Questions 1-8 are based on the following passage.
Cordyceps sinensis is one of the most valued of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs. It is also known as
Dong Chong Xiao Cao or “winter worm, summer plant”. The reason for this is because long ago, its
medicinal property was thought to come from a worm that lived inside this plant. In recent years, scientists
have discovered that cordyceps is actually a type of fungus.
For over a thousand years, Chinese medicinal practitioners have used cordyceps as an effective tonic for
several health complaints. It is said to help strengthen the body, improve organ functions, build up body
resistance and promote a long and healthy life. It was also prescribed for the treatment of asthma, weak
lungs, shortness of breath and other related health problems.
Research has shown that this fungus can lower the LDL “bad” cholesterol level while increasing the HDL
“good” cholesterol level. It also helps to “thin” the blood to prevent plaque or clot formation that may block
blood vessels. In this way, it helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack and
stroke.
The benefits of cordyceps were first discovered 1500 years ago in the mountains of Tibet. Cowherds in these
mountains noticed that their cattle became more energetic after eating this tiny grass-like herb. However, it
only received international fame after a group of Chinese athletes broke world records in the 1993 World

Elephants are large land mammals. Three species of elephant are generally recognized today: the African
bush elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant (also known as the Indian elephant).
Elephants are the largest living land animals on Earth today. The elephants gestation period is 22 months,
the longest of any land animal. They typically live for 50 to 70 years, but the oldest recorded elephant lived
for 82 years. The smallest elephants are about the size of a calf or a large pig.
Elephants are a symbol of wisdom in Asian cultures and are famed for their memory and intelligence. Their
intelligence level is thought to be equal to that of dolphins and primates. The word “elephant” has its origins
in the Greek meaning "ivory” or "elephant”. The dwindling numbers of major populations is largely as a
result of poaching and habitat destruction by human.
An elephant can use its trunk for a variety of purposes, including wiping its eye. The elephant raises its trunk
as a sign of warning or to smell enemies or friends. Their trunks help them to tear up their food and then
place it in their mouths. Elephants use the trunk for drinking. They suck water up into the trunk and then
blow it into their mouths to spray on their bodies during bathing. Familiar elephants will greet each other by
entwining their trunks, much like a handshake. An elephant also relies on its trunk for its highly developed
sense of smell. It can determine the location of friends, enemies, and food sources.
They will graze on grass or reach up into trees to grasp leaves, fruit, or entire branches. If the desired food
item is too high up, the elephant will wrap its trunk around the tree or branch and shake its food loose or
sometimes simply knock the tree down altogether.
