Mid Semester Examination

2020 Even Semester (Jan-April)
Date: 3 March 2020

Total points: 120

Time: 120 minutes

Please answer all questions. Show your work, and use calculators to find desired values. Present your
answers in organized manner.

1. (25 points) Find the equation of the cubic polynomial y = ax3+bx2+cx+d, that passes through the
following points: (-1,0), (0,-4), (1,-4), and (2,6).

2. (25 points) Consider the following boundary value problem: sin 2 , with 0 < x <
1, and y(0) = y(1) = 0. Divide the interval in four sections and find the value of y at x = 0.5 by
solving using finite difference method.

3. (35 points) Consider the following set of nonlinear algebraic equations satisfied by three
unknowns x1, x2, and x3.
4 3 57
5 9
3 6 15

Starting with guessed values of x1 = 1, x2 = 1, and x3 = 1, obtain the solution using Newton
Raphson’s method. Show your work. You result should be correct up to two decimal places.

4. (35 points) Consider the following set of chemical reactions where A transforms to B, B
transforms to C and vice versa:

where k1 = 1 min-1, k1 = 1 min-1, k1 = 2 min-1, k1 = 3 min-1. The initial concentrations are CA0 = 1
mM, and CB0 = CC0 = 0. Find out the concentrations of the three species after 1 minute by solving
using eigenvalue method.
