*These  rules  are  not  final  and  are  subject  to  change  closer  to  the  tournament
date.  These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.
Section  1:  General  Rules  (all  sports)
A)  Personal  and  Team  Conduct

1. Participants  are  required  to  represent  themselves  and  their  respective

schools  with  respect  and  dignity.
2. Any  team  or  individual  involved  in  destructive  or  negative  behavior  at
Post-‐Secondary  Games  2011  events  or  venues,  including  hotels  and
accommodations,  will  be  ejected  from  the  tournament  at  the  discretion  of
the  Advisory  Committee.  Spirit  Deposits  may  also  be  forfeited.
3. The  PSG  Committee  reserves  the  right  to  disqualify  any  team  based  on  the
behavior  of  any  given  team  member  of  that  particular  team.
4. Alcohol,  smoking  and/or  other  banned  substances  are  PROHIBITED  and
are  not  to  be  consumed  or  used  in  the  dressing  rooms  or  anywhere  in  the
gyms  or  surrounding  areas.  Failure  to  comply  with  this  rule  will  result  in
the  expulsion  of  the  player(s)  from  the  Tournament  and  possible
suspension  of  the  team(s).  A  referee  may  eject  a  player/team  if,  at  his/her
discretion,  he/she  deems  the  player/team  to  be  under  the  influence  of
alcohol  or  illegal  substances.

B)  Starting  of  the  Game

1. A  representative  from  each  team  (coach/captain)  is  required  to  check-‐in

at  the  score  table  prior  to  each  game.  Here  they  must  fill  out  game  roster
sheets  fully  and  accurately.
2. It  is  recommended  that  both  teams  be  dressed  and  ready  to  play  10
minutes  before  the  scheduled  start  of  their  game.    All  games  start  at  the
time  published  in  the  schedule.
3. A  late  team  will  be  given  a  grace  period  of  five  (5)  minutes  past  the
scheduled  start  time,  which  will  be  deducted  from  the  total  playing  time.
4. Any  team  without  the  required  number  of  players  within  5  minutes  of  the
scheduled  time  will  default  that  game.    If  any  team  member  is  in  doubt
about  their  eligibility,  they  should  speak  with  their  team  captain/coach,
the  Scorekeeper,  or  anyone  on  the  PSG  committee  immediately.
5. If  both  teams  are  late,  both  will  default  and  no  points  will  be  awarded.
6. Teams  defaulting  a  game  for  any  reason  will  have  half  their  Spirit  Deposit
forfeited.
7. If  players,  team  officials,  game  timekeeper,  etc.  show  up  for  a  game  in  a
condition  which  in  the  referee’s  opinion,  render  them  unable  to  take  part,
the  referee  may  default  the  game.
8. With  respect  to  dangerous  playing  conditions,  the  decision  of  whether  to
begin  or  continue  a  game  is  solely  the  decision  of  the  referees.  The
Commissionaire  shall  reschedule  a  game  postponed  for  any  reason  at  the
earliest  possible  time  prior  to  the  end  of  the  round  robin.  If  more  than  one
half  remains  to  be  played,  then  the  entire  game  shall  be  replayed.  If  less

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

than  half  remains  to  be  played,  then  only  the  unfinished  portion  of  the
game  shall  be  played.

C)  Coaches  and  Captains

1. Each  team  must  have  a  designated  Team  Captain  and/or  Coach.

2. It  is  the  responsibility  of  each  Team  Captain/Coach  to  ensure  that  all
players  of  their  team  are  fully  eligible  to  participate.
3. Each  team  must  identify  their  Team  Captain  and/or  Coach  at  the
beginning  of  each  game.  If  the  captain  is  not  present,  the  team  will
nominate  a  player  to  be  acting  captain  for  that  game.  This  person  will  take
on  all  duties  and  responsibilities  as  the  actual  captain.  This  person  will  be
identified  as  the  acting  captain  on  the  score  sheet.
4. ONLY  THE  CAPTAIN/COACH  should  be  speaking  with  the  referees  during
the  game  time.  Players  who  wish  to  discuss  any  issue  with  a  referee  must
ask  the  Captain  or  Coach  to  speak  on  their  behalf.
5. It  is  the  responsibility  of  each  Team  Captain/Coach  to  fill  out  the  game
roster  sheet  fully  before  each  game  and  sign  it  to  affirm  the  eligibility  and
information  of  each  player  on  the  roster.
6. Team  Captains  and  Coach  are  expected  to  know  and  understand  the
general  and  specific  rules  for  their  sport.  They  must  abide  by  them,  and
ensure  that  their  team  is  aware  of  them  and  their  consequences.  If  there  is
any  confusion  regarding  the  rules,  please  contact  the  PSG  committee.
7. It  is  the  Team  Captain's  and  Coach’s  duty  to  know  his/her  duties  and
responsibilities  before  the  game  begins.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

Section  2:  Specific  Rules  (5on5  Basketball)

1. A  team  must  have  a  minimum  of  3  players  on  the  court  in  order  to  play.
2. Teams  are  Co-‐ed,  however  there  is  no  regulation  regarding  a  minimum
amount  of  female  players  on  the  team  or  on  the  court  at  a  time.
3. It  shall  be  the  responsibility  of  the  away  team  to  make  alternate  sweater
arrangements  when  there  is  a  conflict  between  two  team  colours.
4. Each  player  must  wear  matching  colours  to  be  eligible  to  play.

B)  Equipment

1. No  jewellery  (unless  properly  taped  down),  non-‐elastic  headbands,  or

hard  support  braces  are  allowed  during  game  time.  Captains  will  be
warned  at  the  beginning  of  the  game  to  have  all  their  players  remove  such
items.  During  the  game,  players  found  with  such  items  will  be  asked  to
leave  play  until  the  item  is  removed.  Consistent  violation  during  the  game
is  a  technical  foul.  (Note:  See  NHSF  rules  for  more  information  about
prohibited  items  on  the  court.)
2. A  game  ball  will  be  provided  for  game  play  only  (not  for  practicing).
Practice  equipment  may  be  signed  out  at  the  equipment  desk  (if
available).
3. All  players  must  have  a  pinnie/jersey  with  a  defined  and  separate  number
on  it,  and  must  be  in  contrasting  colour  to  the  opposing  team.  It  is  the
responsibility  of  the  captain  to  sign  out  pinnies  from  the  equipment  desk
prior  to  game  play.
4. Proper  gym  attire  must  be  worn  to  participate  (no  jeans  or  pants  /  shorts
with  zippers).  Proper  athletic  footwear  for  the  sport  is  required  (Running
shoes  with  non-‐marking  soles  -‐  no  street  shoes,  boots,  dress  shoes,  bare
feet,  or  sandals  etc).

C)  Game  Lengths

1. Round-‐robin  games  consist  of  two  12  minute  run  time  halves.  Quarter-‐
Final,  Semi-‐Finals  and  Finals  will  consist  of  two  15,  15  and  20  minute  run
time  halves  respectively.  Stop  time  will  occur  in  the  last  2-‐minutes  of  the
second  half  unless  a  team  is  ahead  by  more  than  9  points  at  the  one
minute  mark.
2. Overtime  will  only  take  place  during  playoff  games  and  shall  consist  of
one  2  minute  stop  time  period.  Consecutive  overtime  will  occur  until
someone  is  victorious.
3. Half-‐time  will  consist  of  2  minute  for  round-‐robin  games,  and  5  minutes
for  playoff  games,  unless  the  game  is  behind  schedule,  in  which  case  the
referee  can  shorten  the  length  of  half-‐time.  Half-‐time  must  be  at  least  2
minutes.  1  minute  is  given  prior  to  the  start  of  an  overtime  period.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

D)  Gameplay

1. Each  team  is  given  1  non-‐transferable  time-‐out  per  half.  One  time-‐out  is
given  per  team  in  the  overtime  period.  Time-‐outs  are  30  seconds  long
each.
2. The  referee  administers  throw-‐ins  in  the  front-‐court.  The  referee  only
administers  throw-‐ins  in  the  back-‐court  on  a  foul  call  and  during  stop-‐
time  situations.  All  other  times,  teams  are  allowed  to  inbound  the  ball
from  the  spot  closest  to  where  the  ball  went  out,  as  soon  as  they  gain
control  of  the  ball.
3. Free  substitution  can  occur  anytime  except  on  free  throws  as  long  as
playing  time  is  not  impeded.  To  substitute,  a  player  must  run  in/out  at  the
designated  bench  area.  Consistent  violation  is  a  technical  foul.
4. Back-‐court  common  fouls  will  only  be  shot  during  stop  time  when  their
team  is  in  the  bonus  situation.  Intentional  flagrant  or  technical  fouls  are
always  shot  regardless  of  when  they  take  place.
5. Players  will  have  five  seconds  to  inbound  the  ball  whenever  it  is  sent  out
of  play,  and  ten  seconds  to  cross  half  court.
6. A  possession  arrow  will  determine  who  gets  possession  of  each  jump  ball
and  who  gets  possession  of  the  ball  at  the  start  of  the  second  half.  For
example,  if  Team  A  wins  the  tip‐off,  the  possession  arrow  will  point  to
Team  B  and  Team  B  will  get  possession  of  the  ball  when  the  next  jump
ball  is  called  (or  at  half  time  if  no  jump  ball  is  called  in  the  half).  The
possession  arrow  will  then  point  to  Team  A,  who  will  get  possession  of
the  next  jump  ball,  and  so  on.
7. The  following  offensive  violations  will  also  award  the  opposing  team  with
possession  of  the  ball:
a)  Three  seconds  in  the  key
b)  Traveling  /  double  dribble
c)  Going  over  the  half  court  line  and  back
d)  Offensive  foul
e)  Stepping  out  of  bounds
f)  Setting  an  illegal  screen  (moving  screen)
8. For  safety  reasons,  the  following  will  be  in  effect  in  regards  to  saving  a
ball  from  out  of  bounds:
-‐  Any  save  attempt  made  blindly  (i.e.  referee  believes  that  player
is  unaware  of  surroundings)  the  ball  will  be  considered  out  of
bounds  regardless  of  the  save  attempt.
·  No  save  attempts  are  to  be  made  intentionally  off  an  opposing
player.  Any  such  actions  will  result  in  the  ball  being  called  out  of
bounds.
·  Players  are  permitted  to  intentionally  save  to  a  team  mate,  to  an
open  area  of  the  court  (if  deemed  intentional  by  the  referee),  or
to  call  a  time  out.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

E)  Defaults

1. If  a  team  fails  to  appear  with  a  minimum  of  3  players  within  five  minutes
past  the  scheduled  start  of  the  game,  they  will  default  the  game  to  the
opposition.  Defaulted  games  may  result  in  a  loss  of  Spirit  Deposit.
2. The  winning  team  in  a  defaulted  game  will  be  given  3  points  and  a  20-‐0
victory  or  the  score  that  stood  at  the  time  of  default  if  the  non-‐defaulting
team  was  ahead  at  the  time.
3. The  team  awarded  the  win  for  the  defaulted  game  may  use  the  remaining
time  and  rink  facility  time  for  practice  purposes.  Members  of  the
defaulting  team  can  remain  on  the  floor  only  with  the  permission  of  the
winning  team.
4. Defaulted  games  shall  be  counted  in  the  duration  of  a  suspension.

F)  Tournament  Standings

1. In  round  robin  play,  standings  shall  be  decided  on  the  following  point
system:

-‐ 3  points  for  a  win  in  the  divisional  standings
-‐ 1  point  for  a  tie  in  the  divisional  standings
-‐ 0  points  for  a  loss

2. Playoff  games  will  follow  the  playoff  bracket  provided  and  will  be  single
elimination.

3. Divisional  standing  will  be  ranked  based  on  the  number  of  points.  In  the
event  of  a  tie  in  the  standings,  the  following  will  be  used  as  tie  breakers
(in  this  order):  total  wins,  points  for,  points  against,  record  between
teams,  coin  toss.
4. In  the  event  of  a  division  with  an  odd  number  of  teams,  one  team  chosen
at  random  will  play  2  games  rather  than  3.  This  team  will  receive  a  20‐0
win  and  3  points  in  the  standings  (default  win).

G)  Fouls

1. Five  personal  fouls  are  permitted.  When  a  player  receives  his/her  fifth
personal  foul,  he/she  is  suspended  from  further  play.
2. Technical  fouls  count  as  personal  fouls  and  team  fouls.
3. 7  teams  fouls  places  a  team  in  the  bonus  situation.  10+  team  fouls  places  a
team  in  the  double  bonus  situation  (automatic  two  shots).
4. A  technical  foul  to  the  bench  counts  as  a  personal  foul  to  the  captain.  This
is  the  same  if  given  to  a  player  already  ejected  form  the  game.
5. Two  technical  fouls  and  the  player  is  ejected  from  that  game.  The  nature
of  the  technical  will  determine  by  the  PSG  committee  if  further  action  is
necessary.

These  rules  are  accurate  as  of  March  1st  2011.

6. Technical  fouls  are  two  shots  plus  possession  at  the  division  line.
7. Intentional  fouls  are  two  shots  plus  possession  at  the  spot  nearest  to
where  the  foul  took  place.
8. On  foul  shots,  ALL  PLAYERS  must  wait  until  the  ball  hits  the  basket  rim
before  moving  into  the  key.
9. If  a  team  should  receive  two  direct  technical  fouls  then  the  game  will  be
over  as  soon  as  the  second  one  is  given.  If  a  team  is  winning  and  a  second
direct  technical  is  awarded  to  the  team,  the  game  will  be  treated  as  a
forfeit  and  the  losing  team  will  be  awarded  a  20-‐0  win  and  potentially
lose  their  spirit  deposit.  The  score  will  stand,  as  is,  when  a  losing  team  is
awarded  two  direct  technicals.
10. Any  player  ejected  may  be  asked  to  leave  the  gym  by  the  officials.  Failure
to  do  so  may  result  in  a  technical  foul  to  the  captain  or  a  Conduct  Review.
