Types of Air Conditioners

Central air conditioners circulate cooled air through ducts from the central unit to registers in walls and ceilings, and return warmer air back through return ducts. There are two main types: split-systems, with outdoor compressor units and indoor air-handling units, and packaged units with all components in one outdoor casing connected to ducts. Packaged units are commonly used for cooling capacities between window units and large central systems, such as in restaurants and homes.

CENTRALISED AIR CONDITIONING

Central air conditioners circulate cool air through a system of supply and return
ducts. Supply ducts and registers (i.e., openings in the walls, floors, or ceilings
covered by grills) carry cooled air from the air conditioner to the home. This
cooled air becomes warmer as it circulates through the home; then it flows back to
the central air conditioner through return ducts and registers.

TYPES OF CENTRALISED AIR

CONDITIONING

Types of Central Air Conditioners

A central air conditioner is either a split-system unit or a
packaged unit.

In a split-system central air conditioner, an outdoor metal cabinet

contains the condenser and compressor, and an indoor cabinet
contains the evaporator. In many split-system air conditioners,
this indoor cabinet also contains a furnace or the indoor part of a
heat pump. The air conditioner's evaporator coil is installed in the
cabinet or main supply duct of this furnace or heat pump. If your
home already has a furnace but no air conditioner, a split-system
is the most economical central air conditioner to install.

In a packaged central air conditioner, the evaporator, condenser,

and compressor are all located in one cabinet, which usually is
placed on a roof or on a concrete slab next to the house's
foundation. This type of air conditioner also is used in small
commercial buildings. Air supply and return ducts come from
indoors through the home's exterior wall or roof to connect with
the packaged air conditioner, which is usually located outdoors.
Packaged air conditioners often include electric heating coils or a
natural gas furnace. This combination of air conditioner and
central heater eliminates the need for a separate furnace indoors.
Portable conditioner

Portable air conditioner as its name implies means that this type of
air conditioner is movable although some work such as installing the
exhaust tube and locating a suitable power point need to be done.
Most design will include caster wheels to increase the mobility of the
unit.

Unlike window air conditioner or PTAC which require fixed

installation by trained technicians, the portable type is easily install
by following the DIY instruction.

The front side of the unit will discharge cool air into the room
whereas the other side of the unit discharge hot air due to the heat
exchanger in the unit. This hot air need to be discharged outside the
room through the use of a flexible exhaust tube usually 5" or 3 1/2"
in diameter. Most unit comes with a window installation kit to mount
the hose on the window.

Due to condensation, water droplets are collected in a tray or bucket

inside the portable air conditioner. The water collected has to be
manually removed whenever it is full.

Ductless split system

Ductless air conditioners and ductless heat pumps, also known as ductless
mini split systems, can fit in any space, even where traditional HVAC units
don't. With their virtually endless configurations, ductless air conditioners and
heat pumps deliver comfort with minimal visual impact. Ductless systems are
different from traditional split systems because they come in all shapes and
sizes, and don’t require ducts inside your walls. These solutions are flexible
and work wherever you need them.
Ductless air conditioner systems use the same process for cooling as a typical central air
conditioning system. However, while central air conditioning uses one centrally located
indoor unit that delivers cool air to the entire home through a series of ducts and vents, a
ductless indoor unit blows cooled air directly into one living space. At the minimum, a
complete ductless system includes an indoor unit with an evaporator coil and blower fan;
and it has an outdoor unit with a compressor, condenser coil and fan. The two units are
connected with copper refrigerant tubing and electrical wiring.
Mini split system

Mini-splits are heating and cooling systems that allow you to control the
temperatures in individual rooms or spaces.
Mini-split systems have two main components -- an outdoor compressor/condenser
and an indoor air-handling unit(s) (evaporator). They are easy to install usually
requiring only a three-inch hole through a wall for the conduit; which houses the
power and communication cables, copper tubing, and a condensation drain line,
linking the outdoor and indoor units

They can also be a good choice for room additions where extending or installing
distribution ductwork is not feasible, and energy efficient new homes that require
only a small space conditioning system.
Ductless, mini split-system air-conditioners (mini splits) have
numerous potential applications in residential, commercial, and
institutional buildings.

Packaged Air Conditioners

The window and split air conditioners are usually used for the small air
conditioning capacities up to 5 tons. The central air conditioning
systems are used for where the cooling loads extend beyond 20 tons.
The packaged air conditioners are used for the cooling capacities in
between these two extremes. The packaged air conditioners are
available in the fixed rated capacities of 3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 tons. These
units are used commonly in places like restaurants, telephone
exchanges, homes, small halls, etc.

As the name implies, in the packaged air conditioners all the important
components of the air conditioners are enclosed in a single casing like
window AC. Thus the compressor, cooling coil, air handling unit and
the air filter are all housed in a single casing and assembled at the
factory location.
