Communication Breakdown
Breakdown and noise occur in the communication process from time to time. It occurs when the message
or the feedback is not sent or received properly- at least in the way that sender intends- or is not received by the
concerned party altogether. Noise is a technical term used to refer to all the possible barriers to effective
communication.
There are instances when miscommunication and misunderstanding occur because of certain barriers. To
become an effective communicator, you should recognize these barriers that hinder the communication process.
This will enable you to control the situation, reset conditions and start anew.
1. Environmental Noise
Environmental noise is noise that physically disrupts communication, such as very loud speakers at a party or the
sounds from a construction site next to a classroom.
2. Physiological-Impairment Noise
Physical conditions such as deafness or blindness can impede effective communication and interfere with
messages being clearly and accurately received.
3. Semantic Noise
Semantic noise refers to when a speaker and a listener have different interpretations of the meanings of certain
words. For example, the word “weed” can be interpreted as an undesirable plant in a yard or as a euphemism for
marijuana.
4. Syntactical Noise
Communication can be disrupted by mistakes in grammar, such as an abrupt change in verb tense during a
sentence.
5. Organizational Noise
Poorly structured messages can also be a barrier. For example, a receiver who is given unclear, badly worded
directions may be unable to figure out how to reach their destination.
6. Cultural Noise
Making stereotypical assumptions, such as unwittingly offending a non-Christian person by wishing them a “Merry
Christmas,” can also detract from communication. Because of this, it is important that each side of a conversation
understands the culture of the other party.
7. Psychological Noise
Certain attitudes can also make communication difficult. For instance, significant anger or sadness may cause
someone to lose focus on the present moment.
Complete the following “I” statements by providing a response; What you would actually say to the person. Also, offer a
suggestion/solution so that the person knows how to correct how they affected you.

2. Your mid-term mark just came out and your overall average is low. Your Guidance Counselor says to you: “You
have to get it together if you want to make it to college.”
3. Some friends has ask if you repeatedly to meet up with them and use the excuse that you are busy or are too
tired. One of them out of frustrations says to you: “You’re too busy to spend any time with your friends. Even
when you have free time, you are “too tired."
5. You ask a friend if they want go to the mall on a Saturday. They respond: “You always want to go to the mall
and I am tired of doing the same thing over and over again.”
