Fire Protection in Buildings

Fire protection in buildings is important to reduce risks of death, injury, and property damage from fires. Buildings must be designed with safety precautions like fire-resistant materials, sprinkler systems, alarms, and adequate exits. Regular inspection and maintenance of fire equipment is also essential. A suitable number and type of fire extinguishers, alarms, and suppression systems should be installed depending on a building's hazard level and occupancy. A fire protection plan is a crucial part of any building's safety plan to protect occupants in an emergency.

FIRE PROTECTION IN BUILDINGS: Prevention through Enhancing Safety Precautions

Buildings need to be designed to offer an acceptable level of fire safety and minimize the
risks from heat and smoke. The primary objective is to reduce to within acceptable limits the
potential for death or injury to the occupants of a building and others who may become involved,
such as the fire and rescue service. Also crucial are protecting contents and ensuring that as
much as possible of a building can continue to function after a fire - and that it can be repaired.
The risk to adjoining properties also needs to be considered, as well as possible environmental
pollution.
For more than a century, insurance companies have played a critical role in the
development of fire code which turns into fire regulations. As such, fire code is largely what
insurance agents call “loss control”: identifying and managing sources of risk. As the way we live
and build gradually changes, so too does our understanding of risk. Additional catastrophic fires
in the past decades saw the development of fire codes for jails and prisons, including the use of
limited or non-combustible building materials and automatic sprinkler systems. Around the same
time, shipboard fire code including standards for fire drills, ship-wide fire alarms, and automatic
fire doors were also refined.
Nowadays, both residential and commercial fire and safety prevention should be an
active endeavor. There are many types of fire safety equipment that should ideally be installed in
a building, for not only prevention and protection, but suppression as well. There are a number of
things that can cause a fire, even with the best technology available. It’s always good to have
equipment to protect both the building and the people inside. There are different types of alarms
for buildings, including heat detectors and smoke alarms. Heat detectors are the oldest type of
automatic fire detecting equipment. It’s also recommended to use a combination alarm in order
to detect both fast growing and slow smoldering fires. There are multiple classes of fire
extinguishers and pump systems. The number and type you need depends on factors such as the
hazard level of your building and the codes in your area.
Sprinkler systems range from simple to complex. The most frequently installed sprinkler
is the wet pipe system. When activated, it releases the water from the pipes onto the fire.
However, in cold temperatures, there is the risk of freezing. Having the right fire and
safety  prevention systems professionally installed is only the first step. They should also be
maintained regularly. The equipment and system should be inspected annually.
Efficient fire protection equipment ensures that fires can be combatted in a rapid and
efficient manner. As soon as work starts on the building site suitable alarm mechanisms such as
telephones, fire alarms, sirens, paging systems etc. should be installed. Fire drills should be
practiced involving the local fire brigade as well as the building site employees. There should
also be an adequate number of suitable fire extinguishers should be distributed throughout the
building site. Their locations should be clearly marked in accordance with safety regulations and
employees should be instructed in the correct use of this equipment, presence of supply of water
specifically for fire-fighting purposes and appropriate for the fire load in question should be
ensured. These measures must be adapted according to the developing situation resulting from
progress in construction so that the supply of water for fire-fighting always corresponds to the
fire load of the entire building site and the fire protection and fire-fighting systems planned for
the building under construction are installed and put into operation as early as possible.
A fire safe building will always have the correct number of fully functional fire exits and
fire doors, to ensure a quick and easy escape, whilst preventing the spread of the fire. In the
unfortunate event of a fire, it’s always ideal to minimize the damage of the building afterwards.
This can be done by suitably segregating escape routes, common areas and escape routes. It’s
easy to believe that only solid wooden doors and walls can do this job properly, but fire rated
glass provides exactly the same protection.
A fire protection plan is an important component of a building’s safety plan, regardless of
whether it’s a commercial facility, hospital or educational facility. Without a fire protection
system, the lives of those who are inside the building are placed at a high risk in the event an
emergency.
