MODULE 2 Analytic Geometry

This document provides an introduction, objectives, and post-test for a lesson on graphing equations. The introduction explains that graphs visualize relationships between two variables by showing the set of points satisfying an equation. The objectives are to graph equations by plotting points, finding intercepts from graphs and equations, and testing for symmetry. The post-test assesses understanding of key concepts like intercepts, symmetry, and solving equations.

MODULE 2

INTRODUCTION:
The graph of an equation in two variables x and y consists of the set of points in the
xy-plane whose coordinates satisfy the equation. Graphs play a key role in helping us to
visualize the relationships that exist between two variables or quantities. The relation
between the level of risk in a stock portfolio and the average annual rate of return.

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. Graph Equations by Plotting Points
2. Find Intercepts from a Graph
3. Find Intercepts from an Equation
4. Test an Equation for Symmetry with Respect to the x-Axis, the y-Axis, and the Origin
5. Know How to Graph Key Equations

TOPIC DISCUSSION:
LESSON 1
POST-TEST:

1.2 Assess Your Understanding

1. Solve the equation 21x + 32 - 1 = -7

2. Solve the equation

3. The points, if any, at which a graph crosses or touches the coordinate axes are
called__________________
4. The x-intercepts of the graph of an equation are those x-values for
which_______________
5. If for every point on the graph of an equation the
point is also on the graph, then the graph is
symmetric with respect to the___________________
6. If the graph of an equation is symmetric with respect to the
y-axis and is an x-intercept of this graph, then____________ is
also an x-intercept.
7. If the graph of an equation is symmetric with respect to the
origin and is a point on the graph, then_____________________
is also a point on the graph.
8. True or False - To find the y-intercepts of the graph of an
equation, let and solve for y.
9. True or False -The y-coordinate of a point at which the
graph crosses or touches the x-axis is an x-intercept.
10. True or False- If a graph is symmetric with respect to the
x-axis, then it cannot be symmetric with respect to the
y-axis.
