3 Feeding Plate

Feeding plate is an important component of the analyzer. Keeping the feeding plate in good
condition is crucial to accurate testing. Please keep the feeding plate clean to avoid
contamination. Avoid accumulating urine on the plate, which may cause resistance to the
transferring of the stripes. Feeding plate must be installed correctly or the error “Plate Position
Error” would show on screen.

Please be careful when installing the plate. First insert the longer side (shown in figure 5.10) into
the channel. Then insert the short side in to the channel and carefully slide the plate inwards until
it reaches the end. Please do not apply force downwards when sliding the plate, otherwise the
plate would bent in the middle and cannot be held by the screws. Shown in figure 5.11, one of
the screws is not in position so the stripe may not be fed to the correct scanning position.

Plate Wall
Longer side
Tendons on plate

Figure 5.10
Feeding plate should be washed with clear water daily. Especially, the nine tendons on the plate
need to be cleaned to keep accumulated sample from affecting the feeding of strips.

Common problems:
Incorrectly installed plate: if the error indicates plate in not installed correctly, pushing it farther
into position.

Erba Lachema s.r.o.
Standard operation procedure 294-1 Date of validity: 14.02.2012
Service manual LAURA M

Occasionally, the error message is not shown but the one slot in the middle has no screw slide in
(Figure 5.11). In this case, it is impossible to carry the stripes to position (the position of stripe
carrier relative to the plate is shown in figure 5.12). The solution is simply pull out the plate out
then slide in again. Be careful not to press the handle down to avoid the other end tilting up.

Figure 5.11

Figure 5.12
Another common malfunction is caused by dirty plate, which keeps stripes from being carried
freely to position. Wrong position of the stripe is illustrated in figure 5.13. This would cause
incorrect readings and error message “stripe error”. The solution is to wash and clean the feeding
plate especially the wall and tendons.

3.4 Waste Stripe Box

Waste strip box is used to collect used stripes after tests. Normally it can store up to 200 stripes,
which matches the daily usage of most users. The capacity may vary due to random ways of
piling up the waste stripes. To avoid contamination and humidity, it is recommended to clear the
waste box daily.

Figure 5.14
The full status of the waster box is monitored by infrared transmitter and receiver, as shown in
figure 3.14. When the transmission is blocked, he operator will be told that the waste box is full.
Humid and waste stripe can pollute the infrared transmitter and receiver, which may causes false
alarm. When false alarm happens, pull out the waste box and clean the transmitter and receiver
with ethanol cotton ball (figure 5.15). The receiver is polluted more often.

Infrared Receiver
transmitter

Figure 5.15
An inching switch checks the position of the waste box (figure 5.15). The switch is accessible by
hand. Normally the lifetime of inching switch meets the needs. If error “Waste box missing”
shows up, push the waste box farther to position. If the error remains, pull out the waste box and
test the inching switch by hand or tools to see whether the switch is functional. If the switch is
functional (error can be eliminated with hand or tools), the switch might be loosen. Simply adjust
the switch to make sure the waste box firmly touches the switch to solve the problem. If the error
cannot be eliminated by press the switch by hand or tools, open the top shell and use a multi-
meter to test whether the two wired terminals of the switch are connected. If the terminals are
connected, unstable connection or other parts might cause the error. If the terminals are not
connected, the inching switch needs to be replaced.

Erba Lachema s.r.o.
Standard operation procedure 294-1 Date of validity: 14.02.2012
Service manual LAURA M
If there is no spear inching switch, this fix can be implemented later. User can bypass the error
by set the switch off through software. Then the waste box error would not show up. In this case,
user have to take care of the waste box to make sure it is installed in position and clear the box
frequently to avoid too many waste stripes to affect the work of the equipment.

3.5 Open the Top Shell

The analyzer has two major parts: top part and bottom part. The two parts are bolted with seven
M3X12 screws and one M3X8 screw (figure 5.16). The largest circle indicates the M3X8 screw.
The rest are M3X12 screws.
Clean working surface and lay soft material on the surface
Unplug power and cables from analyzer and place it upside down on the soft surface
Unscrew the eight screws with a magnetic Phillips screwdriver and keep the screws
carefully
Hold the top and bottom part and turn the analyzer back to regular position
Hold only the top shell and carefully open the top shell to back
Stand the top shell at the backside of the bottom part. Be careful with the 2-core 5V power
cord and the 4-core data transmission cable connecting the two boards

4.1 User Threshold Adjustments

Threshold adjustment enables users to adjust the sensitivity of all testing items.
Turn on the analyzer and watch the progress bar under the logo. When the progress bar is almost
full, press the 10mm x 10mm area on the upper left corner of LCD. The backdoor window would
pop up asking for password:

Enter the 6-digit password “011119” with number keyboard, then press “ √ ” to access
threshold adjustment backdoor.

Press items need to be adjusted. Here we use BLD as an example:

This window lists all the arbitrary system of the item and the threshold value between each two
thresholds. Note most of the threshold table is decrement, while some items are increment, such
as SG and GLU.

Choose threshold to be changed and enter the new threshold with the small keyboard. Then press
“√” to enter.

Press “save” to save all threshold settings to the Flash ROM. These settings are not lost after
power off. After restart, all displaying, printing, and transferring of the new reports and saved
reports are produced with the new thresholds.

There is also a “load default” option. Press “load default” to restore threshold settings which are
set by manufacturer.

Note this is a risky operation. Once pressing “Yes”, all default threshold settings are
restored. However, the default thresholds may not be suitable for the present use. Only use
default settings when necessary!

5 Maintenance

5.1 Daily Maintenance and Cautions

Do not place the analyzer under direct sunlight, which may affect testing accuracy.
Often use dry soft cloth to clean the analyzer. If the surface is dirty, use a little water to wipe the
analyzer. Do no use any gasoline, paint dilution, benzene compounds, ethanol, or any other
organic solvents to clean the analyzer. These chemicals may cause deformation, peel off paint,
affect normal operation, or appearance.
Do not clean the LCD with water. Only use dry soft cloth to clean the LCD.
Considering the physical property of the stripes, please avoid using it under high or low
temperature to ensure the accurate testing results. (Ideal working temperature is 10 – 30 °C).
5.1.1 Feeding Plate
The most critical maintenance is to keep the plate from deformation and clean. Please see the
section about feeding plate.
5.1.2 Carrier Belt
Plastic carriers are in contact with urine samples during testing. Sample may accumulate on the
plate thus create resistance to strips and produce unpleasant smell and looks. In this case, pull out
the plate and clean it with soft brush and water or basic cleaner of low concentration.

5.2 Sterilization
1. Use one of the three formulas to make disinfectant:
2% Glutaral Solution Cidex. This is a consumer product sold in market. Refer to the tag for
usage.
Or 0.05% sodium hypochlorite solution: add 1ml of sodium hypochlorite solution (or Clorox
Bleach) to 99 ml water to make 1:100 dilution
 Or isopropyl alcohol (70% - 80%)
2. Pour disinfectant into a container. Submerge the waste strip box and feeding plate into the
disinfectant. Do the same for liquid plate is necessary.

3. Soak for 10 minutes, take out, and dry with paper towel.

5.3 Periodic Cleaning

If the feeding plate and waste box is rather dirty, following these steps to clean:
1. Take out the feeding plate and waste box
2. Use Cotton Tipped Applicators or other material to dip in 0.1N NaOH solution, clean the
channels of feeding plate and waste box.
3. Use distilled water to rinse the feeding plate and waste box.
4. Dry the feeding plate and waste box with water absorbent material. Make sure to clean and
dry the channels.
5. Reinstall the feeding plate and waste box.

6 Error Messages and Solutions

6.1 Error Code Table

Error messages are displayed when the analyzer has malfunctions or is operated
incorrectly. Errors may problems to some or all functions. Information about error
messages are as follows:

Error Message Table

Error Code Error Description Problem and Solution
E01 System software Error System memory error. System software missing
causing the analyzer cannot operate. Try to upgrade
the software. If upgrade fails, consider replace
bottom main board or contact manufacturer.
E02 System Data Error Stored system check and calibration data is lost. The
analyzer cannot operate. Please contact manufacturer
for fixing.
E03 Threshold Data An error has occurred on system data related to
Error strips. Please contact manufacturer for fixing.
E10 Carrier Sensor Error Feeding belt is functional but the carrier sensor
cannot detect the carriers. Take the feeding plate out
to see whether the carrier sensor is loosen or any
wire is disconnected. Also check the position of
sensor relative to the carriers. Then use objects to
block the sensor to see if that can be detected. If all
these tests cannot fix the problem, please contact
manufacturer for fixing.
E11 Feeding Belt Error Feeding belt does not feed correctly and the carrier
sensor detects abnormal movements. This is often
caused by increased carrier movement period – carry
speed slows down or inconsistent. Listen to the
carrying movement to see whether these are any
abnormal sound and observe for periodic resistance
occurrence. Also check for pollution to the stripe
feeding system. If all the steps cannot solve the
problem, please contact manufacturer for fixing.
E12 Stripe Sensor Error The movement and position of the stripe is normal.
However the stripe confirmation sensor cannot detect
the stripe. Open the top shell to check the position
and connection of the stripe confirmation sensor.
Take a stripe and move it across the sensor at the
same time as the stripe on the feeding plate, but
closer to the sensor. If the sensor is respond to this
stripe, the sensitivity of the sensor is low. Try lower
the sensor temporarily. If these are still no respond,
please contact manufacturer for fixing.

Error Code Error Description Problem and Solution
E21 Starting Position Error Open the top shell to check the position and
connection of the starting position sensor. If no
problem found, turn on the analyzer and observe the
movement of the scanner head. The scanner head
should stop once the light-block pass the coupler. If
it does not stop, the sensor may be failed. To test the
sensor, use a larger piece of object to block the
sensor, start the analyzer. If the motor stops once the
sensor is blocked, the problem would be the position
of the light-block. Adjust the position of the light-
block and do tests again. If other objects cannot
block the sensor to stop the motor, the sensor may
need to be replaced. Please contact manufacturer for
fixing.
E22 Scanner Head Motion Open the top shell, start the analyzer to observe the
Error motion of the scanner head. If the starting position is
detected correctly but the movement of the scanner
head is abnormal, listen carefully for any noise.
Loosen the screws on scanner head that holds the
synchronization belt, move the scanner head back
and forth with hand to feel any resistance. If there is
resistance, apply some lubricating oil and move it
with hand again until the movement is consistent and
smooth. Then fasten the screws and observe again, if
this fix the problem, the problem was the motor had
insufficient power to overcome the resistance. If the
above step does not fix the problem, the motor or
driver might be broken. Please contact manufacturer
for fixing.
E23 Brightness Error Open the top shell and check whether the white
reference chip is loosen or contaminated. If it is
loosen, apply appropriate adhesive to fasten the chip.
If it is contaminated, use water to clean it. If it looks
normal, power on and observe whether there is bright
light laminating the chip in a very short time.
Possible problems: the light source is outdated, the
light source is not well connected, or the receiver
(RGB receiver) is not receiving correctly.
Check the connection of cables and circuits. If the
problem cannot be fixed, contact manufacturer for
fixing.
E24 Background Light Error First, eliminate the possibilities that the top shell of
the analyzer lid broken or there is bright light source
nearby. If not, open the top shell, power on and
observe whether there is bright light laminating the
chip. If there is the bright light on the chip in a very
short time, contact manufacturer for fixing.
