Introduction
With the recent evolution and progress in technology, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have achieved a
great importance with the time. Many applications focus primarily on the throughput and less on the delay
and only very few applications demand high speed data transfer that includes minimum iterruptions. Each
sensor noded does communicate with every other node within its own range of the radio communication.
Outline:
In this report, A quick introduction of routing protocols and various types will be discussed in details and
SPIN, Directed Diffusion (DD) – which are most widely used are also covered including its advantageous and
their realt-time limitations.
1
Motivation:
At the end stage, a performance analysis of various routing protocols is based on using a WLAN & WSN.
The knowledge of routing protocol & network structure is considered crucial and should be an appropriate
and the correct one for the requirement of usage.
Routing Protocol
For the transmission of data from its source to destination, a suitabale path has to be selected and that
process is called Routing Protocol. Based on the type of network and Perfromance metrics, the process
could encounter several challenges for selecting the correct route.
Based on how the information get disseminated via network and also how the nodes communicate among
each other, the routing protocols of WSN can be classified into 4 types:
The main usage of this protocol is to remove the deficiency such as flooding & Gossiping which usually
occurs in various other protocols. There communication approaches are mainly used for sending message
formats namely ADV, REQ and DATA.
The main advantage of flooding is it has an ease of implementation and simplicity in design
2
The goccip version is an extension of flooding protocol which gets the data packet that transmits to
selected neighbor.
A main disadvtange of having these WSN nodes is that they require higher power and is not a
recommendable approach for energy conservation.
Directed Diffusion
Directed Diffusion classifies itself under Data-Centric routing technique and its usage is for gathering and
circulating information. This protocol is energy efficient unlike other protocols and this energy saves icrease
the life expectancy of the network. There is no need for addressing in this protocol as all the
communication is Direct Node-to-Node.
This protocol is highly recommended for having requirements primarily on Energy consumption
and savings.
Addressing is not mandatory in this protocol and is a Direct centric routing technique
Not a reasonale choice for Environmental Monitoring as it requires contonous data delivery.
Conclusion:
Based on the different types of Protocols used and post having an in-detail discussion on the Different
types of routing techniques used, it could be concluded that the Routing in sensor networks is still a new
area to explore for research with currently limited but has a potential rapid growth. There are still
challenges that are to be solved in the sensor networks when it comes to these routing protocols that have
been proposed and has high changes to rectify and overcome these challenges in the near future.
