UNIT 1 : SUFFIXES AND PREFIXES

In English there are many word endings ( SUFFIXES ) and beginning ( PREFIXES ) that can be
added to a word to change its meaning or to make it into different part of speech. Some of them are
shown here.

Making verbs Making nouns

The endings -ize and -ify can be added to The ending -er , -ment , and -action can be

Making adjectives from verbs

The ending -able can be added to many verbs to
make them into adjectives, like this: These PREFIXES can be added to the
beginning of some words to change to
Wash -able Washable their opposite.( -un, -in, -im, -il, -ir, -dis,
-de, -non )

Ceramics is washable. Increase -de Decrease

The temperature decrease 15 degree.

Prefix is a group of letters added to the beginning of a word or base to change


its meaning, “ Re” ( meaning “again”) is a prefix in “refill”

Suffix is an element that is placed at the ending of a morpheme ( a morpheme is a


unit that on occasion works as word ) There are two kind of suffix: Derivational
Suffixes.

Derivational Suffixes: They can change the meaning and grammatical


category
of a word. The most common ones are:

Noun -ion, -ment, -ance Action ( noun )

Verb -ify, -en, -ate, -ize Memorize ( verb )

Adjective -ous, -y, -ful, -ic, -ish Whitish ( adjective )

-ary, -ive, -ble


Adverb -ly, wise, -ward Carefully ( adverb )

Inflectional Suffixes: They are used to change, in a word, either the verbal time, or the
number, or to make Anglo possessives or comparative degree and superlative of some word.
