Maximising The Last Days of Ramadan

Blessed congregation,
Ramadan will leave us soon. There are only five days left
before we celebrate Hari Raya. We don’t know whether we will
live to see the next Ramadan or not. Maybe this is our last
Ramadan on Earth.

1
Let us reflect back on what we have done in this blessed
month. Did we fill it with good deeds? With acts or worship?
Have we grabbed the opportunities presented to us in this
month? Have filled our time with fasting, praying and recitation
of Al-Quran?

Fortunate are those who make full use of their time in this
month. For them are forgiveness from Allah, and the Paradise.
Let us pray to Allah that He accepts all our good deeds in this
month, amen.

This is a month of countless gifts from Allah. A month when the

doors of Heavens are opened, and the doors of Hells are
closed. A month when Allah erases the names of many
potential Hell dwellers. And what better gift than to be saved
from Hell fire? So don’t waste this good opportunity. Seek
Allah’s forgiveness and mercy. Double your efforts in ibadah,
especially in these last days of Ramadan. And hope that they
will cover the lost chances that you have wasted in this blessed
month.

Muslimin rahimakumullah,
The last ten nights of Ramadan are special nights. There is a
high probability that the night of Lailat Al-Qadr will occur in
those nights. Rasulullah said in a hadith narrated by Bukhari:

2
Which means: Seek Lailat Al-Qadr in the last ten nights of
Ramadan.

What is so specal about Lailat Al-Qadr? Allah says in surah Al-

Qadr:

Which means: And what will make you know what the night of
Al-Qadr is? The night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand
months.

1000 months! Imagine performing an ibadat continuously for

1000 months! Or equivalent to more than 83 years! This is the
special gift awaiting those who keep vigil every night of the last
ten days of Ramadan.

We don’t know when Lailat Al-Qadr will be. It remains a secret

so that we diligently devote ourselves to worshiping Allah in
every night of Ramadan, especially the last ten nights.

3
It was reported that when Ramadan entered its last ten days,
Rasulullah s.a.w would increased his acts of worship, woke his
family members every night to perform solat, and continuously
did his ‘itikaf.

If Rasulullah s.a.w, a person who is guaranteed the highest

place in Heaven, and who is free of any sin, put aside any
fatigue to devote himself to Allah in the last ten nights of
Ramadan, what about us? What about us? We are sinful. We
are not assured of our place in Heaven.

Shouldn’t we also do the same as our Prophet s.a.w? Or even

more? Shouldn’t we also increase our ibadah in these last ten
nights of Ramadan?

Imagine my brothers, in just 10 days out of 365 days in a year,

we really devote ourselves for ibadah. And the reward that
awaits us will be 83 years of constant ibadah!

Let us put aside any distractions in these last days and nights of
Ramadan. Yes, the distractions will be very strong. Especially
when Hari Raya is getting nearer.

4
Some will even sacrifice their Terawih prayers just to go
shopping. Some even keep vigils at night, not to perform
prayers, but to make preparations for Hari Raya.

Isn’t it wonderful if we keep vigil in these last nights of Ramadan

to perform our ibadahs, Tahajjud prayers and reciting Al-
Quran? Allah says in surah Ali Imran, verse 133:

Which means: And march forth in the way (which leads to)
forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as wide as are the
heavens and the earth, prepared for Al-Muttaqûn.

And know this my brothers, that Allah s.w.t has ordained fasting
upon us, to make us more pious, to be Al-Muttaqun. This is
mentioned in the Quranic verse that contains the command to
fast:

(Al-Baqarah, verse 183)

5
Which means: O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the
fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those
before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqûn

Let us ensure that our fasting in this blessed month will make
us more pious, will make us among the Al-Muttaqun.

My brothers in Islam,
The month of Ramadan is not just a month of fasting. It is also a
month of zakat fitrah. For zakat fitrah exists only in this month. It
is compulsory upon all Muslims, young and old, men and
women, poor and rich.

There are two main objectives of zakat fitrah. First, it is to clean

ourselves from indecent words and actions in this month.
Second, to give food to the poor and needy.

In a hadith narrated by Abu Daud, Ibn Abbas, may Allah be

please with him, said:

6
Which means: The Prophet s.a.w ordained zakat fitrah as a
cleanser for those who fast from indecent and lewd words, and
as food to the poor. Whomsoever performs it before the Eid
prayer, then it is zakat fitrah. And whomsoever performs it after
the Eid prayer, it will then be just a donation.

So let us hasten the payment of our zakat fitrah, and not

delaying it the last minute. Hopefully, that zakat fitrah will clean
us from indecent words and acts during the month of Ramadan.

Zakat fitrah is also a means to share the happiness of Hari

Raya with the poor, so that they will not come begging for food.
One is not considered as true Muslim if one does not care
about the poor and needy.

Now that we have two rates for zakat fitrah, according to the
type of rice we eat, let us not feel burdened to pay the higher
rate, if we lead a comfortable life. What is just few dollars, if we
compare to the benefits that will come back to us and to the
community?

And in this month, we are not only obliged to pay zakat fitrah,
but we are also encouraged to be charitable, to give donations
as much as we can.

7
With zakat fitrah and those donations, we will build a more
caring and compassionate society, who is concern with the
plight of the poor and needy. And ultimately, we will be a
society that will contribute to the prosperity of our country and
the world.
