Percentage:

The word percentage or per cent means for every one hundred. It is denoted by symbol %.
Thus 10 % means 10 out of hundred or 10/100.
Key Facts:
→ For converting a given percentage into a fraction, divide it by 100 or multiply by 1/100.
i.e. 25% can be converted in to fraction by dividing it by 100,
hence, 25%= 25/100= 0.25.
→ For converting a given fraction into percentage multiply it by 100. Thus, .25 =.25*100
=25%.
→ For converting one given quantity, say x as a percentage of another given quantity, say y
find (x/y)*100.
Concept of percentage change:
i) Absolute value change:
It is actual change in measured quantity. For instance, if sales in year 1 is Rs. 2500 crore and
sales in year 2 is Rs. 2600 crore, then the absolute value of the change is Rs. 100 crore.
ii) Percentage change:
It is got by,
Percentage change= (absolute change/original quantity)*100
= 100/2500 *100 =4%;
Calculation of percentage value through Addition:
It is best understandable by an example.
Example:
What is the percentage value of the ratio: 53/81.
Solution:
This process is based on 100%, 50%, 10%, 1%, 0.1 % and so forth values of the
denominator from the numerator.
53/81 can be rewritten as,
= (40.5+12.5)/81
= 40.5/81+12.5/81
= 50% + 12.5/81
=50% +(8.1+4.4)/81
= 50% + 10% + 4.4/81
= 60% + 4.4/81.
At this stage we can understand that the answer to the question lies between 60-70%
(since 4.4 is less than 10% of 81). The answer would be in this form, 6a.abcd....
In order to find the percentage value of 4.4/81, we can find it,
% value of 4.4/81= 4.4*100/81 =440/81. (Here we get 5 % with remainder 35)
Now, answer= 65.bcdde....
b =350/81 = 4 remainder 26.
c =260/100 =3 remainder 17 and so on.
Calculations of Multiplication by Numbers like 1.41, 0.83 and so on through addition:
Example: calculate 1.23*473.
Solution:
one should view this multiplication as an addition of 23% to the original number. This means;
473*1.23 =473+23% of 473 = 473+94.6 + 3% of 473;

= 567.6+14.19 =581.

Net percentage changes:

There are many situations where we have to deal with percentage changes, these changes
are called net percentage changes. We can deal it with a graphic. For example, you have to
increase a number 30 by 30 percentage then it can be visualized as;
30---10 %↑(3)--->33.
It is very useful in situation like:
i) Successive changes:-
Example 1: A trader gives successive discounts of 10%, 20% and 10% respectively. The
percentage of the original cost he will recover is:
Solution:
100---10%↓(-10)--->90---20%↓(-18)--->72---10%↓(-7.2)--->64.8
Example 2: A's salary increases by 20% and then decreases by 20%. What is the net
percentage change in A's salary?
100----20%↑--->120---20%↓--->96.
Hence, A's salary has gone down by 4%.
ii) A →B →A changes:
B's salary is 25% more than A's salary. By what percent is A's salary less than B's salary?
Solution:
100(A)----25%↑--->125(B)---(-25)--->100(A)
A drop of 25 on 125 gives a 20% drop.
Hence A's salary is 20% less than B salary.
iii) Product changes:
Let we have a product (10*10).
If the first variable changes to 12 and second variables changes to 11, what will be
percentage change in the product?
It has to notice that first variable 10 changes to 12 that mean 20 % increases and second
variable change 10 t0 11 means 10 % increases. Now situation can visualize as,
100---20%↑--->120----10%↑--->132
Hence, final product shows a 32 % increase.
Similarly, (10*10*10) becomes (11*12*13) then net product's percentage change:
100---30%↑--->130-----20%↑---156---10%↑--->171.6
Hence, the final product sees a 71.6 percent increase.
(Since, the product changes from 100 to 171.6)
iv) Final product constant changes:
The price of a commodity has gone up by 25%. In case you required keeping the total
expenditure on commodity constant, what percentage you need to cut down the
consumption?
100---25 %↑( price effect)--->125---(-25, consumption effect)--->100

Hence, consumption need to drop by, (25/125)*100= 20%.

Formula for percentage

The formula for percentage is the following and it should be easy to use:

Study it below carefully before looking at the examples

We will take examples to illustrate.Let us start with the formula on the left

An important thing to remember: Cross multiply

It means to multiply the numerator of one fraction by the denominator of the other fraction

Examples #1:

25 % of 200 is____

In this problem, of = 200, is = ?, and % = 25

We get:

is/200 = 25/100

Since is in an unknown, you can replace it by y to make the problem more familiar
y/200 = 25/100

Cross multiply to get y × 100 = 200 × 25

y × 100 = 5000

Divide 5000 by 100 to get y

Since 5000/100 = 50, y = 50

So, 25 % of 200 is 50

Examples #2:

What number is 2% of 50 ?

This is just another way of saying 2% of 50 is___

So, set up the proportion as example #1:

is/50 = 2/100

Replace is by y and cross multiply to get:

y × 100 = 50 × 2

y × 100 = 100

Since 1 × 100 = 100, y = 1

Therefore, 1 is 2 % of 50

Examples #3:

24% of___ is 36

This time, notice that is = 36, but of is missing

After you set up the formula, you get:

36/of = 24/100

Replace of by y and cross multiply to get:

36/y = 24/100

y × 24 = 36 × 100

y × 24 = 3600

Divide 3600 by 24 to get y

3600/24 = 150, y = 150

Therefore, 24 % of 150 is 36

Now, we will take examples to illustrate how to use the formula for percentage on the right

Examples #4:
To use the other formula that says part and whole, just remember the following:

The number after of is always the whole

The number after is is always the part

If I say 25 % of___ is 60, we know that the whole is missing and part = 60

Your proportion will will like this:

60/whole = 25/100

After cross multiplying, we get:

whole × 25 = 60 × 100

whole × 25 = 6000

Divide 6000 by 25 to get whole

6000/25 = 240, so whole = 240

Therefore, 25 % of 240 is 60

Examples #5:

___% of 45 is 9

Here whole = 45 and part = 9, but % is missing

We get:

9/45 = %/100

Replacing % by x and cross multiplying gives:

9 × 100 = 45 × x

900 = 45 × x

Divide 900 by 45 to get x

900/45 = 20, so x = 20

Here we go!. I hope these formula for percentage were helpful.
