Series and Parallel Circuits

This document summarizes series and parallel circuits. In a series circuit, the resistors are arranged in a chain so there is only one path for current to flow. The equivalent resistance is the sum of the individual resistances. In a parallel circuit, the resistors are connected together so the current splits across the branches and recombines. The equivalent resistance of parallel resistors is calculated by adding the inverse of each resistance. Examples of calculating current and equivalent resistance in series and parallel circuits are provided.

KEYS WORDS

Circuit:
is a path that electricity flows along. It starts at a power source, like a battery, and flows
through a wire to a light bulb or other object and back to other side of the power source.

Equivalent resistance:
The equivalent resistance of a series circuit is the sum of the resistances of its parts.

Short circuit:
A fuse or circuit breaker, placed in series with appliances, creates an open
circuit when dangerously high currents flow.

OHM’S LAW

Ohm's law states that the voltage or potential difference between

two points is directly proportional to the current or electricity
passing through the resistance, and directly proportional to the
resistance of the circuit.

V = VOLTAGE (VOLT)

I = CURRENT (AMPERES)

R = RESISTANCE (OHM)
SERIES CIRCUITS

A series circuit is a circuit in which resistors are arranged in

a chain, so the current has only one path to take.

● The current is the same through each resistor.

● The equivalent resistance of the resistors are equal to
the sum of the each individual resistances (resistors).
● equivalent resistance : R = R1 + R2 + R3 + …
● S.I unit: (A) ampere
PARALLEL CIRCUITS
A parallel circuit is a circuit in which the resistors are
arranged connected together.The current in a parallel
circuit breaks up, with some flowing along each parallel
branch and re-combining when the branches meet again.

● The voltage across each resistor in parallel is the

same.
● The total resistance of a set of resistors in
parallel is found by adding up the resistance
● equivalent resistance of resistors in parallel: 1
/ R = 1 / R1 + 1 / R2 + 1 / R3 +...
● S.I unit: (A) ampere
A series circuit is made by connecting In parallel circuits the same terminals
the end of one device to the beginning of both device are connected together
of another

QUESTION ? AND ANSWER

Q. What is the equivalent resistance in a series circuit of

10, 20 ,30 ohm resistor that connected to a 100v battery.

R = 10, 20, 30 ohm V = IR

V = 100v ● 100 = I (10+20+30)

● I = 100/ 60
I=?
I = 1.666 A
QUESTION ? AND ANSWER

Q. In a parallel circuit there are 4 resistor which are

22ohm each place across 50v battery. Find the equivalent
resistance of the parallel circuit?

R = 22, 22, 22, 22

ohm 1/ R = 1/ R1 + 1/ R2 + 1/ R3 + 1/ R4

● 1/ R = 1/ 22 + 1/ 22 + 1/ 22 + 1/ 22
V = 50v
R = 2/ 11 A
I=?
