Temperature Effects on Fish
By Dan Ashe, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Temperature plays a significant role with overall performance,

behavior, and health of fish. Fish can be grouped into three
categories based on their temperature preferences which include
cold, cool, and warm water. Most of the fish species we have here
in East Texas lakes are warm water fish. However, notable cool
water fish we have include crappie and freshwater drum. Both
warm and cool water fish can exist in the same environment, but
they will respond differently to temperature. Temperature’s largest
effects are on first year survival, swimming performance, feeding /
digestion, spawning, and the susceptibility to diseases.
Water temperature can greatly determine first year survival of
fish. A brutal winter can be the deciding factor of an entire missing
year class. Likewise, a mild winter can yield a phenomenal year
class that can sustain a fishery for years afterwards. Even though
we may complain about occasional cold snaps, Sam Rayburn/
Toledo Bend winters are relatively mild and have little impact on
year class strength (water levels and forage do). In more northern
latitudes, winters are a major deciding factor for first year survival.
Size of young fish influences their winter survivability more than
just about anything else. Small fish have increased likelihood of
starvation (less available food), predation risk (more vulnerable
than larger fish), and osmoregulatory failure because gill
membrane permeability changes compromising ion (i.e. oxygen)
transport.
Fish are cold blooded animals that are technically classified
as “poikilotherms” meaning their
body temperature is directly related
to their immediate surroundings.
Individual fish species have their ideal
temperature range in which they refrigerator versus sitting out in the sun). So, at low temperatures about sick fish

EPA IGNORES BOATERS IN FUEL DEBATE
E15....DEAL WITH IT!!!
by pro guide Joe Joslin
Hello, Anglers.
As boaters and anglers it is not like we don’t
already have a challenge paying for expensive
outboard motor oil (average $25 per gal) and
high octane fuel. Does E15 sound familiar to
you? If not, it will before long. The beloved EPA
(Environmental Protection Agency) just sent
boaters and outboard engine manufacturers a
message a few weeks ago....”E15....in your face.....
Deal With it!!” They (EPA) approved E15 (gasoline
up to 15% ethanol) with no testing on outboard
motors. E10 has been a challenge in and of itself
and has caused boaters to add expensive additives
(Staybil/Yamaha Ring Free) to try and negate
some of the problems a fuel made from grain
seems to cause. Does ethanol cause the same
concerns for 4-stroke outboards as it does for
2-strokes? Hold the phone, we’re working on that
answer but so far have not found solid info to say
either way but early indications say most likely.
One term in the ethanol issue is called ‘phase
separation’ which happens when gas becomes
over-saturated with water, leading the water/
ethanol mixture to separate from the gasoline
and fall to the bottom of the tank (where
the engine’s fuel pickup is located). However,
since ethanol absorbs water more readily than
gasoline and it burns harmlessly through the
engine, adding more ethanol to gas will decrease
the chance for phase separation. You’d think that
would be a good thing, right?
However, as you increase the amount of water
in ethanol, this mixture also becomes more
acidic, increasing the potential to corrode metal,
engine parts plus aluminum fuel tanks. Also Author Joe Joslin gasing up his new 2011 Skeeter 21 FX with E10.

Clint & Jordyn West Win C.A.S. .

Southeast Sam Rayburn Tournament
By John Watts

C.A.S.T. Southeast Region held its first tournament of 2011 on Sam Rayburn Reservoir
February 12, 2011. With extremely cold weather for several days prior to the tournament, C.A.S.T. couples
were fortunate to have temperatures in the mid 60’s and little to no wind. With the warm temperatures the
anglers were warm but the cold water left the fish in a less than biting mood.
As always someone is able to unlock a secret to get the fish to bite. Such was the case for Clint & Jordyn
West. Clint & Jordyn are a father/daughter team from Beaumont. As circumstance would have it, Jordyn
had the option to play basketball or go to a bass tournament with her Dad. Well she picked bass fishing
and it was a good choice. Clint & Jordyn brought in a three fish stringer weighing 11.98 lbs. to win the
Sam Rayburn event. Plus, to top it off right, they tied for Big Bass on the day with a nice 5.23 lbs. fish. We
think Jordyn may be choosing bass tournaments over basketball more often!!! Congratulations on a great
finish!
Coming in with the number two bag of the day were long time C.A.S.T. veterans Les Brown & Peggy
Schaffner with 11.89 lbs. Les & Peggy worked hard all day to get the bites they had. Now their goal is to
keep their good finishes coming and make the 2011 C.A.S.T. Southeast Region TOP SIX Invitational Team.
Good Luck to Les & Peggy!!
Taking Third Place with a nice five fish stringer was Jeff & Paula Ashen weighing 10.73 lbs. On a day
when bites were hard to come by, their small limit was very respectable. Good Job guys!
The Big Bass tied by Clint & Jordyn belonged to former C.A.S.T. Southeast Region Directors, John &
Jennifer Anderson. Their 5.23 lbs. bass was caught in 18 ft. of water on a black & blue Combat jig tipped
with an E2 Baits “Doodle Bug” trailer.
Our next tournament will be Saturday, March 12th at Toledo Bend Reservoir from the Fin & Feather
Resort. Registration will be Saturday morning at Fin & Feather at 5 am. Please bring a new couple along Clint & Jordyn West brought in a three fish stringer
for some great fishing! weighing 11.98 lbs. to win the Sam Rayburn event.

Jeff & Paula Ashen came

in third place with their
weight of 10.73 lbs.

Les Brown & Peggy

Schaffner came in second
place with 11.89 lbs.

Control invasive feral hogs
By CHADD CAPERTON Jasper County Ag/NR agent

If you are having problems with feral hogs on your

property or on land that you are leasing, you are not
alone. More and more incidents of feral hog damage are
being reported every day. These animals are very smart
and are very quick to reproduce, having up to 2 litters a
year with an average of 6 piglets.
Feral hogs are omnivorous, meaning they will
consume both plants and animals, including all kinds
of bugs, grubs, worms, and other insects. This diet
brings them into areas where they are not welcome such
as hay fields,
fields, gardens, and turf grasses on golf courses
and yards.
The feral hog is not native to the US and is
considered an invasive species. It is not legal to
transport feral hogs unless they are being taken
to a certified holding facility registered with Texas
Department of Agriculture, but it is legal to harvest the
hogs year round.
When trapping, remember that hogs are creatures of
habit. It is best to always pre-bait the area where you
have seen signs of hog activity to get them coming back
on a routine basis. Once you are confident they are
coming consistently then set up the trap and over the This will ensure that any other hogs that visit the trap will get a
