PART – A (10 X 1 =10marks)


1. List out requirements of alternator.
2. Write the formula for chording angle and slot angle. What is phase spread?
3. What is reactive power, active power, apparent power alternator?
4. Define synchronous impedance, synchronous reactance, and voltage regulation of alternator.
5. What is synchronous condenser? List out applications and features of synchronous motor.
6. List out applications of stepper motor and servo motor.
7. What is linear induction motor? What are its applications?
8. Why induction motor rotates less than synchronous speed?
9. How to choose type of starter for given induction motor?
10. What is unbalanced voltage? What is the effect of induction motor for it?

PART – B (5 X 3 = 15marks)
1. What is fractional and integral slot winding?
2. What are the advantages of parallel operation of alternator?
3. What is damper winding? What are the uses of damper winding in synchronous machine?
4. Draw the vector diagram of induction motor.
5. What is varnishing? Explain it.

PART – C (5 x 10 = 50marks)
1. List out methods of cooling of alternator and explain each with neat drawing.

2. Calculate the speed and open circuit phase voltage of a 4 pole 50Hz star connected alternator with
36 slots 30 conductors per slot and full pitch. The flux per pole in 0.05 Weber sinusoidally
distributed.

1. Explain step by step procedure of predetermination of voltage regulation of alternator using potier
triangle method with experimental set up diagram.

2. Determine the voltage regulation of a 2000 Volts single phase alternator delivering a current of
100A at 0.8 p.f. lagging from the following test results. Full load current of 100Aon short circuit by a
field excitation of 2.5A, an emf of 500V is produced on open circuit by same excitation. Armature
resistance is 0.8 ohm.

1. Draw the vector diagram of synchronous motor at under, normal, over excitation and derive the
back emf formula, resultant emf formula for each case.

2. Explain construction and operation of permanent magnet D.C. motor with neat diagram.

1. List out types of speed control of induction motor and explain frequency control method, injecting
D.C. voltage method with circuit diagram.

with neat circuit diagram.

1. List out steps to be followed for performing periodical and preventive maintenance.
