the ground state at a temperature of 300 C. Assume that  = 590 nm.
2. The relative population of atoms in two energy levels E1 and E2 at temperature 300 K is 10 -20.
Calculate the energy level difference in eV.
3. Determine the ratio of stimulated emission to a spontaneous emission at a temperature of
250C for a material with an emitted radiation of wavelength 600 nm.
4. Calculate the ratio of transition rates of spontaneous emission to stimulated emission for light
of wavelength 10-4 m and cavity temperature 100K and hence determine which type of emission
will dominate.
5. Calculate the ratio of rates of spontaneous emission to stimulated emission for light of
wavelength 10-6 m and cavity temperature 100K and hence determine which type of emission
will dominate.
6. The power output of a He-Ne laser of wavelength 632.8 nm is 4 mW. Calculate the number of
photons emitted per minute during the laser operation.
7. The spectral spread of a laser light 6943Å is 0.0001 Å. Calculate the coherence length and
coherence time?
8. The output power of a given laser is 1mW and the emitted wavelength is 630 nm. Calculate
the number of photons emitted per second. If the area of laser beam is 10 -6 m2, then find the
intensity of laser beam.
9. In a Ruby laser, the total number of Cr +3 ions is 2.81019. If the laser emits radiation of
wavelength 7000Å, then calculate the energy of one emitted photon and total energy available
per pulse.
10. An ultraviolet laser generates a 10 MW, 10.0 ns long pulse at awavelength of 355 nm. How
many photons are there in each pulse?
11. Find the ratio of population of two states in He-Ne laser that produces light of wavelength
6328Å at 27C.
12. At what temperature the rates of spontaneous and stimulated emissions are equal. (Given  =
5000Å).

Determine the coefficient of the stimulated emission.
14. Imagine that we chop a continuous laser beam assumed to be perfectly monochromatic  =
632.8 nm into a 0.1 ns pulses using some sort of shutter. Compute the resultant line width and
coherence length.
15. A laser beam can be focused on an area equal to the square of its wavelength (). For a He-
