Q3)
Sol. (C)
Q4) Two weak monobasic organic acids HA and HB have dissociation
constants as 1.5  10–5 and 1.8  10–5 respectively at 25°C. If 500 ml of 1
M solutions of each of these two acids are mixed to produce 1 litre of
mixed solution, what is the pH of the resulting solution?
Sol. (2.4)
Note that Ka of two acids is nearly same. In such cases, we have to consider H+ from both HA
& HB simultaneously. The concentration of HA & HB in the mixture = 0.5 M [equal volumes
are mixed ] = say ‘c’
HA  H+ + A–
HB  H+ + B–
Let x = [H+] from HA and Y = [H+] from HB
 [H+]final = x + y
KHA = & KHB =
 6x = 5y
Substitute for y = x in KHA =
 1.5  10–5 =
x = 1.84  10–3; y = 2.21  10–3
[H+] = x + y = 4.055  10–3
pH = – log10 (4.055  10–3)  pH = 2.4
Q5) Calculate the pH of a solution containing 10-4 M HCN (Ka = 10-10)
Sol. (6.85)
Q6) 12.5 mL solution of 0.5 M H3XO4 is titrated with 0.5 M NaOH. Calculate
pH at the following stages.
a) When 1st step neutralization is complete
b) When 2nd step neutralization is complete
c) When 3rd step neutralization is complete
K1, K2 and K3 for H3XO4 are 1  10–4, 2.0  10–7 and 4.0  10–11
respectively.
Sol. (5.35, 8.55, 11.5)
Q7) The ionisation constant of NH4+ ion in water 5.6  10–10 at 25C. The rate
constant for the reaction of NH4+ + OH– to form NH3 and H2O at 25C is
3.4  1010 lit/mol sec. Calculate the rate constant for proton transfer from
water to NH3
Sol.
Q8) Determine the mass of NH4Cl and volume of 1.0 M NaOH required for
preparing a 250 ml buffer solution of pH=9.5 with concentration of NH4+
in solution to be 0.1 M (Given: Kb of NH4OH = 2×10-5)
Ans – (Approx. 3.5 g and 40 ml)
Q9) Calculate the amount of NH3 and NH4Cl required to prepare a buffer
solution of pH 9.0, when total concentration of buffering reagents is 0.6
mol L–1. What will be the effect of adding 2g NaOH in 500 mL of this
buffer, on pH? (Given: pKb for NH3 = 4.7)
Q10) An aqueous solution of metal bromide MBr2 (0.05M) in saturated with
H2S. What is the minimum pH at which MS will ppt.?
Ksp =(MS) = 6  10–21
Concentration of standard H2S = .1
Ka1(H2S) = 1  10–7
Ka2(H2S) = 1.3  10–13
Sol. (0.96)
Q11) How much AgBr could dissolve in 1.0 L of 0.4 M NH3? Assume that
[Ag (NH3)2]+ is the only complex formed given, Kf [Ag(NH3)2+]=1.0108,
Ksp (AgBr)= 5.010-13
Q12) Calculate the molar solubility of Zn(OH)2 in 1 M NH3 solution at room
temperature
Ksp of Zn(OH)2 = 1.8  10–17
K stability [Zn (NH3)4]2+= 1.64  1010
