Depp has taken on the task of challenging himself to portray "larger-than-life" roles,
starting with a supporting role in Oliver Stone's Vietnam War film Platoon in 1986, then
playing the title character in the romantic dark fantasy Edward Scissorhands (1990). He later
found box office success in the fantasy adventure film Sleepy Hollow (1999), the fantasy
swashbuckler film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and its
sequels, the fantasy film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), the fantasy film Alice in
Wonderland (2010) and voicing the title character in the animated action comedy western
Rango (2011). He has collaborated on nine films with director, producer, and friend Tim
Burton.
Depp is regarded as one of the world's biggest film stars. He has gained worldwide
critical acclaim for his portrayals of such people as screenwriter-director Ed Wood in Ed
Wood, undercover FBI agent Joseph D. Pistone in Donnie Brasco, "gonzo" journalist Raoul
Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, cocaine kingpin George Jung in Blow, author J. M.
Barrie in Finding Neverland, the Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger in Michael Mann's
Public Enemies, and the Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass. Films featuring Depp
have grossed over $3.1 billion at the United States box office and over $7.6 billion
worldwideHis most commercially successful films are the Pirates of the Caribbean films,
which have grossed $3 billion; Alice in Wonderland, which grossed $1 billion; Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory, which grossed $474 million; and The Tourist, which grossed $278
million worldwide.
Depp has been nominated for major acting awards, including three nominations for
Academy Award for Best Actor. Depp won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor –
Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a
Leading Role for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He has been listed
in the 2012 Guinness World Records as the highest paid actor, with earnings of $75 million.
Depp was inducted as a Disney Legend in 2015.
Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky, the youngest of four children of Betty Sue
Palmer (née Wells; 1935–2016),[13] a waitress, and John Christopher Depp (born 1938), a
civil engineer. Depp is of mostly English ancestry, with some ancestors from elsewhere in
Europe. He is descended from a French Huguenot immigrant, Pierre Deppe or Dieppe, who
settled in Virginia around 1700. He is also of 3/2048 African descent, as he descends twice
over from an African slave whose biracial daughter, Elizabeth Key Grinstead, was the first
woman of Sub-Saharan African ancestry in North America to sue for her freedom from
slavery and win (in 1655). Depp is a 20th cousin of Elizabeth II.
Depp moved frequently during his childhood. He and his siblings lived in more than
20 different places, eventually settling in Miramar, Florida in 1970. Depp's parents divorced
in 1978 when he was 15. His mother married Robert Palmer (died 2000), whom Depp has
called "an inspiration to me".
With the gift of a guitar from his mother when he was 12, Depp began playing in
various garage bands. A year after his parents' divorce, he dropped out of high school to
become a rock musician. He attempted to go back to school two weeks later, but the principal
told him to follow his dream of being a musician. He played with The Kids, a band that
enjoyed modest local success. The Kids set out together for Los Angeles in pursuit of a
record deal, changing their name to Six Gun Method, but the group split up before signing a
record deal. Depp subsequently collaborated with the band Rock City Angels and co-wrote
their song "Mary", which appeared on Rock City Angels' debut Geffen Records album Young
Man's Blues.
On December 20, 1983, Depp married Lori Anne Allison, the sister of his band's bass
player and singer. During their marriage she worked as a makeup artist while he worked a
variety of odd jobs, including a telemarketer for pens. His wife introduced him to actor
Nicolas Cage, who advised him to pursue an acting career. Depp and his wife divorced in

Teuku Umar
Teuku Umar who was born in Meulaboh Aceh Barat in 1854, is the son of a
Uleebalang named Teuku Ahmad Mahmud of marriage with the sister of the King of
Meulaboh. Umar had two sisters and three brothers.
When war broke out in 1873 Aceh Teuku Umar participated fighters fought alongside
other Aceh, he was only 19 years. At first he fought in his home, then proceed to Aceh Barat.
At this young age, has been appointed as Teuku Umar keuchik village (village head) in the
Southwestern region of Meulaboh.
At the age of 20 years old, married with Teuku Nyak Sofiah Umar, son Uleebalang
Glumpang. To increase the degree itself, Umar Teuku Nyak then remarried with Malighai,
daughter of Commander Sagi XXV Mukim.
In 1880, married the widow of Umar Teuku Cut Nyak Dien, the daughter of his uncle
Teuku Nanta Setia. Husband Cut Nya Dien, that Teuku Ibrahim Lamnga died in June 1878 in
the war against the Dutch in Gle Tarun. Both then fought alongside launching attacks on
Dutch posts.
February 1899, General Van Heutsz received reports from his spies about the coming
Teuku Umar in Meulaboh, and immediately put some pretty strong forces on the border
Meulaboh. The eve of February 11, 1899 Teuku Umar with his troops arrived on the outskirts
of the town of Meulaboh. Acehnese troops were surprised when troops Van Heutsz intercept.
Umar troop positions unprofitable and could not retreat. The only way to save his troops are
fighting. In the battle that Teuku Umar autumn enemy bullets through his chest.
His body is buried at the Masjid Kampung Hulu Sungai Mugo in Meulaboh. Hearing
the news of her husband's death, Cut Nyak Dien was very sad, but that does not mean the
struggle has ended. With the death of her husband, Cut Nyak Dien determined to continue the
struggle of the people of Aceh against the Netherlands. He also took over the leadership of
the resistance fighters in Aceh.
For the devotion and the struggle and the fighting spirit of sacrifice against the Dutch
colonialists, Teuku Umar was awarded the title of National Hero. Name Teuku Umar also
immortalized as the name of the street in a number of areas in the country. One of the Navy
warship named KRI Teuku Umar (385). Besides the University of Teuku Umar in Meulaboh
is named by name.
Teuku Umar (Meulaboh, West Aceh, 1854 – February 11, 1899) was a leader of a
guerrilla campaign against the Dutch in Aceh during the Aceh War. He fell when Dutch
troops launched a surprise attack in Meulaboh. His body was buried in the Mugo area.
After Teuku Umar's death, his wife Cut Nyak Dhien continued to lead the guerrillas
against the Dutch. He was later made a Pahlawan Nasional Indonesia (National Hero of
Indonesia).
Umar joined the guerrilla forces in 1873 at the age of 19. At first, he fought in
Meulaboh; he later expanded his operations to different parts of West Aceh.[1]
At the age of 20, Umar married Nyak Sofia; not long after, he took Nyak
Malighai as his second wife. In 1880, Umar married his cousin Cut Nyak Dhien; Dhien
later joined him in the guerrilla campaign.[1]
In 1883, the Dutch colonial government signed a peace treaty with the Acehnese
guerrillas. That same year Umar joined them as an undercover operative over Dhien's
complaints, working his way up through the colonial military's ranks. After war broke
out again in 1884, Umar worked to stop the Acehnese people's struggle. For his service,
on January 1, 1894 Umar was given the title Johan Pahlawan and control of a legion of
250 fully armed soldiers. Eventually, Umar was given control of 120 more troops as well
as 17 lieutenants.[1]
On March 30, 1896, Umar and his troops deserted, taking including 800
weapons, 25,000 bullets, 500 kilograms (1,100 lb) of ammunition, and 18,000 dollars.
Together with 400 soldiers under the command of Teuku Panglima Polem Muhammad
Daud, Umar attacked the Dutch forces, killing 25 and injuring 190.[1]
In retaliation, the Dutch governor sent soldiers en masse to capture or kill Umar.
Umar was killed in an ambush on February 10, 1899 in Meulaboh.[1]
