Activity #7.2: More on Solving Ideal Gas Law Problems

Directions:Use the ideal gas law, “PV-nRT”, and the universal gas constant R = 0.0821 L*atm
to solve the following problems: K*mol If pressure is needed in kPa then convert by multiplying
by 101.3kPa / 1atm to get R =8.31 kPa*L / (K*mole). Show your answers legibly, concisely, and
completely. Use separate sheet of paper.

1. If I have 4 moles of a gas at a pressure of 5.6 atm and a volume of 12 liters, what is the
temperature?
Given:
n = 4 moles
p = 5.6 atm
v = 12 L
R = 0.0821 Latm/Kmol

Sol. Ans.
T = pv/nR
T = 204.63K
T = (5.6 atm)(12 L) / (4 moles)(0.0821 Latm/Kmol)

2. If I have an unknown quantity of gas at a pressure of 1.2 atm, a volume of 31 liters, and
a temperature of 87 0 C, how many moles of gas do I have?
Given:
p = 1.2 atm Sol:
v = 31 L pv = nRT n = pv/RT
T = 87ºC = 87 + 273 = 360K n = (1.2 atm)(31 L) / (0.0821 Latm/Kmol)(360K)
R = 0.0821 Latm/Kmol Ans.
n = 1.26 moles

3. If I have 7.7 moles of gas at a pressure of 0.09 atm and at a temperature of 56 0 C, what
is the volume of the container that the gas is in?
Given:
n = 7.7 moles Sol.
p = 0.09 atm v = nRT/p
T = 56ºC = 56 + 273 = 329K v = (7.7mol)(0.0821 Latm/Kmol)(329K) / (0.09 atm
R = 0.0821 Latm/Kmol Ans.
v = 2310.93L
4. If I contain 3 moles of gas in a container with a volume of 60 liters and at a temperature
of 400 K, what is the pressure inside the container?
Given:
n = 3 moles
v = 60 L
T = 400K
R = 0.0821 Latm/Kmol

Sol. Ans.
pv = nRT p = nRT/v p = 1.64 atm
p = (3 moles)(0.0821 Latm/Kmol)(400K) / (60L)

Activity 7.5 Solve It Up!

Directions: Solve the following heat engine work done related problems.

1. During a cyclic process, a heat engine absorbs 350 J of heat from a hot reservoir,
does work and ejects an amount of heat 100 J into the surroundings (cold reservoir).
Calculate the efficiency of the heat engine?
Sol.
n = 1 – QL/QH
n = 1 – 100J/350J
Ans.

nThe
= 0.71
heat engine has 71% efficiency, implying that this heat engine converts only
71% of the input heat into work.
2. A steam engine boiler is maintained at 250°C and water is converted into steam. This
steam is used to do work and heat is ejected to the surrounding air at temperature 300K.
Calculate the maximum efficiency it can have?
Sol.
n = 1 – TL/TH
n = 1 – 300K/523K
Ans.

The nsteam
= 0.43engine can have a maximum possible of 43% efficiency, implying this steam
engine can convert 43% of input heat into useful work remaining 57% is ejected as heat.
In sample the efficiency is even less than 43%.
Activity 7.6: Calculation Time

Direction: Solve for the following problem. Show your solutions.

1. The surface of the Sun is approximately at 5700 K, and the temperature of the Earth's
surface is approximately 290 K.  What entropy changes occur when 1000 J of thermal
energy is transferred from the Sun to the Earth?
Sol.
Entropy of the Sun ∆S = -1000J/5700K = -0.175J/K
Entropy of the Sun ∆S = 1000J/290K = 3.448J/K
3.448 – 0.175 = 3.27J/K
The Entropy of the sun – earth system is increased by 3.27J/K

2. An ice tray contains 500 g of water.  Calculate the change in entropy of the water as it
freezes completely and slowly at 0 oC.
Sol.
The water freezes at 0ºC = 273K
∆S = ∆Q/T = (0.5kg)(333 000 J/kg) / 273K
Ans.

= - 610J/K
3. If you toss two dice, what is the total number of ways that you can obtain
(a) a 12 and (b) a 7?

A. To obtain 12 in tossing two dice is to get the pair dice both 6. Means it
has only 1 way
B. To obatin 7 you need two toss dice that get 1 and 6, 2 and 5, and 3 and 4.
But you have 2 dice means two times a way means a total of 6 ways.
