Water Purification Assignment

This document contains an assignment on water purification submitted by KHYNAN RHYSS P. VICENTE. It includes questions and answers on topics like how sand filtration works to purify water, how adding aluminum sulphate causes impurities to clump and settle out, and why deep wells produce clear water due to natural layers of filtration in the earth. The assignment also discusses which impurities can and cannot be removed by filtration, sedimentation, and coagulation processes and provides a brief overview of modern water purification methods like boiling, water purifiers, chlorination, and distillation.

ASSIGNMENT FOR WATER PURIFICATION

Answer the following questions and submit your answers in the assignment under this topic.

1. In your own words, briefly explain how a sand filtration works?

• Sand filtration uses sand to filter water. The filtered water settles slowly into the sand
filter's sediment, leaving the soil particles in the delicate pores of the sand behind. Pre-
filtration of disinfection devices, preparing for micro-and ultra-filtration, recirculation
systems, rinse water procedures, irrigation systems, basin water filtration, and groundwater
cleaning are all applications of sand filtration.

2. What is the appearance of the untreated water mixture before and after the addition of
aluminum sulphate (or flocculants) in the mixture? Discuss how this kind of chemical
treatment can purify the water.
• The untreated water mixture is polluted in color and contains floating debris and colloids;
it is often very transparent and almost invisible depending on the contamination degree.
When flocculants are added to the liquid, the ions clump together and settle to the bottom,
making the water smooth and translucent. The addition of a flocculant, mainly comprised
of ions, to the coagulation phase of water treatment, purifies water by removing organic
and inorganic waste that does not settle in the way. These ions then bind to the particles
that generally repel each other due to their diffused layer, causing them to clump together
and settle in the water as flocs.

3. How do you explain the fact that a deep well drilled into the earth produces clear water?
• All societies depend on wells for survival. Wells provide a secure and adequate source of
water for domestic use, agriculture, and industry in many areas. Multiple layers of filters
consisting of grains make up the Earth's layers. These particles also effectively filter out
impurities and harmful particles from the water. The cleaner the water is, the deeper the

well is dug, and when we use precipitation as a source of water, the water steadily soaks
up and flows into the many layers of natural filtration.

4. Indicate the type (or types) of impurities can be removed by:

a. Filtration: Biological Impurities & Suspended Particles
b. Sedimentation: Sediments & Suspended Particles
c. Coagulation: Suspended Particles, Colloids & Toxic Substances

5. Indicate the type (or types) of impurities that cannot be removed by:
a. Filtration: Chemical Substances & Dissolved Salt
b. Sedimentation: Biological Impurities, Colloids, Finely Dispersed Suspended Particles,
Disease-Causing Agents & Dissolved Solids
a. Coagulation: Biological Impurities

6. Research on-line and look for the modern methods water can be purified? Briefly explain the
process.
Water purifiers are essential to every home. Safe drinking water is necessary to avoid
the risk of waterborne illnesses. Furthermore, the following are the easy, modern, and
effective ways to purify water.
Boiling - high temperatures cause the bacteria and virus to dissipate, removing all

Water Chlorination - works as an oxidant and quickly kills microorganisms,

making water safe for consumption.
Distillation - a water purification process that involves collecting the condensed
water after evaporation, which ensures that water is free of contaminants
